Meaning of the cartoon: The cartoon depends on the readers understanding of several different meanings of the word star : stars in the sky,star as the name of a ferry ,and stars as famous people such as movie stars. The idea here is that our robot character Lo thinks he is a famous star, and therefore he feels he should go on the Star Ferry.About the ferry1 Ask the students to match the pictures with their proper names first.2 Ask students the following questions.a)Have you ever been on a ferry ?b)Why were you on a ferry ?c)How long does it take for a ferry to cross the river ?About the policeman1. Ask the students to match the pictures with their proper names first.2 Questions: a) What number do you dial to call the police ?b) What number do you dial to call the fireman ?c) What number do you dial to call the doctor ?3.Ask students if any of them keep a diary. If so , ask them if they would like to say anything about them.Questions: a)What do you write about ?b)How much do you write ?c)How often do you write ?4.Point out the difference in meaning, pronunciation and spelling between diary and dairy5.Read the title and the subtitle on the next page. Paul cant understand why.P8-9: His father quickly phones the police with all the details.P10-11: The police meet the ferry when it arrives and catch the man. Tell students we can use the simple past tense to talk about things that happened in the past. eg. He reported the robbery.2. Write some regular verbs and sentences on the board and tell students all the verbs in the sentences below are in the simple past tense.Ask them how to form past tense verbs. visit I visited Hongkong last summer. invent Wibur and Orville Wright invented the aeroplane in 1896. finish He finished all his work one hour ago.3. Explain that regular verbs add ed or d to base form to make the past tense form. Point out that the simple past tense is the same for all persons.Change the base form into the past tense form: look / add / call / play / fail / remember Practise saying three different ways of pronouncing the past tense forms of verbs./t/ /d/ /id/crossed agreed endedhelped apologized scoldedlaughed carried recordedpressed turned liftedswitched used visited4. Adding ed/-d to some verbs causes spelling changes.We only add d to verbs that end in e, eg. noticed, stared, moved, named.We change the y to I and add ed to some of the verbs that end in y, eg. carried, hurried. Note: the verbs play and enjoy although ending in y, do not obey the ruleSome verbs double their final consonants when ed is added, eg. dailled, stopped.Many verbs are irregular in form. We do not add ed to them. Irregular verbs have to be learnt by heart. We can divide them into four different kinds. Replies must use verbs in brackets.How old was Mary ten years ago?How tall was she and how much did she weigh ten years ago?What kind of hair did she have ten yer ago?Did she wear glasses ten years ago? As answers are given, write them on the board to make a paragraph about Mary ten years ago. Then ask students to give a paragraph about Mary now. Ten years ago, Mary was three years old. She was 0.9 metres tall and weighted 13 kilos. She had short hair and she did not wear glasses. Now Mary was 14 years old. She was1.5 metres tall and weighted 41 kilos. She has long hair. She wears glasses.6. Work in pairs. S1 asks questions about the pictures in A2 and S2 responds. Say the verb endings correctly. Remember to make your voice rise at the end of the questions and fall at the end of the answers. Then do the exercise A1 on page 38.7. we often use the simple past tense with adverbial expressions referring to past time. eg. ago, yesterday, last, just now, the day before, in 1990.Complete Pauls thoughts by using the correct period of time on page 39 B1.Work in pairs on page 40 B28. Now begin a new activity. Ask students to tell a chain story orally, i.e. a story to which each student in turn adds a sentence. The story must be about the past. Remind them that they will need to use dictionaries if they cannot guess the meanings of words from their contexts.Ask: What do you do if you cant guess the meanings of words from their contexts?
