AReportonObservationofCollegeEnglishClasses 文/谭蓉蓉 ThislongEnglishclasscouldbedividedintothreeparts,andeachpartlasted45minutes,sointhisreportonepartoftheclasswillbecalledasmallclass.Thisreportisbasedontheobservationofthreesmallclasses. Thefirstsmallclass ThemaintaskofthissmallclasswastocorrecttheanswerofthesentencetranslationfromChineseintoEnglish,whichwasthehomeworkoflastclass.Theteacherhadalreadycheckedtheassignmentwithoutleavinganycorrection.Theteacherleftthetaskofcorrectingthewronganswerstostudentsthemselves.However,studentswerenotsupposedtogethisorherownanswersheet,buttoexchangewithoneanother.Afterthedistributionoftheanswersheets,eachstudenthadgotsomeotherstudentstranslationassignment.Theyweregiventenminutestocheckthesentencetranslationandtoprepareforpresentation,whichwasfollowedbytheclassdiscussion.EachvolunteerpresenterwassupposedtoreadouttheoriginalEnglishtranslationhehadgot,whetherhethoughtthetranslationwasgoodornot.Thenthewholeclassdiscussedwhetheritwasgoodornotandgradeditorcorrectedit.Whenthediscussionwasover,theteacherspokeouttheremendedansweranditsexplanation.DuringtheexplanationtheteachertaughtsomenewEnglishwordsandgrammar.AltogethertenChinesesentenceswerediscussedandtranslatedintoEnglish. Thesecondsmallclass Inthissmallclass,anewunit(unit4)waslearned.ThetitlefortextoneisAManfromStratford:WilliamShakespeare.Attheverybeginning,somestudentspresentedinChinesesomebackgroundinformationaboutWilliamShakespearetothewholeclass,whichwastheassignmentfromlastclassofcollectingasmuchinformationaboutWilliamShakespeareasyoucan.Thenthewholeclassdiscussedandansweredthepre-readingquestions,andpracticedexerciseoneandtwoattachedtothetext.Exerciseonewastousesomewordsorsentencestosummarizethecontentofeachparagraph.Exercisetwowasaboutthevocabulary.Afterthat,theteacheraskedaquestion:whatisthemostdifficultpartinthetextduringyourreading?Theanswerstothisquestionweregoingtobetheemphasisoftheexplanationwhentheteacherbegantointerpretthetext.Theexplanationwentslowbecausealmosteveryword,everysentenceandtheimplicationbehindthewordswereinterpreted.Whenthissmallclasswasover,thefirstparagraphhadnotfinishedreadingyet. Thethirdsmallclass Thissmallclasscontinuedwiththeexplanationofthetext.Duringtheinterpretationstudentswerepermittedtoaskanyquestionsfreelybasedontheunderstandingofthetext,andthewholeclassdiscussedaboutittilltheteacherspokeoutananswer.Theteacherspentalotoftimeinleadingthestudentstoappreciatethecarefulchoiceofthewordsinthetext.Theplexlongsentencesweresupposedtobeparaphrasedbythestudents,andafterdiscussionthereferenceanswerwaspresentedbytheteacher.Fourparagraphsofthetexthadbeenreadattheendofthisclass. Assignment: 1.Findthebackgroundinformationaboutthe“grammarschool”whichappearedinthetext. 2.Finishthetaskofreadingprehensionintheexercisebookfrompage48topage50. Comment MorethanoneteachingmethodisusedinthisEnglishclass.TheoldestGrammar-Translationmethodwasusedinthefirstsmallclass.Thewholeclasswasinvolvedinthelearningactivityoftranslationexerciseandgrammarexplanationanddrillwaspracticed.Meanwhile,themunicativewayisalsopracticedthroughoutallthreesmallclassesbecauseclassdiscussionrunsthroughallthethreesmallclasses.WealsofindthatthisEnglishclassisalearner-orientedone.Alotofchancesareprovidedforthestudentstospeakoutintheclassandtheycanlearnallthattheywanttoknow.Theassignmentisalsoachallengetostudentsbecausetheyneedtoconsultmanyreferencebookstogettheanswer.Generallyspeaking,theEnglishclassisveryinterestingandinstructive,andtheinteractionandmunication
