Theme: Broke tradition, seeking his subjects in the small happenings of country life and the talk of countrymen, children, and doings and feelings of humble people, and emotion from his inner heart. Language: He stuck to emphasizing the purest by simplest words.,Behold her, single in the field, 看,一个孤独的高原姑娘, Yon solitary Highland Lass! Reaping and singing by herself; Stop here, or gently pass! Alone she cuts and binds the grain, And sings a melancholy strain; O listen! for the Vale profound Is overflowing with the sound. More welcome notes to weary bands Of travellers in some shady haunt, 在沙漠中的绿荫间 Among Arabian sands: 抚慰过疲惫的旅客; A voice so thrilling neer was heard In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird, Breaking the silence of the seas 在遥远的赫布利底群岛 Among the farthest Hebrides. ,The Solitary Reaper,Will no one tell me what she sings?- 她唱什么,谁能告诉我? Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow For old, unhappy, far-off things, And battles long ago: 是把古代的战争吟咏? Or is it some more humble lay, 也许她的歌比较卑谦 Familiar matter of to-day? Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain, That has been, and may be again? As if her song could have no ending; I saw her singing at her work, 只见她一边唱一边干活, And oer the sickle bending; I listend, motionless and still; 我凝神不动,听她歌唱, And, as I mounted up the hill, The music in my heart I bore, Long after it was heard no more. ,Analysis of The Poet,In this poem, he writes specifically about real human music encountered in a beloved, rustic setting. The song of the young girl reaping in the fields is incomprehensible to him , and what he appreciates is its tone, its expressive beauty, and the mood it creates within him, rather than its explicit content, at which he can only guess. To an extent, then, this poem ponders the limitations of language, as it does in the third stanza (“Will no one tell me what she sings?”). But what it really does is praise the beauty of music and its fluid expressive beauty, the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling” that Wordsworth identified at the heart of poetry.,English Romanticism,Time: It prevailed in England during the period 17981832; Beginning: Lyrical Ballads in 1798 End: death of Walter Scott in 1832,Characteristics of Romanticism,1.Imagination: the supreme faculty of the mind (dynamic and active) 2.Idealization of Nature :describing and capturing natural phenomena 3.Individualism :Saw man as an individual in the solitary state, emphasized the special qualities of each individuals mind 4.Glorification of the commonplace 5.The lure of the exotic,Two schools of Romantic Poets,Passive/negative or escapist ( elder generation) These writers protested against capitalist development by turning to the feudal past, turning to nature for protection.
