Unit 10 Love and Resentment,Do you know any lunatics in your life? What is your impression of them? Should they be cared for or disregarded? How do you think lunatic patients should be cared for in our society? ,lunatic: mentally ill, insane, About the Lesson,The author, Barbara Bick is a peace activist, feminist, and writer as well as an advocate for the mentally ill in Washington, D.C. In this article, she describes her daughters illness and behavior as well as the mixed feelings she has for her. Her painful experiences are presented through some typical events and examples, flashbacks, muffled mutterings, infuriated utterances, and dialogues. The writers inner thoughts are also revealed, sometimes through utterances she seems to be making to herself. Moreover, in order to make her narration more vivid and impressive, the writer employs various rhetorical(修辞) devices, particularly metaphor(隐喻), in proper places.,Structural Analysis of the Text,This narrative text consists of dynamic and vivid accounts of the chief characters mental illness and her behavior, and of the writers love and resentment of her daughter. The whole article may be divided into the following parts: 1. Part I (paras. 1-8) : describes and recounts tow typical events concerning the daughters unusual behavior and the writers response to it.,2. Part II (Paras 9-23) : shows the writers love and resentment for her daughter and describes how her daughters illness originated, how she has been suffering from it, and how she frequently experiences mood swings. 3. Part III (Para. 24): makes it clear that the writer must live her own life instead of satisfying her daughters greatest wish, that she loves and hates her daughter, to whom she is responsible and irresponsible, and that she will do everything possible to cope with the worst she has to live with.,Part I,Note the changes in the daughters behavior and the writers attitude towards her daughter daughters behavior: wild outburst - calm and impassive -rose in crescendo writers attitude: cautiously-shaken-reassured-snapped-quieter,I straightened up from my weeding as the frenzied mutterings of anger reached me from the house. I went away quickly, stricken once again by her uncontrollable explosion. Sometimes she terrifies me when she lost control. But this time I was not scared.,. she asked as she lighted her umpteenth cigarette of the morning and was shaken by her usual barking cough. : She had been smoking many cigarettes on that morning. She asked the question as she lighted yet another cigarette. And meanwhile, she coughed so violently, as she usually did, that she was trembling all over.,she settled deeper into the deck chair. . she sat deeper into the folding chair. Yesterday had been rough. She had hurled accusation after accusation at me. Yesterday was a tough day for me. She accused me repeatedly of one thing after another.,Part II,Why does the author have a tiny treasure of house on a island? Furthermore, she changes her temper and moods easily and quickly. She has never been able to enjoy a day of good life.,The evil illness has made the daughter abnormal, but sometimes she still displays the nature of a normal healthy daughter, in a very undeveloped form like that of a baby. (Para 19, 20) At times the author gets impatient. But when her daughter acts normally and speaks gently, the writer feels sad and ashamed for her rude treatment of her daughter.
