The British actress played the beautiful girl Belle in Disneys new live-action movie Beauty and Beast. She also sang for the role, the first time she has done so in her career. The movie came out in China on March 17. Originally an animation film, it tells how a cursed man-beast is changed into a handsome prince by the love of Belle. To play the lead role in Beauty and the Beast, Watson turned down the offer of La La Land, which won six awards including the Best Actress at this years Oscars. However, she does not regret it. She told Vanity Fair that she believes the movie says something that is important for people to hear. This is not her first time being invited to play a Disney princess. She refused the offer to play Cinderella. But she happily took on Belle because she saw her as a better role model. Belle doesnt mind Beasts ugly appearance and sees his good heart within. “She remains curious, compassionate and open-minded,” she told Total Film. “Shes not easily swayed by other peoples ideas.” But to build her own version of Belle, Watson had a hand in shaping the character. She wanted Belle to be busy instead of just playing in the castle all day. So she had the idea of turning Belle into an inventor, like her father. And Belle even made a washing machine herself, though people broke it. She wanted it to free girls from chores and allow them to learn how to read. From controlling the lighting in our homes to helping us order pizza, it seems there arent many more uses for AI than we already have. But thanks to a team of Swiss scientists, AI may soon be able to come up with music just for us. Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federable de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have created a computer algorithm (算法), the “deep artificial composer” (DAC), which can create original music all by itself. Florian Colombo, an EPFL scientist who helped create the DAC, told AFP(法新社) that the AI “can produce complete melodies, with a beginning and an end, that are completely novel and that share features that we can relate to.” For the time being, the DAC is only able to produce tracks based on traditional Irish folk music, but its hoped that it will eventually be able to create songs based on any type of music. To “teach” the DAC, the scientists trained it to “listen” to over 2,000 different folk songs. Based on this input, the AI taught itself how to compose music, from getting the pitch and timing 英语试卷 B 第 6 页 (共 9 页) right to choosing the right notes. This process is still in its early stages, with the DAC still not producing perfect results, but Colombo told AFP that the AIs music is still “quite agreeable to listen to.” But while the idea sounds very promising, we shouldnt expect the DAC to replace real-life composers any time soon. According to Colombo, the system was designed to produce only simple melodies. So far, it can only create songs based on a single instrument, not an entire orchestra. Colombo said that his aim in creating the DAC was to help people create their own music, not to have it made for them. His inspiration came from Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart, who it said used to throw dice to help him pick which notes to use when making new music. “A good composer with innovative ideas will never be replaced by an algorithm,” Colombo told AFP. 6. According to the article, AI can do all the following except _ . A. controlling the lighting B. helping us order pizza C. coming up with music D. giving birth to a child 7. What does the underlined word “novel” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. new and different B. adapted from a novel C. based on input D. agreeable to listen to 8. According to the article, the DAC can create music _ . A. that is complete and pleasant B. that is based on any type of music C. that can replace real-life composers D. that uses different instruments 9. How did the DAC learn to produce music? A. It was given rules on how to make music. B. It learned from studying lots of folk songs. C. It was taught by many famous composers. D. It learned from a database of different music types. 10. What was Colombos main purpose of inventing the DAC? A. To study AIs performance in creative activities. B. To replace real-life composers in the future. C. To compete with great musicians like Mozart. D. To make it easier for people to create music. Passage Three UK rock singer David Bowie was famous for his love of purple clothes. German composer Richard Wagner is said to have surrounded himself with purple things while he wrote music. And 英语试卷 B 第 7 页 (共 9 页) US author Alice Walker wrote in her 1982 novel The Color Purple: “I think it annoys God if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and dont notice it.” Yes, purple is a beautiful color. Its usually associated with creativity and mystery. But it wasnt until Ultra Violet - a special shade of purple - was named as 2018s Color of the Year by the Pantone Color Institute that we started to realize that purple could also be “an empowering color”, according to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the world famous US company. “Basically, its all about fighting the power, being bold and strong. Thats the mood for the year ahead,” lifestyle reporter Ellen Scott wrote on Metro. And we can already see things changing. In September, women in Saudi Arabia were finally given the right to drive, something they used to be sent to jail for doing. And in October, women all around the world started sharing their stories of being sexually assaulted by powerful men, after keeping their experiences quiet for a long time. “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than whats trending in the world of design; its truly a reflection of whats needed in our world today,” said Pressman in a news release. Getting its name from ultraviolet, a color that cant be seen in the rainbow spectrum, Ultra Violet happens to have the same symbolic meaning. “It exposes things you wouldnt be able to see under normal light,” Karin Rowland, a human rights activist in South Africa, told Mashable, referring to the movement of womens equality. But purple isnt just about fighting and challenging. Its also about creating and balancing, since it comes from the mixing of two opposite colors - passionate red and calm blue. “Ultra Violet brings hope and an uplifting message,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute told the New York Time. “It communicates originality and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” 11.
