Well, Let me tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.In China, I had English classes five times a week since the fifth grade. However I didnt know textbook English was very different from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut. When I first studied English, I was told to say,“I am fine” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say,” I am good” or “I am tired.”One day, someone greeted me with “Whats up?” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didnt know what to say.Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and the US cultures. To my surprise, the US girls spend a lot of time in burning sun getting a tan (晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler(白的).I am also surprised by how hardworking the US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard all the time. But here, an “excellent” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music .The kids here are so talented, and I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.21. How often did the writer have an English class in Grade Five?A. Seven times a week. B. Six times a week Five times a week. C. Five times a week. D. Four times a week.22. Which of following is NOT true? A. The writer is now in the US B. The writer regrets giving up playing the piano. C. The US students are talented and hard working.D. American girls love to have white skin23. Which is the best title for the passage? A. My own Travel in the US. B. My study in the US. C. My friends in the US. D. My skin in the US. BWould it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees municate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more plex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are peting for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition depending on who needs it.Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌)networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.Simard talks about mother trees, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down mother trees with no awareness of these highly plex tree societies or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest. We didnt take any notice of it Simard says sadly. Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance. If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.24. The underlined sentence the opposite is true in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees . A. pete for survivalB. protect their own wealthC. depend on each otherD. provide support for dying trees25. Mother trees are extremely important because they .A. look the largest in size in the forestB. pass on nutrition to young treesC. seem more likely to be cut down by humansD. know more about the plex tree societies26. The underlined word it in the last paragraph refers to .A. how tree societies workB. how trees grow oldC. how forestry industry developsD. how young trees survive27. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Old Trees municate Like HumansB. Young Trees Are In Need Of ProtectionC. Trees Are More Awesome Than You ThinkD. Trees Contribute To Our Society CSome of the worlds most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures. Despite the celebrations, though, in the U. S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations. Its Jason Morans job to help change that. As the Kennedy Centers artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture. “Jazz seems like its not really a part of the American appetite, ” Moran tells National Public Radios reporter Neal Conan. “What Im hoping to acplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and white anymore. Its actually color, and its actually digital. ”Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music cant be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same, ” says Moran. Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Wallers music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music, ” says Moran. “For me, its the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context, ” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster. ”28Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?ATo remember the birth of jazz. BTo protect cultural diversity. CTo encourage people to study music. DTo recognize the value of jazz. 29What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?AJazz being more accessible. BThe production of jazz growing faster. CJazz being less popular with the young. DThe jazz audience being larger. 30What can we infer about Morans opinion on jazz?AIt will disappear gradually. BIt remains black and white. CIt should keep up with the times. DIt changes every 50 years. 31Which of the following can be the best title for the text?AExploring the Future of Jazz. BThe Rise and Fall of Jazz. CThe Story of a Jazz Musician. DCelebrating the Jazz Day. DA build-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U. S. Department of Agriculture, its an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since its all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only ponents required, though, are a 5 5 sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container perhaps just a drinking cup to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt. To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catchers productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up and out the side of the hole. Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheets center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup. The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and wont have to break down the still every time you need a drink. 32. What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?A. Its delicate. B. Its expensive. C. Its plex. D. Its portable. 33. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. The tube. B. The still. C. The hole. D. The cup. 34. Whats the last step of constructing a working solar still?A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place. C. Weight the sheets center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet. 35. When a solar still works, drops of water e into the cup from . I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and unfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in mon with me. 36 . The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctors bill for my sons food poisoning.
