South Luogu Lane 南锣鼓巷Also called Nan luo gu xiang, Nan luo gu Alley,Nan luo gu xiang Hutong.HistorySouth Luogu Lane is 786 meters long and 8 meters wide, connecting Gulou East St. on its north and Dianmen East St. on the south. South Luogu Lane was built in 1267 when Yuan Da Du was constructed, and was a component of the market area in Yuan Da Dus urban layout, which had the imperial government built in the front, the market area at the back, the imperial ancestral temple on the left, and the sacrificial altar on the right. The lane was part of the ZhaoHui Community in the Yuan Dynasty, and served as the dividing line between the ZhaoHui community and the JingGong Community in the Ming Dynasty. It was under the jurisdiction of the XiangHuang Banner during the years of Emperor Qianlong, and belonged to the Left III Community in the late years of Emperor Guangxu and during the years of Emperor Xuantong. During the Republic of China years, it belonged to the Inner V Community.The Lane was called “Luoguo Lane” in the Ming Dynasty due to its “Luoguo” feature with the middle part higher than the two ends. In 1750, the lane got a homonymic name of “Luogu Lane”, and was divided into South Luogu Lane and Northern Luogu Lane(now within the Andingmen Community). The name of the lane remained “South Luogu Lane” during and after the years of the Republic of China. The hutong was briefly called “Huihuang St.” during the Cultural Revolution and later regained its current name.South Luogu Lane was built under the architectural concept of “residential blocks” with the lane serving as the central line dividing 8 parallel hutongs on each side, hence forming the outlook of a fish bone, or a “Wugong”. Thus, the lane was also called “Wugong Lane”. South Luogu Lane is the only remaining traditional residential area in China that still fully preserves the chess-board style layout of hutongs typically found in the Yuan Dynasty, with its scale, quality and historical value unmatched by any other lanes.South Luogu Lane was among the first 25 areas listed for historical preservation by the Beijing Municipal Government in November 1990. Currently, within the South Luogu Lane area, one site has been listed for national level preservation, 11 sites for municipal level preservation, and 9 sites for district level preservation. With its impressive historical and cultural legacy, South Luogu Lane has become an attractive area for tourism and cultural creativity in the ancient capital Beijing. Today, South Luogu Lane is among one of the oldest hutongs around and has a history of over 800 years. This near 800-meter long North-South alleyway is filled with bars, cafes, restaurants, artsy little shops, souvenir shops and cute boutiques. Located in the Nan Luo Gu Xiang 49, the Wen Yu cheese shop is not big, it just has a brown signboard, two red wooden door, a few pieces of simple table, but it is still very famous. It is said that, the shopkeeper here was a master craftsman, and his ancestor is the aulic chefs disciple. Up to now they still insist on their daily limit, they just sell a certain number of cheeses every day. 2 / band-aids 8 “Band-aids 8” is a T-shirt shop which condensed the Beijing characteristic, the boss Jiang Sen Hai is a English boy who migrated to Beijing. He loves Beijing, and he designed T-shirts to show his love to Beijing. There are many special things which we hadnt seen for years in his shop, such as: enamel red basin, old sheet toys, childrens tricycle, the first a subway ticket in Beijing, these things can either become indoor decoration, or become T-shirt marks here. 3 / pottery workshop Located in the Nan Luo Gu Xiang 23, the pottery workshop, is a good place to realize art dream. Its headquarters located in Hong Kong, and the company now owns many young artists. The products are original and creative, it is really a great place choose gifts. 4 / passer-by Opened in 1999, passer-by is undoubtedly the first restaurant to become famous in Nan Luo Gu Xiang .The bushes and trees are luxuriantly green and the shade of the trees covers the stone roads. No matter how noisy the street outside is, the small courtyard always maintains the quiet atmosphere and the vicissitudes of life. The bosses are a couple of famous backpacker, so here also becomes a focal point for backpackers all over the world. The traditional siheyun, classical furniture, mellow coffee, have become a wonderful memory for numerous tourists. And whom do you regard as a passer-by in your life? 5 / Chuanyun bookstore Located in the Nan Luo Gu Xiang, No.111, Chuanyun book store have been set up for 12 years .You can find many old discs here and professional art periodicals, which makes here a Mecca for artistic young and movie fans.6 / Guitar BarIt is difficult to imagine that we are able to enjoy such wonderful guitar melodies in the space of 7 square meters. Perhaps it is the best distance to listen to the guitar music. Their playing and singing show the broken-heart love and unrepentant youth. Two guitarists give up their excellent working environment and come here to keep their own taste and understanding of music going on, just to entertain other visitors who love playing the guitar. Walking into Nan Luo Gu Xiang, you will be thankful that such a lane can be preserved in the middle of gorgeous urbanization of Beijing, where Beijing elements fill and stretch. This alley which is both old and modern is famous for its charm of permanent development as time going by. We have to say that it is a miracle.
