There are more boys than girls in the class and most of the students are outgoing and active. l There are 40 students in the class and they are equally divided into 10 groups.l The topic is about sports, which is close to our daily life. Students are familiar with the subject.l It is the first time for them to learn linking words in a systematical and organized way. l Students have learned about some simple, easy expressions about sports but havent mastered some high-class vocabulary about this subject.Teaching materiall Before writing, students have learned the text “The story of Atlanta” in the previous lesson, which is concerned with the sport “running” and the Olympic Games. This text helps students know more about the subject. l Besides, the writing task has provided some instructions for students to think about: how did you become interested in that sport? who is your favourite athlete? what do you do to improve your skill? Students are able to divert their thinking with the guidance.Teaching objectivesAfter this writing class, students are able to:1. Write a short passage about their favorite sports from three aspects, i.e. the name of the sport, the reasons for choosing this sport and the future plan for this favorite sport;2. Master the use of two kinds of linking words, i.e. sequential linking words and progressive linking words;3. In the part of talking about reasons, replace some ordinary expressions into high-class expressions;The teaching focusl In the part of talking about reasons, reinterpret students expressions into high-class expressions by orally repeating students answers with target expressions teachers have expected;l Explain two kinds of linking words with a sample writing;The teaching difficultyl Guide the students to brain-storm the reasons for choosing a specific sport with high-class expressions;l Enable the students to use the two kinds of linking words into their passage properly; Teaching proceduresWarming-upStep 17 min1. Goals: l Students are able to have a better understanding of the topic by showing them a video about the sports. l By discussing various reasons why students like their favorite sports, students are able to get familiar with the sports and know more about the positives and benefits of the sports, which provides the contents for writing. l Students will know more about some high-class expressions to replace the simple ones.2. Teaching activities: Teachers activitiesl First, the teacher shows a video about the sports to lead in the topic. And at the same time, ask students to prepare the answers for the question: what is your favorite sport and why do you like it? l Ask students to work in groups to brain storm the sports they like and the reasons why they like them. After the discussion, the teacher ask the students to give their own answers. l The teacher help correct and provide more answers with high-class expressions by orally speaking and might write on the blackboard if necessary.Students activitiesl Watch a video about the sports and think about the question raised by the teacher.l Work in groups: students of 4 people work in a group and brain storm the sports they like and the reasons why they like them. Goal: l By analyzing a writing sample of “My favorite Sport”, students are able to pay specific attention to the 5 paragraphs structure of this writing task.l By analyzing a writing sample of “My favorite Sport”, students are able to know how to properly use linking words that indicate sequence and progress.2. Teaching activities: Teachers activitiesl The teacher shows a his/her writing as a sample on the screen, and help the students to summarize the structure of the passage and to highlight the linking words.l Teachers summarize the 5 paragraph structure of the passage and the use of linking words.Students activitiesl Through the sample provided by the teacher, analyse the structure and the linking words with the teacher.Sample Swimming is my favorite sport. Every afternoon after school, I go to the swimming pool and swim for an hour. I began swimming when I was five years old. From then on, I have been obsessed with this wonderful sport. First of all, the reason why I like swimming so much is that it can bring me much fun. When I get upset, I will go to swim because it makes me feel less worried when I swim to and fro in the pool. Whats more, the process of learning how to swim is very interesting. At the beginning level, I learned some basic moves, but when you make progress, you can try other difficult ways of swimming, such as backstroke, which makes me feel much relieved after trying out different types of swimming modes. Secondly, you can swim at any time of the year if you like. In hot summer, if you jump into the river or the sea to have a swim, you will feel cool and comfortable. Even in cold winter, you can swim if you are brave enough. In addition, its a healthy sport and it can build up our body. Thirdly, I admire my favorite swimmer Davis who is so skillful at swimming and wins a lot of prizes in the swimming competitions. I am a big fan of Davis and when he appears on the television, I will become very glad and crazy. Also, I hope one day, I can become as great as a swimmer like Davis. Last but not least, if you want to be a good swimmer, you must have a lot of practice and have great determination. Well goes the old saying: practice makes perfect. I practice every day before dinner time in order to improve my swimming skills. Sometimes, I compete against my friends and we are very happy to help each other make progress.
