Introverts hate to chat about small subjects with people. They are fine when you talk one on one but seem to get lost in the crowd when theres a group around. If you are talking to an introvert, you might find that your first few conversations go one of two ways. Either theyll seem to get bored and not say much or theyll seem to skate over small talk in favor of more in-depth topics. What you need to know is that the introvert is not being rude. It is just that they dont like small talk. Heres why.Small talk serves as a gateway toward deeper conversation. Some introverts dont realize that small talk will actually help them get to the bigger topics. You dont need to stay on small talk forever. However, sometimes introverts feel that even the short amount of time it takes to get into the real conversation is a waste of time. Small talk is very fast. Someone says something and this should be followed up with a quick response. But introverts like to chew on their words before saying them aloud. Before they answer, theyll mull over different thoughts.Small talk by its very nature invites more people to join in. The more people who join the conversation, the more the introvert will tend to step back. As a result, theyll be quiet. Small talk is about throwing out subjects in the hope that one or more of them can be turned into a mon point of interest. The listening involved with small talk is not in-depth. The purpose is about listening lightly so you can figure out the right topics to spend some time on. Introverts tend to be great listeners, but they use active listening rather than light listening. This makes them wonderful friends, but can also make it difficult for new people to understand why theyre so quiet.24. How do introverts respond to a chat?A. They try to avoid it. B. They get excited about it.C. They give it their full attention. D. They focus on unimportant topics.25. What do we know about small talk?A. It goes slowly. B. It costs people a lot of time.C. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting, you are putting yourself at increased chance of heart disease, cancers and an early death. In other words, even if you exercise energetically, sitting for long periods is bad for you. So whats wrong with sitting? One is that sitting is one of the most passive things you can do. You burn more energy by chewing gum than you do sitting still in a chair. pared to sitting, standing in one place is hard work. To stand, you have to tense your leg muscles, and the muscles of your back and shoulders. While standing, you often change from leg to leg. All of this burns energy. For many people, weight gain is a matter of slow increase. Thus, a little more time on your feet today and tomorrow can easily make the difference between remaining thin and getting fat. So part of the problem with sitting a lot is that you dont use as much energy as those who spend more time on their feet. This makes it easier to gain weight, and makes you more likely to suffer from the health problems that fatness often brings. Some people have advanced solutions: replace your sit-down desk with a stand-up desk. Make sure that your television can only operate if you are practicing on an exercise bike. Replace your office chair with a therapy(治疗) ball: this uses more muscles and more energy than a normal chair, because you have to support your back and work to keep balanced. But whatever you choose, know this. It is clear: be careful of your chair. 28. The main purpose of writing this passage is to _. A. suggest sitting less. B. advise exercising often. C. avoid gaining weight. D. escape standing more. 29. From this passage, we know that _. A. less exercise will reduce the chance of having disease.B. taking exercise regularly but sitting more will do good. C. standing burns nearly as much energy as sitting still does.D. energy-burning activities may help you enjoy good health.30. The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refers to _. A. gaining weight. B. burning energy. C. sitting too much. D. standing more. 31. A therapy ball is mentioned in the last paragraph to _. A. tell us to walk while working in the office. B. suggest a way to settle the sitting problem. C. support our back and keep us balanced. D. provide a better cure for our backache.DA British-designed electronic newspaper which is made of plastic and no larger than a table mat(垫子) is to enter the market next year. For people who speak in an ancient tongue as their mother language, its the main connection with their ancestors. 36 And it is also how they imagine the future. 37 Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few people, like Yaghan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are dying. Why are humans speaking fewer languages than before? 38 Nowadays, its more useful to speak certain languages like English rather than others.
