摘要 英语存现句是一个具有特殊属性的结构，其句法特征主要表现 为：由一个虚主语( e x p l e t i v e ) t h e r e 作为句法主语，谓语则通常由一 个表示存在、出现或消失的非宾格动词充当，谓语后面跟一个表示 非确指意义的名词短语( i n d e f i n i t en p ) ，名词短语后一般会有一个表 示方位的介词短语或副词( 方位短语) 。在有关英语存现句的句法研 究中，讨论的焦点主要集中在以下几个问题上：虚主语t h e r e 是否具 有格特征，它与存现句中的方位短语( l p ) 是否有某种联系；动词后 名词短语( p o s t v e r b a ls p ) 的格位指派问题( c a s ea s s i g n m e n t ) 和定指 效应( d e f i n i t e n e s se f f e c t ) 问题；以及存现句的生成过程。 针对此结构涉及的问题，语言学家从不同的角度提出了不同的 假设。c h o m s k y ( 1 9 8 1 ，1 9 8 6 ) 提出格传递说( c a s et r a n s m i s s i o n t h e o r y ) ，认为虚主语t h e r e 与动词后的名词短语构成一个语链 ( c h a i n ) ，后者被称为附属主语( a s s o y ( 1 9 9 5 ) 提出逻辑式词缀说 ( l fa 师xt h e o r y ) 用以支持格传递说，他把t h e r e 看作是逻辑式上的 一个词缀。在逻辑式上，t h e r e 和附属主语以附力h ( a d j o i n ) 的形式结合 在一起。h a z o u t ( 2 0 0 4 b ) 提出另外一个解决方案。他假定t h e r e 与动 词后的名词短语构成一个小句，名词短语充当该结构的逻辑谓语， 缺少格特征，因此不需要为消除这种特征进行格特征核查，而句首 的t h e r e 原本为小旬的主语，在格特征的驱动下经句法提升成为存现 句的语法主语。然而，这些方案都没能圆满解释英语存现旬的问题。 因此，本文试图对英语存现句的相关问题提出自己的看法，并在最 简方案框架下为英语存现句提供一个统一的生成模式，以便对英语 存现句有一个更加全面的了解。 本文首先对英语存现句进行了界定，认为方位短语不管其以显 性还是隐性的形式出现都是存现句中不可或缺的成分。通过对文献 中讨论过的存现句句型进行分类，我们把英语存现句划分为一个标 准类型和四个变体。标准类型为：t h e r e + b e + i n d e f i n i t en p + l p ； 四个变体分别为：t h e r e + u n a e c u s a t i v ev e r b s + i n d e f i n i t en p + l p ； t h e r e + b e u n a c c u s a t i v ev e r b s + i n d e f i n i t en p + ( l p ) ；l p + b e a j n a c c u s a t i v ev e r b s + i n d e f i n i t eb i p ：t h e r e + b e + 【i n d e f i n i t en p + m o d i f i e r n p 。 接下来通过论证，本文认为文献中对于t h e r e 无格特征的假设难 以令人信服。作为一个形式特征不完全( 一i n c o m p l e t e ) 的成分，t h e r e 虽然不具备数特征，但是有人称和格特征。其经验方面的证据来自 于t h e r e 可以在特殊授格结构和不定式复合结构中出现。另外通过考 察t h e r e 与存现句中方位短语的关系，我们发现二者之间存在密切的 联系。在一些学者研究的基础上，本文提出方位短语作为t h e r e 的附 属主语存在，二者的关系类似于虚主语髓和主语从句c p 的关系， 并且迸一步假设在生成过程中存现句中的方位短语经历了与c p 类 似的操作，即外置( e x t r a p o s i t i o n ) 。 同时，基于c o l l i n s ( 2 0 0 5 ) 提出的左向移动假说，本文认为这种 外置操作是一种左向移动：英语存现句中的方位短语( l p ) 经过外置 操作移至功能短语g o ) 的标志语位置( s p e e i f i e o ：而虚主语t h e r e 在格 特征的驱动下从轻动词( v ) 的标志语位置移至p 的标志语位置。通过 对存现句中施动词的分析，我们也进二步证明了b e l l e t t i 提出的部 分格指派假说是可行的，这样动词后名词短语的格位问题即得到了 解决。 本文提出的英语存现句的生成模式虽然是以标准类型为基础， 但是对英语存现旬的四种变体具有相同的解释力。针对文献中不同 的观点，我们重点讨论了标准类型与第三个变体之间的关系，认为 二者源自同一个深层结构。前者由后者中的方位短语发生外置，再 通过t h
