There was a mistake in the design of the boat. After eight weeks and 2,700 miles, the boat began to break up. Heyerdahl decided not to continue the journey and got the six men with him out of danger. The next year Heyerdahl built another boat called Ra II, and began the same journey. This time the boat was strong enough for the Atlantic. The Ra II reached Barbados in fifty-seven days.
