从知识进化论的角度探索不可译性 中文摘要 人类翻译历史一开始就遭遇了不可译现象，从而从那时起翻译中的可 译不可译悖论就存在并延续至今。不同时期的翻译人员就不断展开关于可 译与不可译的争论。这恰恰就反映了人类对翻译过程中对于可译不可译悖 论的认识的加深的实践过程。在宏观的人类历史中，不断地涌现出优秀的 翻译作品，不同程度地体现了人类在翻译过程中，为把不可译性转化为可 译性而付出的努力。同时，人类对不可译现象的认识也从表面走向深入， 从静止观点走向动态观点。 作为对翻译理论界就可译不可译悖论研究的一部分，本文尝试从理论 上借鉴二十世纪著名哲学家波普尔提出的知识进化论的观点，来探讨对英 汉两种语言之间翻译过程中出现的不可译现象。传统的归纳主义的科学发 展理论认为科学理论的发展遵循的是一种静态的模式，科学的发展是平稳 的积累而成的。这种观点直到二十世纪五十年代仍广为流行。而波普尔却 不赞同这种理论，他认为知识进化的过程是一种对于旧的观点证伪，同时 又发现新问题，引出新研究的过程。新问题的出现推动了知识进化的客观 过程，属于动态的发展。从而波普尔用知识进化论来概括这种动态的发展 过程。翻译理论研究在当今被广泛地认为是一种科学理论。因此翻译理论 研究本身的进步就属于知识的发现和进化的过程。它与一般科学一样，普 遍存在着知识的动态发展特点。特别足在不可译性的研究探索方而，更是 一i 吲翻译人员在不断地摸索，批判前人不足，发现新问题，促进研究发 展的过程。在这一方面，首先人们提 | j 这样的一个问题：“不同语言之问的 翻译是否可行? ”在肯定与否定意见反复论战中翻译理论家提出种种方法 来回答是否可行的问题。同时有一些假设在这一过程中被批判和证伪。直 到当代，不同的语言之间的翻译可译性才被普遍的接受。但又有新的问题 接踵而来：那就是，“如何在翻译过程中做到把不可译的成分最大限度的译 成目的语，从而取得最大限度的可译性效果。”这一问题的出现引起了广大 翻译者的关注，同时也证明了不可译性问题的研究符合波普尔提出的知识 进化论的观点。 本文从知识进化论的角度来观察、分析英汉翻译中不可译性产生、发 的翻译实践的经验所证明。但是英汉语言之间不可译性的研究并非如人们所想象的那样： 是一种对历史上的经验不断归纳、静态的积累过程。二十世纪英国哲学家卡尔波普尔 提出的证伪理论和知识进化论使笔者认识到不可译性的研究的发展过程应该是经历反 复讨论，接受证伪而循环发展的知识进化过程。本文通过波普尔提出的证伪理论和知识 进化论来解释翻译研究中，对英汉语言之问可译不可译悖论的认识过程找出不可译性现 象发展的规律。从而不断提高可译性限度，减低不可译性，促进文化交流。 第二章 关于翻译中的可译不可译的悖论问题很早就引起人们的关注，因此本章首先，回顾 翻译理论研究历史上对可译不可译的悖论的诸家观点，分析各种造成不可译性的原因 ( 一般认为存在两种因素，即语言差别的因素和文化差别的因素) 。在此基础上，作者 通过进一步对翻译研究历史上的有关翻译的定义进行收集整理，并归纳出了翻译活动的 本质属性。进而把“翻译”区分为翻译活动、翻译者和翻译产品三种概念。同时又以时 问为线索，对翻译实践中某些处理可译不可译的悖论的个案进行对比分析，得出不可译 性转化的动态发展过程不是归纳、静态的积累过程，而是一个不断的批判证伪的发展过 程。又有一些已经得到解决的不可译性的现象在新的社会语言环境中又要重新处理，从 而产生了重译的现象，而且往往是重译的结果部分或完全地证伪了原先的翻译，把不可译 性进一步降低。正是在重译过程中，才不断地涌现出优秀的翻译作品，体现了人类在翻 译过程中，把不可译性转化为可译性的努力同时人类对不可译现织的认识也从表面走 向深入，从静态观点走向动态观点。 第三章 本章节首先阐述了对翻译过程中存在可译性和不可译性悖论的个人理解和看法，笔 者认为不能因为在翻译过程中存在着不可译性而全盘否定翻译活动的意义，但也不能完 全否认不可译性的存在，而盲目提高翻译的可译性限度。翻译研究在当今已广泛地被认 为是一门科学。通过翻译与其他的科学研究( 例如医学研究) 相互比较，可以找出它们 都存在着很有趣的共同点：翻译活动中存在着可译性和不可译性的矛盾，而其他科学也 存在着类似的矛盾，例如在医学研究中的可治之症和不治之症的差别。因此可以得出科 学研究中普遍存在的可行性不可行性的矛盾证是推动人类知识进步的动力。本章节的内 容结合波普尔的知识进化论的观点来说明翻译理论中关于不可译性转化为可译性的内 在规律。 接着介绍二十世纪英国哲学家卡尔波普尔的简要t 占况以及他所提出的证伪理论和 知识进化论。而本章的重点在于论证波普尔的证伪理论和知识进化论适用于翻译理论中 不可译性的研究。结合上一章节提到的翻译实践中某螳处理可译不可译的悖论的个案发 展回顾，得出翻译理论方面的研究符合波普尔知识进化论中知识第三世界的特点：i 幺研 步的过程。从而说明了波普尔的证伪理论和知识进化论应用于翻译理论中不可译性的研 究的可行性。 第四章 在前面各个章节进行理论介绍和论证的基础上，本章将重点放在对翻译实践的探讨 方面进行论述。首先，对翻译实践中降低不可译性的问题的传统方法进行总结，并将它 们分为两类：归化和异化。其次，提出以上两种翻译策略在降低不可译性反面的不足之 处。针对以上不足，按照知识进化具有相当的自主性的观点，本章提出了新的翻译方法。 第一，探讨在当今文化全球化的背景下而产生的克服英汉翻译中的不可译性的新途径， 那就是，通过第三种语言。利用全球文化交流不均衡而形成新的语言文化的三角，来绕 过英汉双语问长期存在的不可译的障碍。第二，提出了造字翻译的方法，对于在目的语 中无法找到的来源于源语的新词，译者可以大胆的创造新词来提高可译性。笔者更进一 步地提出在当今中国经济迅速发展，国际地位提升的情况下，当今的翻译人员应该加强 民族自信心，探索英汉之间翻译的新途径，跨越这两种语言之间的不可译障碍，积极向 国际社会推广中国文化。 第五章结论 通过以上的论述，明确地表达了笔者对于克服英汉翻译中存在的不可译性问题的看 法：翻译过程中出现不可译现象是不可避免的，而且这种问题是总在按照知识发展进化
