Plan ahead as much as possible.,Tips of Listening to Questions,Always allow time at the end of the presentation for questions. Questions do not mean you did not explain the topic good enough, but that their interest is deeper than the average audience.,Make sure you listen to the question being asked. If you do not understand it, ask them to clarify.,Tips of Answering the question,Whats the best kind of answer? Short. Simple. Concise. Repeat question Answers that last 10 to 40 seconds work best. When answering, direct your remarks to the entire audience.,If someone takes issue with something you said, try to find a way to agree with part of their argument. “Yes, I understand your position.“ “Im glad you raised that point, but.“,Dont praise questions Avoid saying “That was a great question,” or “Good question.”,Keep cool if a questioner disagrees with you.,Give conclusion after the question and answer. “Before I make some concluding remarks, who has a question to ask?”,Challenges,Loaded question Dont answer a loaded question; defuse it before you answer. Comment instead of question Interrupt with “Thanks for your comment.Next question?”,Hostile question Head them off. Get right to the issues. There are no questions? Turn the tables.,Useful Expressions,I. Inviting Questions,So, lets throw it open to questions. Now I d like to answer any questions, if you have any. Now I am ready to answer your questions, if any. Id be glad to try and answer any questions. Are there any questions?,II. Response to Questions,Asking for Repetition Pardon, I couldnt hear what you said. I beg your pardon, I didnt catch what you said. Im sorry I forgot your first question. Would you be so kind as to say it again?,Im not quite sure what your question is. I didnt quite get the last point of your question. You mean, there may be some mistake in the calculation? Are you referring to the significance of the difference?,Are you suggesting that the temperature might have affected the results? If I understand you correctly, you are saying/asking. I didnt quite catch that. Could you go over that again? Im not sure what youre getting at.,Repeating or Paraphrasing the Question,Questioner: Have you tried it on human bodies? Presenter: This gentleman would like to know whether we have tried this on human bodies.,Responding to the Questions You Do not Know,Admit that you dont know. Say something like this: “Im sorry. I dont happen to know the answer to that question, but Ill be happy to check into it for you.“ Here are some further examples: I wish I could answer your question, but unfortunately I have no good answer.,Im not sure that I can answer your question. What Im going to say is not quite an answer to your question. I think that question could be better answered by Dr. Liu than by me. I think perhaps Dr. Chen would be better able to answer this question.,Prof. Li would be a better person to answer your question since he has done a lot of work in this field. F
