He taught public speaking, radio / TV / film, and acting. He was the coach of the Forensics Team and director of all the theater productions. It was in Cobbs classes that I discovered I had some talent (天 赋) for something I didnt know I had. Some of us were like his fans we took every class, did Forensics, joined the Radio Club, and did plays. I developed confidence (自信) in getting up in front of a large group of people. I was a very shy person, and Cobb helped me realize for the first time that I was good at this, and that I was a good writer. It really did change my life because I went from being shy to a more confident person. I went to high school in the late 1970s and it was very divided (分 离 的) socially. There were popular, attractive (有吸引力的) kids, and the rest of us. Everybody in that high school took Cobbs classes. One task was a music pantomime (哑剧) all the kids would come together and make good-natured fools of themselves. Some kids who were cool were really talented, but so were some of the unattractive kids. Without Cobb, that type of coming together really wouldnt have happened in my high school. Some of my high school friends and I still tell really funny stories about what happened in those classes. We learned a lot from Cobb the rules of discussion, who Stanislavsky was, how to make a short film, and really watch movies. Cobb was like the coach for the non-sporty kids, which made us feel important. He was a great man, and more than just a teacher. 24.What did the author discover by taking Cobbs classes? A. She was good at performing. B. She had a talent for making films. C. She would take up writing in the future. D. She preferred acting to public speaking. 25. What did the author use to be? A. She was sporty. B. She was lonely. C. She was out-going. D. She was unattractive. 26. What do we know about the music pantomime? A. It helped the author make more friends. B. It got the kids over their shyness. C. It helped bring the kids together. D. It made the author popular. 27. What would be the best title for the text? A. Dean Cobb, my best friend B. My happiest time at high school C. The teacher who changed my life D. The man who helped me succeed CBritish English may have come first, but around the world, the American way of spelling is now far more popular. A recent examination of the two kinds of English language shows that publications (出版物) now largely use the American version (版本), or spelling forms, changing words like “centre” for “center”after the 1880s. The charts (图表) shown on Steemit were made using Google Ngram Viewer, and show the usage trends (使用趋势) of many words between 1800 and 2000. In the charts, American spelling is shown in blue, and the British version is shown in red. Among many words, including “grey” and “flavour,”British English can be seen going down around 1880, when American English began to cross into wider use. Since then, English-language publications have preferred “gray” and “flavor.” And although there were some falls and rises in use over the years, the American versions of these words have remained more popular. The American way of spelling has continued to grow in usage over the years, with “liter ( 升)” passing “litre” around 1900, and “center” becoming the more common choice over “centre” in 1913. “1913 marked a turning point in the usage of the British spelling, as the American version became more frequently used in publications,” the report explains. This was just a year before the beginning of World War I (1914-1918). During World War I, the world also began to prefer“defense”over the British English version, “defence.”Around the same time, use of the spelling “airplane”increased quickly over“aeroplane.”At the time, the word “fiber” was also quickly becoming more popular than its British version. But, one word was unfamiliar to either the British or Americans “gaol.”This early form of “jail (监狱)”has lost its popularity over the past 200 years, and is now hardly used.“If there were ever a word that failed to cross the Atlantic and reach America, it must be“gaol,”the report says.“Ever since the middle of the 19th century it has been less popular as even Britain disliked the old spelling.” 28. What is the main purpose of the charts? A. To study how fast English develops. B. To compare British and American spelling. C. To show how World War I changed English. D. To explain new spelling forms in publications. 29. Which of the following words passed its British version first? A. Fiber. B. Liter. C. Center. D. Gray. 30. When did American spelling become more popular? A. Around the 1880s. B. After the year 2000. C. Around the time of World War I. D. At the end of the 20th century. 31. What do we learn about the word“gaol”? A. It has never been used by Americans. B. It may be popular again in the future. C. It became a popular word after the 1950s. D. It had nothing to do with the word“jail.” DSchool uniform (校服) may not be my favourite clothing, but if I were given the choice, I wouldnt throw it away. Wearing a uniform is an important part of being a school student. “Uniforms show that you belong to (属 于) an organisation. Wearing it says were all in this together,” Jason Wing, head teacher at the Neale-Wade Academy in Cambridgeshire, says. “Also, if you wear your uniform with pride, it means you are half way to being respectful, buying into what the organisation is all about.” A number of students think that uniforms are “childish”. But a school uniform teaches students to take pride in their appearance. Some people believe that a school uniform can help students pay attention to schoolwork. Maybe most importantly, a uniform means students dont have to worry about being laughed at by others when it comes to their clothes. And bullying (霸 凌) may not happen because its hard to make fun of what someone is wearing when youre dressed the same. In America, where most schools do not have a uniform, about 160, 000 children miss school every day because of fear of being bullied by other students. This might not be directly connected to what theyre wearing, but having a uniform can mean being safe for many students who might be bullied. Although wearing a school uniform is less expensive than buying many other clothes, uniforms can still be pricey. Many schools have a specific supplier (特 定 的 供 应 商), and wearing cheaper uniforms can result in punishment if the uniform isnt made by the supplier. Recently a meeting about the cost of school uniforms across England was held. The education minister David Laws said the practice of using one uniform supplier would end, enabling parents to shop around for uniforms. Changing the one-supplier condition could help families with the cost of school uniforms. Anyway, my uniform might not be what I would wear in my own time, but it gives me a sense of belonging. School uniform isnt fashionable, but thats exactly why I think it should stay. 32. What does Jason Wing think of wearing uniforms? A. It teaches students to dress smartly. B. It results in students being respected. C. It gives students a sense of belonging. D. It helps students pay full attention to study. 33. What did the author want to say by giving American schools as an example? A. Uniforms may lead to lower levels of bullying. B. American students dislike wearing uniforms. C. Uniforms are good for school management. D. Most students without uniforms are bullied. 34. What did the meeting in Paragraph 4 mainly centre on? A. The meanings of uniforms. B. The suppliers of uniforms. C. The types of uniforms. D. The cost of uniforms. 35. What is the authors attitude to wearing uniforms? A. He hates it. B. He supports it. C. He is unsure about it. D. He doesnt care about it. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I love going to water parks for fun. However, many people think that water parks are bad for the environment. 36 There isnt enough drinking water in many parts of the world, so people think water shouldnt be used just to have fun. Its true that thousands of liters of water are used every day at a single water park. 37 So that is a lot of water! Water park operators (经营者) understand that they need to protect water. 38 Using special filters (过 滤 器), water parks are able to clean and reuse most of the water. Some indoor water parks are able to recycle (回收) as much as 97% of the water they use. Outdoor water parks lose water because of the sun. Building in cool places will result in less water being lost. All water parks lose water when visitors splash (飞溅) it out of the pool. 39 Water parks attract millions of people each year, so they arent going away any time soon. If you think water is wasted at water parks, think about how much more water would be used if each visitor instead cooled off with their own pool! 40 A. They dont need much water every day. B. The problem is that the parks waste water. C. Water parks have grown in popularity recently. D. One way that has been developed is to recycle water. E.
