His voyages were 80 years earlier than Columbuss discovery of New Continent and 100 years before Magellans circumnavigation.,Captain James Cook,The ENDENAVOUR departed England in 1768 and after visiting Tahiti the following year James Cook (1728 - 1779) discovered New Zealand and claimed it for Great Britain. Sailing west, in 1770 he sighted the east coast of Australia. From here he sailed north and on August 22 he claimed the whole of eastern Australia as a British possession. The ENDEAVOUR returned to England in 1771 having added significantly to Britains potential empire in the Pacific.,Christopher Columbus,He (1451- 1506) was Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India (in order to trade for spices).
