Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWaraumesnewreoibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesuhineoffreedom,butthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinunrivalledproerity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworldsstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinefailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisioamongourownpeople. WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstravelledslowlyacrothelandbyhorseback,andacrotheoceanbyboat.Nowthesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastitantaneouslytobillioaroundtheworld.Communicatioandmerceareglobal.Investmentismobile.Technologyisalmostmagical,andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal. WeearnourlivelihoodinAmericatodayinpeacefulpetitionwithpeopleallacrotheEarth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillioofAmericawhoareabletopeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforle,whenotherscaotworkatall,whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatetobankruptourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenthefearofcrimerolawabidingcitizeoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillioo Weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongste,butwehavenotdoneso.Iteadwehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fracturedoureconomy,andshakenourconfidence.Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.Americahaveeverbeenarestle,questing,hopefulpeople,andwemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionandwillofthosewhocamebeforeus.FromourRevolutiontotheCivilWar,totheGreatDepreion,totheCivilRightsmovement,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtocotructfromthesecrisesthepillarsofourhistory.ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundatioofournationwewouldneeddramatihangefromtimetotime.Well,myfellowAmerica,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit. Ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownrenewal.ThereisnothingwrongwithAmericathatcaotbecuredbywhatisrightwithAmerica. Andsotodaywepledgeanendtotheeraofdeadlockanddrift,andanewseasonofAmericanrenewalhasbegun. TorenewAmericawemustbebold.Wemustdowhatnogenerationhashadtodobefore.Wemustinvestmoreinourownpeople,intheirjo,andintheirfuture,andatthesametimecutourmaivedebt.andwemustdosoinaworldinwhichwemustpeteforeveryoortunity.Itwillnotbeeasy.Itwillrequiresacrifice,butitcanbedone,anddonefairly.Notchoosingsacrificeforitsownsake,butforourownsake.Wemustprovideforournationthewayafamilyprovidesforitschildren. TorenewAmericawemustmeetchallengesabroad,aswellasathome.Thereisnolongeracleardivisionbetweenwhatisforeignandwhatisdomestic.Theworldeconomy,theworldenvironment,theworldAIDScrisis,theworldarmsrace:theyaffectusall.Todayasanoldorderpaes,thenewworldismorefree,butlestable.Communismscollaehascalledfortholdanimosities,andnewdangers.Clearly,Americamustcontinuetoleadtheworldwedidsomuchtomake. WhileAmericarebuildsathome,wewillnotshrinkfromthechallengesnorfailtoseizetheoortunitiesofthisnewworld.Togetherwithourfriendsandallies,wewillworktogethertoshapechange,lestitengulfus.Whenourvitalinterestsarechallenged,orthewillandcocienceoftheinternationalmunityisdefied,wewillact;withpeacefuldiplomacywheneverpoible,withforcewhenneceary. ThebraveAmericaservingournationtodayinthePersianGulf,inSomalia,andwhereverelsetheystand,aretestamenttoourresolve,butourgreateststrengthisthepowerofourideas,whicharestillnewinmanylands.Acrotheworld,weseethemembracedandwerejoice.Ourhopes,ourhearts,ourhands,arewiththoseoneverycontinent,whoarebuildingdemocracyandfreedom.TheircauseisAmericascause.TheAmericanpeoplehavesummonedthechangewecelebratetoday.Youhaveraisedyourvoicesinanunmistakablechorus,youhavecastyourvotesinhistoriumbers,youhavechangedthefaceofcongre,thepresidency,andthepoliticalproceitself.Yes,you,myfellowAmerica,haveforcedthering.Nowwemustdotheworktheseasondemands.TothatworkInowturnwithalltheauthorityofmyoffice.Iaskthecongretojoinwithme;butnopresident,nocongre,nogovernmentcanundertakethismiionalone. MyfellowAmerica,you,too,mustplayyourpartinourrenewal.IchallengeanewgenerationofyoungAmericatoaseasonofservice,toactonyouridealism,byhelpingtroubledchildren,keepingpanywiththoseinneed,recoectingourtornmunities.Thereissomuchtobedone.Enough,indeed,formillioofotherswhoarestillyounginirit,togiveofthemselvesinservice,too.Inservingwerecognizeasimple,butpowerful,truth:weneedeachother,andwemustcareforoneanother.TodaywedomorethancelebrateAmerica,werededicateourselvestotheveryideaofAmerica,anideaborninrevolution,andrenewedthroughtwocenturies
