The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that mens hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of aging on the heart has found that womens longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the aging process.”What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old womans heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old ones.“This gender(性别) difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why aging takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles being smaller and weaker as they age.21. In the Kaiser Poll, 38% say its the top concern, down from 44% in a 1996 poll; in the Gallup Poll, 29% say AIDS is No.1, down from 41% in 1992 and 67% in 1987.Other findings from Kaiser, which polled more than 1,200 adults in September and October and asked additional questions of another 1,000 adults in November:52% say the country is making progress against AIDS, up from 32% in 1995.51% say the government spends too little on AIDS. 86% correctly say AIDS drugs can now lengthen lives; an equal number correctly say that the drugs are not cures.67% incorrectly say that AIDS deaths increased or stayed the same in the past year; 24% know deaths fell. Daniel Zingale, director of AIDS Action Council, says, Im encouraged that the American people are getting the message that the AIDS epidemic isnt over. I hope the decision-makers in Washington are getting the same message We have seen signs of placency.28. What do activists worry about? A. Recent news about AIDS is not true. B. But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, a false idea created by panies and advertisers hoping to sell their products. The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in peoples life. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors. It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products e on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is puters, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing: no choice, no anxiety.32. What does the author try to argue in Paragraph 1?A. The exercise of rights is a luxury. B. The practice of choice is difficult.C. The right of choice is given but at a price. D. Choice and right exist at the same time.33. Why do more choices of goods give rise to anxiety? A. Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product. B. People are likely to find themselves overe by business persuasion. C. Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items. D. panies and advertisers are often misleading about the range of choice.34. By using puters as an example, the author wants to prove _.A. advanced products meet the needs of people B. products of the latest design flood the market C. petitions are fierce in high-tech industry D. everyday goods need to be replaced often 35. What is the passage mainly about?A. The variety of choices in modern society. B. The opinions on peoples right in different countries.C. The problem about the availability of everyday goods.D. The helplessness in purchasing decisions.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 其中有两项为多余选项。第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。 How to Improve Vocabulary Fast Your vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. We should learn some ways to expand it. Read every day. 36 . Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know. 37 . If you do not meet with an unfamiliar word in your daily reading, use your dictionary to search for one. Learn the correct definition and pronunciation for each new word. Pronunciation is as important as definition because in order to add a word to your active vocabulary, you must be able to use it in speech. Elaborate(详尽阐述)on the meaning of the word. If you have just learned that the word “stubborn” , think about the neighbor who will not lend you his car. 38 Use your new word in speech and in writing. E-mail your sister about how your cat is stubborn about sleeping on your pillow. 39 But the more you use it, the more fluent you will bee in its use. Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary. Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary. Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is. 40 . The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it. A. Find a new word every day. B. The vocabulary can be increased. C. Your vocabulary contains the words you understand. D. The more often you read, the faster your vocabulary can grow. E. Or let them ask for the definition of a new word you have used. F. Imagine him shaking his head, and think of him as “stubborn in his refusal”. G.
