西西比州为背景，继承了美国南方文学的悠久传统，带有浓厚的地方色彩；但另一方 面，她的作品又充满浓郁的现代气息，可以说其作品是南方传统文学与现代文学结合 的产物。韦尔蒂善于借助象征，去挖掘在现代社会中过去对人的意义。她小说中的人 物往往在故事结束时从蒙昧状态中觉醒过来，意识到过去的价值，善待过去，珍视过 去，但不沉迷于过去，体现出新一代美国南方人自我觉醒，自我审视，自我改造，自 我完善以面对已经改变的世界的生活态度和人生理念。 可见自“南方文艺复兴 以来，南方人在认识领域做出努力，渴望重新审视世界， 通过对过去的探讨，与时俱进，寻找到一种生存模式，以更好地理解现在，客观面对 变化中的新南方。 韦尔蒂的小说乐观者的女儿写于2 0 世纪6 0 年代，1 9 7 3 年获得普利策奖。 该小说通过描写一个家庭的风波，把老法官的女儿劳雷尔这个典型的美国南方女性的 亲身经历如实地展现出来。当父母和丈夫都死后，劳雷尔生活在自己内心所意识的孤 独里，家从此不再属于她，她只能生活在沉思冥想中，生活于“记忆 中。在经历了 丈夫，母亲，父亲的相继死亡后，悲痛的生活使她懂得控制自己，毕竟劳雷尔作为南 方新女性的一员，不是一个消极怀旧的人物，她最终选择离开家乡，离开除了撩起人 阵阵记忆，别无所有的家，回到了芝加哥的“尘世”去生活。在最后，劳雷尔清楚地 世纪的南方正经历巨大的社会变迁，南方人不能沉缅于回忆，要走出回忆，着 眼未来，才能适应时代的变迁，这为变化主题提供了时代背景。随着时代发展，文学 上现代派的出现，为改变主题提供了文学土壤。 第二章致力于分析文本主人公劳雷尔陷入“回忆”的原因。过去的美好时光使得 劳雷尔感觉到爱的存在，当父母及丈夫去世后，爱的缺失使劳雷尔感觉到现实的残酷， 而不愿面对现实，尤其是继母法伊的出现，使得劳雷尔倍感被动。法伊代表的是现实， 或者是现在，将来，这与过去和回忆的代表劳雷尔格格不入，二者之间充斥着无法调 和的矛盾。完美的过去与残酷的现实形成鲜明对比，正是这种对比使劳雷尔沉迷于过 去的美好回忆中，欲罢不能。马斯洛的人的需求理论为主人公的行为提供了理论依据。 人有寻求安全感的需求，有寻求爱和归属感的需求。在回忆中，劳雷尔对爱和归属感 的需求得到满足。 第三章从结构和意象的运用两方面来分析作者表现“回忆一和改变的独特手法。 “鸟”的意向在文本中被运用的淋漓尽致，“鸟 既是回忆本身的象征，又是劳雷尔 的象征。通过描写黑暗的暴风雨之夜鸟儿的恐惧来体现劳雷尔本身对现实的恐惧；而 小说晟后，劳雷尔对鸟的释放，象征着劳雷尔对回忆的释放，以及对自己的释放。通 过对劳雷尔服饰的描写，来暗示劳雷尔的人生选择。当劳雷尔换上属于芝加哥的服装， 表示着她最终决定回归属于自己的天地。“和面板一在小说中是回忆的载体，它承载 了主人公太多的爱和欣赏，而小说结尾部分，劳雷尔对法伊妥协，对“和面板 放弃， 也表明劳雷尔最终会抛却回忆，走向滚滚向前的现实生活。 第四章论证了女主人公作为有现代意识的南方女性最终抛却过去，走出回忆，重 新过回属于自己的新生活的最终结局。通过重新审视父母及自己的婚姻，劳雷尔发现
