Features, style of Charles Dickenss writingsAbstract:CharlesDickens(1812-1870),wasthemosteminentnovelistintheearlyVictori-anperiod.Hewasaprolificwriter.Hewrote20-oddnovelsandmanyotherwritingsallhislife. For the convenience of study, Dickens literary career may be roughly divided into three periods. Through the analysis of his works to analyze the feature and style of Dickenss writing in three periodsKey words: Oliver Twist,David Copperfield,A Tale of Two Cities In first period, Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century.Dickens, who was born in a poor family, wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickenshe believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I dont think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.However, in spite of these defects, the novel is a powerful exposure of bourgeois society. Oliver Twist is one of the best works of Dickens. According to this description of work, we can learn that this nave optimism is characteristic of the petty-bourgeois humanitarians of his time. For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary characters for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do well to both the people he has helped and himself. The second periodDickenss second period began from 1842, the year after his first visit to America. Before the visit, Dickens thought of the United States as a world in which there were no class divisions and the relations between men were humanitarian. David Copperfield. Two hundred years ago, England was covered with strong darkness, just like the foggy city, London. Fortunately, Dickens brought his favorite son, David Copperfield, which was almost based on his own life experience and deep cognition to British society of the nineteen century, to cultivate peoples hearts by revealing the great influence that money took on the marriage, family, and the whole society, leading British, even us in the modern society, to a right direction. What is money and what are we are considered questions in this book and it deserves us to meditate. Dickens embodied the real social appearance at different levels by picturing Davids whole life, sufferings and joys. And the series of tragedies are mainly resulted from money. We can get that Mr. Murdstone married Davids mother just for her money instead of herself; Emily escaped from her marriage with Stevens also because she could not repulse the enticements of money; and Sherpa degenerated step by step and eventually ended up in a prison with the addiction of money. From all of that, we can draw a conclusion that the money may be the original of all the miseries and sufferings, but actually Dickens viewed his point by the character, Micawber, who was very poor but always worked hard to make his life easier and better. “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.” he said so to David and also told the truth to the public. Nobody can live without money, but what on earth does money mean to us ? It is really of great importance to buy food to keep our organs and tissues functioning regularly, to pay for the tuition to get high education for a brighter future. But that s never enough to lost ourselves just in order to get something that is not valued by our nature. What Micawber said just expressed Dickenss attitude to money. One should be content with the money he has and do not expect to get more money than he should have. Because whether you are happy or not has nothing to do with the money; even in the poorest times, people also have the rights to be happy, to enjoy the life. According to a recent survey in the Internet, the happiest thing in the world is a Chinese cook lives with a Japanese woman in a British town. It showed that it is the peace of our hearts, instead of money, that deserves us to pursue with every effort and it makes a point. And money is just like a witch who is full of magic that helps us forget who we are. She tended to lead us to focus on what we lost rather than what we hold in hand. Even a survivor after a severe earthquake still has a lot to cherish, his families, his friends, his hands, his feet, even his memories of families. Without money, we still can live happily. Our mood is depend on how we look at it, so do not value too much about the money and pay more attention to your inside, which matters a lot. Money indeed changed people a lot in this novel, from an innocent child to a sophisticated one. But there are always some people fighting against the social trend and keeping what they are. I am greatly impressed by Bessie words, Never be mean in anything; never be false; never be cruel. Avoid those three vices, Trot, and I can always be hopeful of you., said to David. Strange but kind, she adopted David when he escaped from his stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. No matter how powerful the money is, we can resist it with a resolved heart and an undeviating faith. Bessies words took a fundamental influence on Davids whole life. Who are we must be another theme of this book. David spent his entire life to find who he really was and eventually became a writer living happily with his aunt and Bessie.David Copperfield was Dickenss own favourite. It is written in the first person and is the most autobiographical of all his books. In writing the novel, Dickens threw into it deep feeling and much of his own experience in his younger days. It was written at a time when his creative powers had reached their height. All this has given the book a combination of verisimilitude, sense of familiarity and artistic maturity seldom met with in his other novels. I always believe that the most beautiful scenery always stays at the first place you start your journey. However, how could we go back to the same place? So watch out every step well take now. If only life can stay what it used to be like. There were no money, or no miseries and sufferings money bring about. The Third Period. His novels of this period are much “darker” in content than their predecessors. ”Dickens, consciously and subconsciously, shows himself more and more at odds with bourgeois society and more aware of (and exasperated by) the absence of any readily available alternative.”A Tale of Two Cities (1859) appeared in the period when he achieved great popularity for his public readings. It was a novel based on the French Revolution in the late 1800s. In that terrible time, every moment was full of great fear. Before that great revolution, the common people, especially the peasants, were poor, hungry and unhappy. The Marquis of Evremond was the representative of the hateful noble men. He and his brother killed a beautiful girl ,her brother ,and her father Dr. Manette ,who knew their scandals clearly ,was put into prison for no good reasons for 18 years .During the dark and long period ,he was mentally and physically damaged . His daughter, Lucie, was a gentle and beautiful girl .She was loved by two young gentlemen at the same timeCharles Darnay and Sydney Carton .Though Charles was a French man and Sydney was an Englishman, the two men looked like each other very much, but Lucie only fell in love with Charles. On the day of Lucies marriage to Charles Darnay, Charles told Dr. Manette that he was the nephew of The Marquis of Evremond. “The door of the Doctors room opened, and he came out with Charles Darnay. He was so deadly palewhich had not been the case when they went in togetherthat no vestige of color was to be seen in his face. But, in the composure of his manner he was unaltered, except that to the shrewd glance of Mr. Lorry it disclosed some shadowy indication that the old air of avoidance and dread had lately passed over him, like a cold wind.” In order to save his daughters happiness, Dr. Manette put his hate for the hateful family aside and pretended to know nothing. Try to think about it ,in those years that was full of anger and revenge ,if a person were treated like that ,he must hate the whole family of the noble extremely, just like Madame Defarge, whose family was destroyed by The Evremondes brother ,but he forgave him! To our surprise, Doctor Manette did this! ”It was a hard parting, though it was not for long. But her father cheered her, and said at last, gently disengaging himself from her enfolding arms, Take her, Charles! She is yours!” From the point, we can see how calm and wise Dr. Manette was. But the past hadnt disappeared and been forgotten ,the terrible thing was waiting for them because of his special status, Charles ,who was very kind to others and did everything he could to redeem his familys crime ,was sentenced to death! Sadness hang over them day and night, and hero always appear at this time Sydney Carton . “Darnay counted the hoursnine, gone forever, ten, eleven, twelve, gone forever”, in fact, he counted the time for Sydney the brave man would give his life to keep his dear Lucies love alive. In the prison, he made Charles a swoon and put on Darnarys clothes. When Charles was safe, he waited for death lonely and calmly. Then he met with an innocent pure girl, they gave encouragement to each other so when they faced death they wouldnt be too afraid. The atmosphere around the Guillotine was terrible, but Sydney was very calmhe died for love! He knew that what matters are the lives we touch when we are alive. It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.” The tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions. Its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of France. The author made the experience of the fictional character of Dr. Manette as the main clue. The plots are complicated, and they are flexuous and dramatic. The structure is complete and rigorous. Dickens had dear love and hate. He praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked. The motivation of the novel may be just warn the English dominators. But I think we can learn something meaningful from the tale of two citiesConclusion: Charles Dickens is a master story-teller. His language could, in a way, be compared
