He was badly crippled (跛脚),and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare,I would be ashamed of the unwanted attention. It was difficult to walk togetherand because of that,we didnt say much as we went along. But as we started out,he always said,“You set the pace. I will try to follow you.” Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He went to work sick, and even in bad weather. He almost never missed a day,and would make it to the office even if others could not. It was a matter of pride for him. When snow or ice was on the ground,it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sister or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn,N.Y.,on a childs sleigh to the subway entrance. Once there,he would try to grasp handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice free. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside again until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home. When I think of it now,I am surprised at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to suffer from shame and disability. And I am also surprised at how he did itwithout bitterness or plaint. He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”,and if he found one,the owner was good enough for him. Now that I am older,I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still dont know exactly what a “good heart” is. But I know the times I dont have one myself. He has been away for many years now,but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my reluctance to be seen with him during our walks. If he did,I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was,how unworthy I was,how I regretted it. I think of him when I plain about my troubles, when I am envious of anothers good fortune, when I dont have a “good heart”(24)How did the man treat his father when he was young? A.He helped his father happily.B.He never helped his father.C.He helped his father, but not very happily.D.He only helped his father take a walk after supper.(25)As a disabled man,his father _. A.didnt work very hardB.didnt go to work from time to timeC.hated those who had good fortuneD.was happy and satisfied, and never lost hope(26)What does the underlined word “reluctance” mean in the article? It means _. A.angerB.sadnessC.happinessD.unwillingness(27)How did the father get to work usually? A.By subway.B.By bus.C.By wheelchair.D.By bike.C Different people use different languages. We Chinese speak Chinese, and, most of us are learning a foreign language. But there is another kind of language we need to know the language of the body. All over the world, people “talk with their hand, with their heads and with their eyes.” When Japanese people meet, they bow. When Indians meet, they put their hands together. What do American and British do? Americans are more informal (不拘小节的) than the British. They like to be friendly. They use first names, they ask questions and they talk easily about themselves. When they sit down, they like to relax in their chairs and make themselves fortable. British people are more reserved (保守的). They take more time to make friends. They like to know you before they ask your name. When British or American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with people they know well. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends (on one cheek only). When a man meets a man, he just smiles, and says, “Hello.” Men do not kiss each other, or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other. (28)In the passage, the writer thinks that body language is _. A.uselessB.difficultC.quite easyD.important(29)Which of the following is right? A.Different countries have the same body language.B.Different countries have different body languages.C.People in Asia share the same body language.D.Many people only use their body language.(30)If an American friend visits you, he probably _. A.sit straightB.never sits downC.makes fun of youD.sits freely(31)If you want to make a British friend, you may feel it _. A.impossibleB.too easyC.too difficultD.slowD What is it that makes people laugh? More than two thousand years ago the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle defined (定义) jokes as the pleasure that results from a feeling of triumph(胜利) by showing were better than someone else in a certain way. According to Aristotle and many other philosophers, all jokes depend mainly on showing inferiority in another person or group of personsthat is,putting it clearly,on showing that they are worse off than ourselves. Jokes raise our good opinion of ourselves at someone elses expense.Showing how much better than other people we are is only one reason we like jokes. Someone may also use a joke to express their anger or their cruelty or any other kind of action that is not acceptable to us. We feel free to laugh when we hear about someone sliding on a banana skin. The joke lets us express those attitudes which are usually unacceptable to society. This is probably the reason why some of the jokes, especially those involving cruelty, are so popular with certain people. Besides, all jokes depend on our enjoyment of laughing at something that is strange and out of place because its different from things which are happening around it. The same situation can be either sad or pleasant, depending entirely on how strange and out of place it is. If a girl in a bathing suit falls into a swimming pool,we dont laugh because nothing unusual has happened. But if a man in a smart suit falls in,the situation is at once unusual in a pleasant way and we laugh. A good joke-teller will always try to build up a situation in which one thing is expected until something unexpected suddenly happens, and so we laugh. (32)According to Aristotle, all jokes depend mainly on _.
