Class hour 1 (45 mins)1) A brief introduction to the teacher 5 mins 2) Dos and Donts in the class 20 mins 3) A brief introduction to Extensive Reading and the requirement 20 mins2. Class hour 2 (45 mins): 1) Study on one of the reading skills used in extensive reading: skimming 15 minsTeaching Method: Students have 5 minutes to read through the passage about a reading skillskimming, and when reading, they should underline some important sentences which are useful for them to understand how to use skimming efficiently. After reading, the teacher asks several students to tell us what sentences have been underlined, and use their own words to summarize how to skim. Skimming is reading for the general idea. While skimming, a reader reads the text very quickly to find the main ideas or important facts. The attention should be focused on a general overview, and look for only the topic, the main idea, or the main points. Skimmers usually read selectively. Six steps are proposed as regard to how to skim: a. read the title; b. note the authors name and the source of the text; c. read the first paragraph completely; d. read subheadings and first sentences of the remaining paragraphs; e. look for the main ideas and important supporting details, clue words, direction words, and attention-getting markings; f. read the last paragraph completely. Teaching Purpose: Students know how to use skimming efficiently. 2) Warm-up activities for the first lesson of the new term 5 minsTeaching Method: Ask the students to think about the question for warm-up activities: a. How can we strike a balance between reading speed and reading comprehension? b. What skills can we use to improve our reading ability? What are your successful and failing experiences in reading comprehension? Teaching Purpose: Make sure the students are clear about the teaching expectations of this step keeping the balance between reading speed and reading comprehension.3) Word Pretest and discussion of the words in this part 15 minsTeaching Method: Tell students to finish Word Pretest within 5 minutes. Check the answers and provide explanation. The words for study in this part are as follows: figure out: count the total number plod along: work slowly or make sloe progress, especially in a way that is boring eyestrain: pain in the eyes cling to: remain emotionally attached; hold on alert: vigilantly attentive; watchful notion: idea or belief; concept; understanding potential: the inherent ability or capacity for growth, development, or coming into being savor: appreciate fully; enjoy or relish clinics: workshops objective: aim,target, goal Teaching Purpose: Make sure students have mastered the meanings and usages of the words and phrases. 4) Reading of the text in Section A and accomplishment of the reading comprehension exercises. 10 mins Teaching Method: The students are asked to finish reading Text I in Section A and record their reading time. Remind them to use the new-learnt reading skill skimming to finish their reading comprehension. Teaching Purpose: the students should learn to use the new-learnt reading skill skimming purposefully.3. Class hour 3 (45 mins): 1) Checking of the reading comprehension exercises for the text in Section A 5 minsTeaching Method: Discuss with the students their understanding of the text and check whether they have done the reading exercises correctly. 2) Analysis of Text I in section A and study of the main idea as well as key words and expressions in the text 20 minsTeaching Method: Analyze Text I in Section A and discuss with the students the main idea and the structure of the text. Explain the key words and expressions in the text so that the students can have a better understanding of the text. The structure of the text: Introduction arguments (criticizing/supporting wrong/right ideas) conclusion Part 1 (Para. 1-3): The reasons why we should read fasterto save time. Part2 (Para. 4-9): The ways to read faster and the false understandings about reading fast. Part 3 (Para. 10-13): Encourages us to read faster and take good advantage of the time saved. The key words and useful expressions are as following: a. key words for study: practical (Para. 1), compute (2), bright (6), intelligence (6), absorb (6), vary (7), medium (7), triple (9) , speed (13). b. useful expressions: it isthat (Para. 3), train of thought (3), doze off (2) , as much as (8), depend upon (9), lose sight of (10), at will (10).
