lastweekiwenttopekinguniversityandtsinghuauniversitywhereiwasinvitedtodeliverlectureson“learningenglishwithpassion”.ifoundoutthatallthosestudentshavesomethinginmon;theyallhavedeterminationstolearnenglishwell.thatstheveryreasonwhyigavelecturesatmorethantenmostprestigiousuniversitieswithanattempttohelpstudentswhowanttoconquerenglishwithintheshortesttime.thatstrue,havingagoodmandofenglishisvitallysignificantandprofound.hereiwouldliketogiveallmyfriendsandstudentssomeadviceforthefuturelearningintermsoftheexperienceigotfrombeingateacherformanylanguagetrainingschoolsandbeinginterpreterforgovernmentaswellasembassies.beinganinterpreterisbynomeanseasy,whichneedstohaveagoodmandoflistening,understandingordecodingandspeaking.assoonasiheartheoriginalvoicefromthespeaker,meanwhile,iwilldecodeorunderstanditbydividingthecontentofthevoiceintodifferentsegments,andusemyshort-termmemoryandifpossible,note-taking,todelivertheinterpretationintheprocessofconsecutiveorsimultaneouscases.now,iwouldliketotellyouhowtospeakgoodenglish.3-dmethods(dialogue,discussionanddebate)toimproveyoureloquencedialoguehavingauthenticandpolishedoralenglishiseverylearnersdream,however,manyofmystudentswhospentalotofyears,moneyandeffortstospeakthislanguagewellbutfailedtobeabletomunicateandspeakout,thereasontowhichmightbemainlyconfidenceandmethods.inoticethatmanystudentsdowellinspeakingwhenconductingapreparedspeechorpresentationinclass.butspeakingenglishfluentlyisnotjustaboutmakingpresentationsandgivingspeeches.itisaboutexpressingyourideasandinsightonthemostmundaneofthingsaroundyou.istillrememberwhenifirstlandedonthesoilofbeijing5yearsago;icouldnotmunicatewithmyfriendsandevenfeltuneasywhengoingoutwiththembecauseididnothavetheconfidencetostartaconversationwithmymandarin.itsthesametotheenglishlearnerswhohavenocouragetostartatopicandfaceanawkwardsilenceaftertheinitialgreetingwasgivenbecausetheydontknowwhattotalkaboutandarenotconfidentofputtingsomethingacrosscorrectly,thustheconversationestoend.theabilitytomakedialoguesisveryimportantinsocialmunication.topicsforcasualconversationcouldincludetheweather,education,music,currentaffairs;hobbies,travel,etc.donotalwaysaskforeigner“whatisyournameandhowisyourjob”whenyouwanttofindonetopracticeyourenglishwith.beforegoingtoenglishcorner,pleasereaduponyourareaofinterestandtryframingsentencesexpressingyouropinions.talkaboutitwithsomeoneclosetoyouorsomeonesenglishlevelishigherthanyours,soyoucancheckforyourlanguageaccuracyandfluency.youdbettertograspregularlyusedwaysofsmalltalk,andyouwillbeabletoinitiatespeakingmoreconfidently.ifyoucanbreakthisbarrierandspeakoutwithpassionandconfidence,youcantakeyourfirststepintotherealmofenglishspeakingandbeeapublicspeakerinthefuture.discussionanddebateialwaysenlightenmystudentsthatyourlanguageabilityandacademicachievementsareveryimperativeandimportant,butthemostimportantofall,itsyoureloquencetomunicateinthepersonalrelationships.elitemaynothaveeloquence,butaneloquentpersonmustbeanelite.sothebestwaytodrillyourspeakingabilitiesistodiscussanddebate.wheniwasajunior,ialwaysraiseddiscussionswithmyclassmateinmydorm,questionslike“environmentalprotection,cohabitation,20xxolympics,postgraduateexamsandsoon.aftereveryoneairedhisopinions,thenweconducteddebatetoargue,toexpressideastoconvincetheother.andigraduallybuilduponmyownrepertoireofconversationaltopicsandstartusingthemwheneverigetachance;subsequentlyihavegoodmandofenglish,andwonalotofawardsinenglishspeechcontestanddebate.hence,itsalsoeffectiveforyou,mybelovedfriendsorstudents,tohaveatrytouseyourlanguagetodiscussanddebate.othermethodsmanystudentsdowanttoimprovetheirenglishbyallmeans.itsself-evidentthatallofusliketakingdownnoteswhenwearelisteningtothelecturesgivenbyteachersatschool.butitsnotacorrectwaytospeakgoodlanguage.canyoulearnswimmingbystandingattheedgeofthepoolandtakingdownthewordsspokenbythecoach?youhavetotaketheplunge,right?iseldomtooknoteswheniwasgivenlessons,butiwouldmemorizethemwithmymouth,mymindandmyears.thereisjustonecaseiwilltakenoteswheniamdoingmyjobasaninterpreterforthebeijingmunicipalgovernmentandembassy.istillrememberwheniwasinterpretingfortheambassadorfromthephilippines,atwhichmomentshewasdeliveringthespeechabout10minutesatthegreatwallinternationalconference.hadntitakenthenoticefromthespeaker,idontthinkiwouldhaveinterpretedforherandwontheapplausefromtheofficials.itisthesamewithlanguage.unlessyouusethelanguageeveryday,youwillneverknowhowgoodyouareatit.askyourfriendswhoaregoodatenglishtohelp.trytospeakitasmuchaspossible,andlettheminterruptyouwheneveryoumakemistakesandaskthemtocorrectyou.donotfeelembarrassedtomakemistakes,forthatistheonlywayyouwilllearn.enjoylosingfaceandenjoymakingmistakesbecausethatisthewayhowtheprocessofacquiringfluencyalanguageoccurs.everyonemayhavemadealotofmistakesbeforegettingagoodgraspofmothertongue.theonlydifferencenowisthatyouareconsciousofthemistakes.so,donotbeafraidofmakingmistakes.attitudethatcountsthemostifyoudowanttolearnsomethingwell,youaresupposedtohaveconfidenceandpassion.iloveplayingpiano,basketballan
