He had little education and educated himself through self-study while helping with his fathers work on the farm. After his fathers death, Burns working as the chief labourer in the family. In 1786,in order to raise money to buy a ship ticket to Jamaica. He published his first collection of poems and immediately won great fame.,He gave up his idea to emigrate to Jamaica and went to Edinburgh to publish his second collection of poems. He was welcomed by the intellectuals and the gentry class of Edinburgh. Burns supported the French Revolution and in 1792 he sent four small guns to Paris to pay tribute to the revolutionary government. But they were intercepted by the customhouse and this brought Burns into clash with the government. Burns devoted the last 12 years of his life to collecting Scottish folk songs.,Burns reputation,He is an excellent native poet of Scotland. He is regarded as a pioneer of the romantic movement and after his death became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism. A cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish Diaspora around the world, celebration of his life and work became almost a national charismatic cult during the 19th and 20th centuries, and his influence has long been strong on Scottish.,He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland , and celebrated worldwide. He is not only famous as a lyricist on the themes of love and friendship and nature, but he is a patriotic poet and a writer of political verse calling for national independence for Scotland and liberty, equality and fraternity for all the people in the world.,The greatest thing about Burns is that he is a peasant poet, that he comes from the people and therefore can understand the people and share their feelings and thoughts. It is famous in many countries , especially in the English-speaking world; Traditionally, it can be used to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight. By extension, it is also sung at funerals, graduations, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions. Consequently ” For auld lang syne”, as it appears in the first line of the chorus, is loosely translated as “ for (the sake of) old times”.,Structure Part1,give us advisory reminder and lay emphasis on not forgetting the old friends; Part2,trace back to the passed days they spent together and sigh with feeling that time and tide wait for no man. Part3,express his distress and grief when they are faced with departure. No tears, no words and only alcohol. Part4,celebrate together for their great ,profound and eternal friendship. And never forget.,The poem begins by posing a rhetorical question as to whether it is right that old times be forgotten, and is generally interpreted as a call to remember long-standing friendships.
