2018-2019学年高二英语第一次月考(假期验收)试题第I卷第一部分 听力(略)第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A It was an autumn morning shortly after my husband and I moved into our first house. Our children were upstairs unpacking, and I was looking out of the window at my fathermoving around mysteriously on the front lawn. “What are you doing out there?”I called to him. He looked up, smiling, “Im making you a surprise.” I thought it could be just about anything. When we were kids, he always created something surprising for us. Today, however, Dad would say no more, and caught up in the business of our new life, I eventually forgot about his surprise. Until one gloomy day the next March when I glanced out of the window, I saw a dot of blue across the yard. I headed outside for a closer look. They were crocuses (番红花) throughout the front lawnblue, yellow and my favorite pink, with little faces moving up and down in the cold wind. I remembered the things Dad secretly planted last autumn. He knew how the darkness and dullness of winter always got me down. What could have been more perfectly timely to my needs? My fathers crocuses bloomed (开花) each spring for the next five seasons, always bringing the same assurance: Hard times are almost over. Hold on, keep going, and light is ing soon. Then a spring came with only half the usual blooms and the next spring there were none. I missed the crocuses, so I would ask Dad to e over and plant new bulbs. But I never did. He died suddenly one October day. My family were in deep sorrow, leaning on our faith. On a spring afternoon four years later, I was driving back when I felt depressed. It was Dads birthday, and I found myself thinking about him. This was not unusual-my family often talked about him, remembering how he lived up to his faith. Suddenly I slowed as I turned into our driveway. I stopped and stared at the lawn. There on the muddy grass with small piles of melting snow, bravely waving in the wind, was one pink crocus. How could a flower bloom from a bulb more than 18 years ago, one that hadnt bloomed in over a decade? But there was the crocus. Tears filled my eyes as I realized its significance. Hold on, keep going, and light is ing soon. The pink crocus bloomed for only a day, but it built my faith for a lifetime.21According to the first three paragraphs, we learn that _.Ait kept bothering the author not knowing what the surprise wasBthe author was unpacking when her father was making the surpriseCit was not the first time that the authors father had made a surpriseDthe author knew what the surprise was because she knew her father22Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?AThe author usually felt depressed in the season of winter.BThe authors father planted the crocuses to lift her low spirits.CThe author often thought about her father after he died.DThe crocuses bloomed each spring before her father died.23The authors father should be best described as _.Aa part time worker who loved flowers Ba kindhearted man who lived with faithCa fulltime gardener with skillful hands Dan ordinary man with doubts in his life24What can be the best title for the passage?ACrocusesMy Source of Faith BCrocusesFathers SurpriseCA Pink CrocusMy Memory DCrocuses in BlossomMy Favorite BMore than great drinks, great rewardsEnjoy all the benefits and more with your membership to our Loyalty Program!Whenever you pay with your membership account, youll earn a Star.Collect more Stars, earn more rewards.Three ways to join usBuy a Starbucks Card handy to create an account.Track your Stars online or through the mobile app, and well send an email when youve earned a reward. You can also join from your phone. They asked US participants in two related studies about parents lying to their children-either for the purpose of promoting appropriate behavior or to make them happy. In one of the studies, many parents reported they told their young children that bad things would happen if they didnt go to bed or eat what they were supposed to. Other parents reported inventing magical creatures. One explained, “We told our daughter that if she wrapped up all her pacifiers (橡皮奶嘴) like gifts, the fair would e and give them to the children who needed them.”In the other study, the researchers surveyed college students recollections about their parents lying and obtained similar results: parents often lie to their children even as they tell them that lying is unacceptable. The researchers refer to this practice as “parenting by lying”. “We are surprised by how often parenting by lying takes place,” said LEE. Though Heyman thinks that there are occasions when it is appropriate to be less than truthful with a child, she urges parents to think through the issues and consider alternatives before using lies.“Children sometimes behave in ways that are disruptive or are likely to harm their long-term interests,” said Heyman.“It is mon for them to try out a range of strategies, including lying, to stop them. However, parents should be concerned about the possible long-term negative consequences to childrens beliefs about honesty.”28The subject of parental lying _.Awas not allowed to be researched in the past Battracts little attention because it is monChasnt got many published results about it Dis being more and more popular29What does Heyman think of parental lying?AIt is a great parenting strategy. It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedmam, I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori arent very different from most students here at Linton Higt School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people , it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group. An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic-breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out-that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain. If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言)can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others dont. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group.”In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越感). Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and donts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook. The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, things about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story ”might have.32.The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to_ .A. introduce a topic B .present an argument C. describe the characters D. clarify his writing purpose33.An important negative effects of gossip is that it_.A. breaks up relationships B. embarrasses the listenerC. spreads information around D. causes unpleasant experiences34.In the authers opinion, many people like to gossip because it_.A.gives them a feeling of pleasure B. help them to make more friends C.makes them better at telling stories D. enables them to meet important people35.Professor David Wilson think that gossip can _.A. provide students with written rule B. help people watch their own behaviorsC. force school to impove student handbooks D. attract the polices attention to group behaviors第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)For college students, graduation signals an exciting new beginning. 36 Many students wonder: What do I do now? What career is best for me? Most expert advice on choosing careers boils down to the following points. Knowing YourselfWhat are your interests? Abilities? Skills? 37 The results may surprise you! These can be useful, but theyre not the last word. InvestigatingInvestigating occupations is much more difficult. For most people, there isnt just one right job, but several that could be satisfying. 38 Talk to people who have occupations that interest you. Find out what they like and dislike about their job. 39 Many people choose their careers because they believe strongly in a particular cause. Some might choose to work in areas like medicine, charity or environmental protection. Some have a strong interest in history or a love for the arts. 40 So in cases like these, the field is often chosen first, rather than the occupation itself.
