My mom was found to have cancer when she was 40, and for the next seven years, Macmillan was part of our lives. Unfortunately, my mom died when I was 18, at the age of 47. Since Macmillan was so helpful at that time, I decided that I was going to spend as much of my free time in volunteering as I could, so I signed up to become a speaker for the team in the Greater Manchester area. I have done many kinds of work at Macmillan from helping the local team with fundraising (筹款) to giving lectures at colleges, schools and organizations. Because of my fundraising and volunteering, I was honored to be a Torch Bearer for London 2012. When I was speaking to people about fundraising, I always said, “This is what I do and this is what Macmillan does support those who have cancer.” What encourages me is that, at talks or collections I do, somebody comes up to me and says, “Thank you for saving my life.”There are lots of volunteers at Macmillan. Its the volunteers who take the time out of their own lives to support and be there for people influenced by cancer. They are very important. Volunteers create better environments for others. They create healthier communities, and they brighten lives. Volunteering is a good way to help people. Cancer influences so many people now, so everyone should use a skill that they have to support Macmillan. If you want to do something that youre not trained in, Macmillan is there to train you and support your development. Macmillan provides an important service that people can depend on at the most difficult time in their life. Through volunteering, you can make a difference to those people who need support.【语篇解读】作者是一位Macmillan的志愿者,他从事志愿者工作已经五年了,他很热爱志愿者工作。24Why did the author volunteer at Macmillan?ABecause it was his mother s last wish.BBecause he had too much free time to kill.CBecause he wanted to be honored by others.DBecause he wanted to pay back Macmillan s help. Since Macmillan was so helpful at that time, I decided that I was going to spend as much of my free time in volunteering as I could . Macmillan。25What made the author become a Torch Bearer for London 2012?AHis achievements in sports.BHis achievements as a volunteer.CHis efforts to help poor people.DHis efforts to advertise London 2012. Because of my fundraising and volunteering, I was honored to be a Torch Bearer for London 2012. 26What kind of organization is Macmillan?AIt offers help to people with cancer.BIt raises money to help poor people.CIt provides people with medical care for free.DIt encourages volunteers to work in many hospitals. When I was speaking to people about fundraising, I always said,“This is what I do and this is what Macmillan does support those who have cancer.” 27Whats the passage mainly about?ASeveral facts about Macmillan.BThe importance of Macmillans service.CThe authors achievements as a volunteer.DThe authors experiences as a volunteer at Macmillan. CSelfconfidence is a strength many of us struggle for. Developing selfconfidence is very important. Ones lack (缺乏) of confidence has been commonly connected with poor performance and lack of success. But developing selfconfidence takes time and effort. Most commonly, people will fall into the black hole trap where they allow their doubts to take control. People often jump to negative thoughts and feelings for facts. Negative thoughts and feelings can make them doubt themselves. Instead of thinking negatively, think positively. There is power in positive selftalk, which can change your negative thoughts into positive ones.Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argued in a 2012 TED talk that power posing, which is standing in posture (姿势) of confidence, even when one does not feel confident, can increase the feelings of selfconfidence and can have a positive influence on ones chances of success. When wearing professional clothing, people are likely to act better and treat themselves with more respect. They “feel like a million dollars”, so to speak, and they act that way in public. Im not saying a $300 worth of suit will make sure youll succeed in a job interview, but it can help improve your selfimage and confidence and help you succeed by improving how you feel about yourself. Our minds tend to work faster than our voices. This is why people tend to trip over their words while talking. Slowing down the speech can improve ones confidence in their own voice through knowing that their thoughts are expressed clearly. Speaking slowly can lower stress levels and provide the body with more time to breathe and relax. When stress is removed and the body is given time to get the oxygen that it requires, the mind becomes more awake and selfconfidence improves. If you lack selfconfidence, follow the tips given above. With practice, youll become more confident and increase your chance of succeeding in life. 28What does the author want to show in Paragraph 1?AGetting success takes a lot of time and effort.BPoor performance leads to lack of confidence.CDeveloping selfconfidence isnt easy but is important.DMany people don t realize the importance of selfconfidence. 29According to Paragraph 2, why do many people lack selfconfidence?ABecause they are short of selftalk skills.BBecause they often experience bad things.CBecause they think about things in a wrong way.DBecause they often talk to people with negative thoughts. People often jump to negative thoughts and feelings for facts. From their experiences, Ive learned that its very important for children to play team sports.Teenagers may get into bad habits. But teenagers who often take part in team sports have less time for misbehavior. According to a study in Archives of Pediatric and A dolescent Medicine, a survey of more than 14,000 teenagers found that those who had taken part in team sports were less likely to smoke or have unhealthy eating habits.Team sports make a childs social world wider. Research shows that children who take part in team sports are happier than those who do not. And among middle school teenagers who take part in team sports, both boys and girls say they are happier when they are playing on a sports team.As children get older, they naturally develop their own lives and there will be fewer ways for parents to be involved (介入). However, even teenagers who are determined to shut their parents out still want their parents to attend their games.Sports build strong and healthy bodies. Children who compete know that they are only at their best if they ate and rested well. Cigarettes and drugs harm their performance and every athlete knows that. In sports, strength and speed, rather than thinness or other bad body image, are wanted. Team sports help kids avoid obesity (肥胖) problems even better than activities like running or biking. Sports teams can bring you lifelong memories. The joy of a sporting season stays with us long after the season is over. Our children may forget who was in their English class or which math teacher they had in the 10th grade one day. But they will never forget their sports teams.【语篇解读】作者认为青少年参加团体运动对他们有很多益处。32What does the author want to show by mentioning the study in Paragraph 2?ASome teenagers misbehave for a reason.BMisbehavior in teenagers can be avoided.CTeenagers should make full use of their time.DPlay
