By the end of the war, however, people were 22 saving their money and limiting their use of items. They were ready to have some fun. 23 Europe and Japan whose industries had been 24 by World War II, factories in the United States could quickly be changed from production of wartime items to mass production of 25 luxury items as cars. Two other factors also helped the 26 of the United States take cars into their lives- 27 oil prices and drivable roads. 28 the discovery of oil fields in both Texas and Oklahoma, the price of gasoline was well within the 29 of the average families. Also, the flat, open plains of the Midwest were well suited for 30 new roads designed for easy travel by car.As cars grew in 31 in the U.S., there were also changes in lifestyle. Some mistakes we make are about money, but most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” “And Paul - - why didnt I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, its too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends - or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we dont really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “Youre a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “Youre a lucky guy” or “Youre a lucky gal,” thats being friendly. But “lucky dog” ? Theres a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesnt see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesnt think you deserve your luck.“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isnt important. Its telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you havent got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someones words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake. 41.When the writer recalls the things that happened between him and his friends, he _. A. is sorry that his friends let him down B. thinks it was a mistake to view Jim as a friend C. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him D. feels he may not have “read” his friends true feelings correctly 42. By saying “Youre a lucky dog.”, the speaker _. A. is just being friendly B. has a hidden jealous feeling behind the words C. is humorous to apply the word “dog” to people D. expresses the same meaning as “Youre a lucky guy.” Or “Youre a lucky gal.” 43.If you followed the advice of the writer, you would _. A. weigh carefully what people say to determine their real meaning B. have no doubts about our friends C. trust what other people say D. get along well with people44.This passage tries to tell you how to _. A. say things carefully B. keep people friendly without trusting them C. avoid mistakes about both money and peopleD. avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell youB Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. A billboard passes by outside the bus window every couple of minutes. Buy Super Clean Toothpaste. Drink Good Wet Root Beer. Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of You Need It! Buy It Now!The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if youve traveled that way before. If the driver is particularly reckless (鲁莽的) or daring, the ride can be thrilling. “ Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left hand lane? ”After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But youve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and theres a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat,of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now youve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests, even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.45. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To give the writers opinion about long bus trips.B. To persuade you to take a long bus trip.C. To explain how bus trips and television shows differ.D. To describe the billboards along the road.46. The writer of this passage would probably like .A. bus drivers who arent recklessB. driving aloneC. a television set on the bus D. no billboards along the road47. The writer feels long bus rides are like TV shows because .A. the commercials both on TV shows and on billboards along the road are funB. they both have a beginning, a middle, and an end, with commercialsC .the drivers are always reckless on TV shows just as they are on busesD. both traveling and watching TV are not exciting48. The writer thinks that the end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning because both are .A. exciting B. comfortable C. tiring D. boring CWe can offer you a place at one of the best universities in Britain. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that dont have pest(害虫)problems.Even better, Paleys Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat sent out by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide that they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paleys company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and improvements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States,” says George Oerther of Texas A& M, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.53. Plants will give off an increased amount of heat when they are .A. sprayed with pesticides B. facing an infrared scanner C. in poor physical condition D. exposed to massive sun rays 54. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to .A. measure the size of the affected area B. estimate the damage to the crops C. draw a color-coded map D. locate the problem area 55. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties, one of which is .A. the lack of official support B. its high cost C. the lack of financial support D. its failure to help increase production 56. Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of .A. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce B. growing concern about too much use of pesticides on crops C. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture D. full support from agricultural experts EListening to music while you drive can improve your speed and ability to get away from accidents, according to Australian psychologists(心理学家).But turning your car radio up to full volume could probably make you end up in an accident. The performance of difficult tasks can be affected if people are subjected to loud noise. The experience of pulling up at traffic lights alongside cars with loud music made some psychologists in the University of Sydney look into whether loud music has something to do with driving. The psychologists invited 60 men and women aged between 20 and 28 as subjects and tested them on almost the same driving tasks under three noise conditions: silence, rock music played at a gentle 55 decibels (分贝), and the same music at 85 decibels. For 10 minutes the subjects sat in front of a screen operating a simple machine like a car. They had to track a moving disk on screen, respond to traffic signals changing color, and brake (刹车) in response to arrows that appeared without warning. On the tracking task, there was no difference in performance under the three noise conditions. But under both the loud and quiet music conditions, the performers “braked” at a red light about 50 milliseconds sooner than they did when there was no rock music at all. That could mean a reduction in braking distance of a couple of meters actually, the difference between life and death for a pedestrian(行人).When it came to the arrows that appeared across the visual field, the psychologists found that when the music was quiet, people responded faster to objects in their central field of sight by about 50 milliseconds. For the people listening at 85 decibels, resp
