I have no memory of December 27, xx, but I can tell you this much-it was the day my five-year-old son, Dane, saved my life. All the practicing Dane and I had done came together that day. Teaching him to learn our home address, how to use the phone, how to dial 911, and how to answer the questions a 911 operator might ask him if he did have to call-paid off. At about 3:30 that afternoon, I wasnt feeling well and had been lying on the sofa. At some point, I went to the bathroom and it was there that I fell down and went unconscious. When I fell, my face hit the floor, causing two of my teeth to break off. And my body blocked the door. Dane must have heard me fall, because he came to the bathroom and called out to me. When I did not answer him, he looked in through a gap in the door and saw the blood from my injured mouth. Thats when his “training” kicked in. First, Dane phoned my mother-his grandma and when Grandma didnt answer the phone, he called 911. Dane remained calm, stayed on the line and told the operator what had happened and where we lived. He turned on the outside light and opened the door for police and paramedics(医务人员), and then led them to me. Recently, emergency responders in Taber, the town where we live, honored Dane at his school during an assembly(集会) of his kindergarten classmates and other students. The Taber Police Service praised my son and gave him a certificate(证书) in recognition of his “knowing exactly what to do in an emergency situation.” Dane saved my life, and he is my angel! If I had not taught my son how to react when there was ever an emergency in our home, I am quite certain that I would not be alive now. I strongly suggest other parents understand the life-and-death importance of taking the time to teach their kids these skills, too. Children can learn these things at a very early age. I know this first-hand, as Dane was three years old when I started teaching him.24. Emergency does happen often in our everyday life.B. Parents should teach their young children how to deal with emergency.C. Parents must learn to be paramedics before learning emergency knowledge.D. It doesnt take much time and patience to teach children emergency knowledge. C.In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they dont know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you dont know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large, too large for many people. If you cant finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows youre taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”, which means an especially big noon meal. Tipping plays an important role in American peoples daily life. It reflects a kind of good manners and appreciation for the services provided. Usually tips are not added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. Generally speaking, a tip of about 15is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. 28. Which of the following statements is true?A. American people like sitting with people they dont know.B. A hostess will seat a small group at a large table if its available.C. American people never sit with people they dont know even if they have to wait.D. Americans think it not polite to smoking without asking when sitting with people they dont know.29. What is served before you order?A. Bread B. Butter C. Cold water D. Coffee30. What do American people always do when servings are too large for them?A. They take the food home with a “doggie bag” for their dogs. B. They just leave the food on the table and go away. C. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them. D. They take the food home with a “doggie bag” and enjoy it later. 31. What can you learn about “tips” according to the last paragraph?A. The price of the meal usually includes the tip.B. People are not always expected to pay tips after a meal.C. Tips are supposed to be left on the table when customers leave.D. Customers should give a tip of about 25% of the price of the meal. D.Since the end of World WarI (WWI) in 1918, Canadians and millions of others around the world have paused at the 11thhour of the 11thday of the 11thmonth to honor the sacrifice(牺牲) our soldiers have made in different ways, fighting for the freedom that we all enjoy today.Known as Remembrance Day, the day originated as a tribute (致敬) to the soldiers of WWI, a dark period for our young country, which claimed the lives of over 60, 000 soldiers and civilians nationwide. As there are no more surviving soldiers of WWI, today we rely on the wisdom and words of those soldiers who fought in the wars that followed and this day now also recognizes their heroic contribution. They tell us to always remember what those brave souls fought for, and all they ask in return is that we never forget.Thats why we wear the red poppy(罂粟花); Thats why when we see a soldier in uniform we should stop to say “Thank you”; thats why we take a pause from our busy lives for two short minutes today in honor of those brave people. Yet this message is fading away, year after year. Take for example the decision to allow parents to excuse students from Remembrance Day ceremonies at school. Not only does it show a lack of respect, but it distances the student from his or her classmates. It is difficult to understand why any Canadian parent would want to remove their child from the time-honored tradition of reading the poem in Flanders Fields, while a wreath(花环) of poppies is laid. It is more important than ever to teach school-aged children about our history, no matter how violent it was. Sheltering them from the realities of war is a great disservice. Understanding why conflicts happened, or happen today can help shape choices and decisions they make as adults.Of course, because we live in a free society, we cannot force an individual to do something.Itis unfortunate that some parents now have their children opt-out of the services. These people should be reminded they are free to make such choices only because of the men and women whom the rest of us are remembering.32. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a Remembrance Day activity today?A. Listening to stories told by WWI soldiers.B. Wearing a red poppy to show respect.C. Expressing thanks to soldiers in uniform.D. Stopping to remember the war dead at 11 a.m.33.What does the writer think of Canadian parents excusing their children of the Remembrance Day ceremonies?A. Disrespectful. B. Reasonable. C. Shocking D. Proper34. What can we learn from the passage?A. War history is too violent for school children to learn.B. People should be forced to learn about the realities of war.C. The contributions of the soldiers should always be remembered.D. Few students are willing to take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies.35. The underlined phrase “opt-out” in the last paragraph probably means_.A. regretted B. removed C. reminded D. recognized 第二节: (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Five Ways to Build Self-Confidence*Walk Faster One of the easiest ways to tell how a person feels about herself is to examine her walk. People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, or important work to do. Even if you arent in a hurry, you can increase your self-confidence by putting some energy in your step. 36 * 37 One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to an inspiring speech. Unluckily, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few. You can fill this need by creating a personal mercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that focuses on your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud whenever you need a confidence push.* Sit in the Front RowIn schools, offices and some other public places, people always sit at the back of the room. 38 . This reflects a lack of self-confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this meaningless fear and build your self-confidence* Speak UpDuring group discussions many people never express their opinions because theyre afraid that people will judge them for their saying something stupid. 39 By making an effort to express your opinions at least once in every group discussion, you will bee a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts and recognized as a leader by your peers(同龄人).* Work Out Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self- confidence. 40 By making your body fit and strong. You improve your physical appearance, refresh yourself, and acplish something positive. A. Listen to an Inspiring SpeechB. Create a Personal SpeechC. In fact most people are dealing with the same fear.D. Walking 25% faster will make you look and feel more important.E. In fact most people feel good after a walk. F. Most people prefer that because they are afraid of being noticed.G. If youre out of shape, youll feel insecure, unattractive, and less energetic. On a Saturday afternoon, we heard a weak meowing near the drain ditch (沟)outside our house in Kuala Lumpur(吉隆坡).
