unit1 AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTBarry Minto (B) has just made a successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Listen to him being interviewed on the radio by Joan (J).JOAN: Barry, welcome to our programme and congratulations on that great climb! BARRY: Thank you. Its good to be here.JOAN: Now, Barry, it was a very special climb, wasnt it? BARRY: Yes, thats right. Half of the group had very bad eyesight or were blind like me, and the other half were sighted people who came along to help us.JOAN: How old were the climbers? BARRY: Well, the weak-sighted and blind group were between 16 and 19 years old.JOAN: And the sighted climbers?BARRY: Between 25 and 45.JOAN: I see. Now, why did you make such a difficult climb?BARRY: For two main reasons: one is to prove that we can achieve whatever we decide to do; the other is to raise money for other people with weak sight.JOAN: Mmm. Well done! I know Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. But how high is it?BARRY: About 5,900 metres.JOAN: Thats very high! So how many of you reach the top?BARRY: Of the 12 poor-sighted and blind climbers, 9 made it to the top. Of the 15sighted climbers, 7 did.JOAN: Well done!BARRY: Yes, it just shows you how determined the poor-sighted and blind climbers were.JOAN: How long did it take you?BARRY: Five days to go up and two to come down.JOAN: Well, Barry, Im full of admiration for you and your companions. What do you plan to do next?BARRY: Oh, Im going to university next year, but my next climbing ambition is to go up Mount Qomolangma one day.JOAN: Amazing. I wish you every success in the future, Barry.BARRY: (fade out) Thanks, Joan unit2 SATISFACTION GUARANTEEDListen to Molly (M) and Kate (K) discussing the story “Satisfaction Guaranteed”.M: Dont you think that was a great love story, Kate?K: No, not really.M: You didnt? Well, I loved it. There was so much emotion between Tony and Claire.K: Molly, thats rubbish. Tony was just a machine. Yes, Claire fell in love with him, but I dont believe robots can feel emotion of any kind. Thats the difference between them and us.M: Well, I disagree. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her that he didnt want to leave her the next day, and that he felt more than just the wish to please her? Then he kissed her.K: Yes, Molly, that was just part of Tonys role. They made him so he wouldnt allow a human being to be hurt.He could see that Claire was hurting herself by her lack of confidence. So he tried to make her feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion that was just how he was made.M: Yes Kate, but he did hurt Claire.K: How?M: He was so kind to her that she fell in love with him. So it must have hurt her when he was taken away.K: True, true. I guess thats why the company had to rebuild himer the machine I mean!M: Yes, such a shame really. Id like a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only purpose in life is to please you!K: Actually, I suppose that was the companys greatest mistake.M: Er?K: They made the robot look so much like a real man, so it was bound to cause trouble!M: Yes, youre right.unit3 LISTENING TEXTCOMPLAINING ABOUT A WHALE WATCHING TOURANGELA: Im sorry but we werent very happy with the tour.TOUR GUIDE: Oh, what was the problem?ANGELA: Well, it was so wet we couldnt go outside I know we heard the whales and saw them on the video camera and that was great, but we really wanted to stand outside and watch the whales from there.
