They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny(保姆).Most evenings,Daniel wouldnt get home until eight or nine oclock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales.“I always wanted to have a farm here,”says Daniel,“and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. Its taken some getting used to,but its been worth it.We have to think twice now, about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However,I think its made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”Liz,however,is not quite sure.“I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours.Im not really a country girl, but I suppose Im gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though,is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”56.What do the first two paragraphs tell us?A.People seldom declined over the last few yearsin part because of safer cars and tougher drunkdriving laws. But we are still not as safe on the highways as most of us want to be.A motor vehicle death occurs on the average of once every 13 minutes;an injury, every 6 seconds. And motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of deaths among Americans under 37 years of age.Safety on the highways is not totally out of our hands. Here are five ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.1.When your parents said you were safer in larger car, they were right.People in small cars are injured more often and more seriously than people traveling in large cars.Manufacturers of small cars are building in more safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main cause of the problem. No matter how good the safety features are on a small car,its at a serious disadvantage in a crash with a vehicle that is a lot bigger and heavier.2.Being slammed(用力甩)into glass and metal car partsor being thrown from the carcan really do damage to flesh and blood.Thats why vehicle occupants(乘车者)should wear safety belts. The safety belts main purpose is to restrain(拉回)you if your car has a sudden, violent encounter with another vehicle or objector if it rolls over. How much do belts help?A lot.A lap-and-shoulder belt combination(结合) can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent and the chance of serious injury by 50 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA).3.Air bags are important.More than half of all new cars sold have air bags, and for good reason.Air bags provide additional protection in frontal crashesthe type of crash that kills the most motoristswhen occupants are also wearing lap and shoulder safety belts.Consumers are demanding air bags in the cars they buy.The protection provided by air bags is limited in side or behind impacts.Effective as they are, they cant take the place of properly fastened safety belts.4.A vehicles head restraint is not for relaxing your head while you idle at a traffic light. The purpose of the head restraint is to protect your neck and head if a car hits you from behind.Without protection, your head can be snapped back, breaking your neck.(This is often known as “whiplash”).The head restraints of a vehicle may or may not be adjustable(可调整的).There is a tendency with adjustable restrains to leave them in the lowest position, which protects only short people. If your head restraint is adjustable,it should be set so it can fully support your head and neck in a crash.5.Designated(执意不喝酒的)drivers make drunk driving crashes less likely. Many Americans rate drunk driving as the most serious highway safety problem. Many people have realized that mixing drinking and driving can lead to death or injury, jail time, drivers license suspension(吊销执照),higher insurance(保险)bills and other consequences(后果).There are movements to strengthen penalties(惩罚)for drinking and driving.64.The underlined word “impacts” in line 4 of fact 3 probably means_.A.blowsB.crashesC.speedingD.damages65.According to the passage, car safety belts_.A.save livesB.are not very successfulC.are dangerousD.can avoid any risks66.This article is mainly about_.A.the cause of serious accidentsB.how you can avoid serious injuries in a car accidentC.why you should wear car safety beltsD.how you can protect yourself during the accidents67.Which question is NOT answered in the passage?A.Do car safety belts help to prevent serious injuries?B.What kind of crash kills the most motorists?C.How many accidents each year are caused by drinking and driving?D.How often do motor vehicle crashes happen?DYou and your husband/wife share many of the same points of view and basic values, but you find yourselves continually getting into arguments about certain important matters.Whats the problem? Is there something wrong with your partner,or the relationship? Before you blame yourself, you should be aware that these arguments may be simply caused by differences in your conversational style,or in how you get to a conversation.According to Deborah Tannen, author of the best-selling book You Just Dont Understand, men and women view the world differently, and as a result, they speak and hear things differently.“A man sees the world,”says Tannen,“as a hierarchical(分等级的)social order in which hes either one up or one down.In this world,”she explains,“conversations are negotiations(谈判)in which people try to achieve and get to the upper hand if they can,and protect themselves from others attempts to put them down and push them around.”Women,on the other hand, view the world as a network of connections.“In this world,”notes Tannen,“conversations ar
