The weather is an important part in farming and changes in temperature will strongly affect crop growth. For the UK, temperature rises are likely to mean the crops normally growing in the south of the country will be able to be grown further north. The UN believes there will be a shift northwards of between 200 and 300 kilometers for every degree of warming. This would be similar to the south of England in 2060, having the kind of weather the LoireValley, in France, experiences now.Due to an increase in drought and heat waves, the types of crops grown in the UK will have to change, which doesnt have to be a bad thing for us. Products which havent been farmed over here before, such as sweet corn, sunflowers, and maize for cereals, could all provide new business for farmerscertainly in the southeast. However, if farming practices do change in this country, procedures will have to be put in place beforehand as introducing something new of farmland involves a lot of preparation. Also, irrigation systems may need to be improved so that rain from winter can be stored for the summer as it is hotter. Researchers are finding that pests, such as aphids, are starting to hatch (孵化) earlier in the year. In the last 1015 years theyve been arriving in springtime and the population of aphids appears to be growing, too. Aphids are a real problem as they can cause so much damage to crops and if theyre arriving earlier in the year they can get the produce when its very fragilecausing more damage than they used to.21It is quite possible that the author comes from _.Athe UK Bthe UNCFrance DScotland答案:A细节理解题。从第一段第一句“The crops we produce in the UK .” 22The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refers to_.Athe kind of weather the LoireValley, in France experiences nowBthe kind of weather the south of England in 2060 will haveCthe UNs belief that there will be a shift northwards of between 200 and 300 kilometers for every degree of warmingDthe UKs temperature rises mean the crops growing in the south will be able to be grown further north答案:D指代判断题。this指代上文所讲的“. temperature rises are likely to mean the crops normally growing in the south of the country will be able to be grown further north”,故选D。23The main idea of this passage is that _.Athe crops raised in the south will be transplanted to the north in 2060Bthe temperature rises will bring about either good or bad effectsCthe climate has a strong influence on cropsDthe global warmth causes more positive effects than negative答案:C主旨大意题。 C。BIs it worth buying organic food? Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods withorganic labels (商标). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at StanfordUniversity says that organic products arent necessarily more nutritious, and theyre no less likely to suffer from diseasecausing bacteria, either. The latest results, published in the AnnualsofInternalMedicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr Crystal SmithSpangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldnt assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.”For their new study, SmithSpangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analysed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends. Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more naturalgrowing practices, but that doesnt always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste. Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.24The new research questions whether organic food _. Ashould replace traditional food Bhas been overpriced by farmers Cis grown with less harmful chemicals Dis really more nutritious and healthier答案:D细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier, says Dr Crystal SmithSpangler from Stanford.” D。25SmithSpangler and her colleagues found that _. Aorganic food could reduce the risk of heart disease Btraditional food was grown with more natural methods Cboth organic and traditional food they examined were safe Dthere was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food答案:C细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards.” C。26Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage? AOrganic chicken and pork. BOrganic milk and chicken. CTraditional chicken and pork. DTraditional fruit and vegetables. 根据第四段第四句“The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease.” B。27What is the authors attitude towards organic food? ASkeptical. BNeutral. CUnconcerned. DApproving. skeptical “怀疑的”;neutral “中立的”;unconcerned “不关心的”;approving “赞同的”。CFishermen from the Brazilian town of Laguna have developed a unique symbiotic (共生的) relationship with dolphins: they rely on the intelligent creatures to help them catch fish. Studies have shown that theres a particular group of about 20 bottlenose dolphins that work alongside the fishermen, while the rest of the local dolphins prefer to look for food on their own. The dolphins work together to drive groups of fish towards the fishermen. They then use heador finsignals to warn the fishermen about when and where the nets should be thrown. The system works well for both parties: neither could survive without the other. The fishermen get to catch all the fish they need, while most of the escaped fish swim right into the dolphins mouths. The water is so dark near Laguna that the fishermen could never catch fish as efficiently without the dolphins help. Thats why they only fish when the dolphins show up. “About 200 local fishermen are almost entirely dependent on the dolphins for catching fish,”study researcher Fbio DauraJorge said. “The fishermen do not fish without the assistance of the dolphins and know the individual animals from their natural marks and can recognize them by eye.” Interestingly, the researchers discovered three different social networks of dolphins in Laguna, only one of which cooperate (合作) with the fishermen. The cooperation might be a learned behavior characteristic, because nothing in the environment actually stops other dolphins from helping the fishermen as well. Researchers believe that the behavior is passed down from mother dolphins to their babies, through social learning. Similarly, elder fishermen teach their children how to work with the dolphins. This unique form of cooperative fishing has been going on for at least 120 years, as proven by a 19thcentury letter that mentions the special dolphins of Laguna, but no one knows exactly how it started.28What benefit do the dolphins get from the cooperative fishing?AThey get most of the fish.BThey get escaped fish only.CThey are protected by the fishermen.DThey get fish thrown by the fishermen. 由第二段第四句中的“. while most of the escaped fish swim right into the dolphins mouths”可知,海豚把鱼群赶入渔民的网中,逃脱的鱼就进了海豚的嘴里。29Why do the fishermen have to fish with the dolphins help?AThey are too lazy to fish.BThe fish are in dark water.CThey have poor fishing skills.DThere are not enough fish for them. 由第二段中的倒数第二句“The water is so dark near Laguna that the fishermen could never catch fish as efficiently without the dolphins help.” 30How do the dolphins get the behavior of fishing with the fishermen?AThey are born with the ability.BThey are trained by the fishermen.CBabies learn it from their mothers.DThey learn it from other groups of dolphins. 由倒数第二段倒数第二句“Researchers believe that the behavior is passed down from mother dolphins to their babies, through social learning.” 31The text is written mainly to tell us _.Athe intelligence of bottlenose dolphinsBfishing in the Brazilian town of LagunaC
