Over a series of 14 tweets in his Tweeter posted last Monday, the worlds richest man used the words “impact”, “happiness” and “progress”. He did not mention money. Instead, he told the graduates what jobs he would be looking for if he started out today. “AI (artificial intelligence), energy and bio-sciences are promising fields where you can make a huge influence”, he wrote. Earlier this year, Gates-who famously dropped out of Harvard to found Microsoft-said that artificial intelligence had “ phenomenal” potential, and “anything connected with that would be an exciting lifetime career.” In the same speech at Columbia University, he said there is a huge growing demand in the energy field to develop reliable, cheap and clean energy. As well as urging new graduates to surround themselves with people who challenge you, teach you, and push you to be your best self, Gates reminded them to think of others, especially the less fortunate. He wrote that it had taken him decades to learn about the worlds worst unfairness and described this lack of early understanding as his one big regret. “You know more than I did when I was your age,” he wrote, “ You can start fighting unfairness, whether down the street or around the world sooner.” He finished by asking graduates to consider the progress human has already made, saying that he believe the world is getting better. “ That matters because if you think the world is getting better, you want to spread the progress to more people and places.” 24. He also suffered from frostbite. He stood alone with his white hair and eyebrows while other classmates behind were clearly amused and laughing. The picture drew widespread attention around the whole world. Many netizens were sympathetic to the boys difficulties, with many Mircoblog users giving ments under the report. Just after the report, a donation of 100,000 yuan was sent to his Primary School. Constantly, help still pours in for the Chinese boy. But the local authorities call on others to pay attention to other similar rural areas and give them timely aid. D D Dreams can be familiar and strange, fantastical or boring, but some dreams might be connected to the mental processes that help us learn. In a recent study, scientists found a connection between nap time dreams and better memory in people who were learning a new skill. In the study, 99 college students between the ages of 18 and 30 each spent an hour on a puter, trying to get through a virtual maze (逃宫). The maze was difficult, and the study participants had to start in a different place each time they tried, making it even more difficult. They were also told to find a particular picture of a tree and remember where it was. For the first 90 minutes of a five - hour break, half of the participants stayed awake and half were told to take a short nap. Participants who stayed awake were asked to describe their thoughts. Participants who took a nap were asked about their dreams after sleep and they were awakened within a minute of sleep to describe their dreams. Stickgold, a neuroscientist, wanted to know what people were dreaming about when their eyes werent moving during sleep.Four of the 50 people who slept said their dreams were connected to the maze. Some dreamed about the music that had been playing when they were working; others said they dreamed about seeing people in the maze. When these four people tried the puter maze again, they were able to find the tree faster than before their naps. Stickgold suggests the dream itself doesnt help a person learn, its the other way around. He suspects that the dream was caused by the brain processes associated with learning. All four of the people who dreamed about the task had done poorly the first time, which makes Stickgold wonder if the dreams show up when a person finds a new task particularly difficult. People who had other dreams, or people who didnt take a nap, didnt show the same improvement. 32. What were the participants of the experiment asked to do before having a short nap? A. To stay in adifferent place in the maze. B. To design a plex virtual maze to get through. C. To experience the experiment and try to remember something. D. To get through a virtual maze on a puter from the same place. 33. What can we learn from the text? A. Participants who took a nap were required to express their thoughts. B. Participants who dreamed about films could finish the task more easily. C. Participants whose dreams linked with the maze could find the tree faster. D. Participants who dream may encourage themselves to invent something new. 34. What can we infer from Stickgold? A. every person may dream about what they learned. B. peoples brain processes may be connected with their learning in dreams. C. once peoples eyes stop moving, they are sure to dream about something. D. no matter how fantastical or boring, dreams are connected with peoples life. 35. What is the best title for this text? A. Dreaming Makes Sense B.Not All Dreams Are True C.Dreams Are StrangeD. Would someone tend to believe the look on your face or the way you behave? Recently, scientists have dealt with these questions. They found that when a person is staring at your face, he might not believe what he sees if your body doesnt match the feeling that your face shows. 37 Previous study had showed that the tone of a persons voice can be more important than the words spoken. For example, most people are more likely not to believe a person who says in a flat voice, “Im so excited.” When talking about emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists suspected that the face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated faces and isolated bodies that showed anger or fear. 38 An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A frightened face had high eyebrow and a slightly open mouth. 39 A scared body had arms forward and shoulders square, as if ready to fight back. These results told the researchers that mixed messages can confuse people. Even when people pay attention to the face, body language surely influences the emotion they read. 40 And if you want to be understood it helps to avoid sending mixed messages. A. Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists. B. So, your body language is important for telling people your feelings. C. Scientists feel new to study the mixed message that puzzles people. D. An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle, as if ready to fight. E. Body language can sometimes be misunderstood in different culture backgrounds. F. They also showed pictures where angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies. G.
