Several studies have linked drinking green tea to lessening psychological problems and Kaijun Niu, of Tohoku University Graduate School, and colleagues found people aged 70 and older who drank four or more cups of green tea daily were 44 percent less likely to experience depression. Nius team investigated 1,058 relatively healthy elderly men and women. About 34 percent of the men and 39 percent of the women had symptoms of depression, according to the study that was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A total of 488 interviewees said they drank four or more cups of green tea a day, 284 said they drank two to three cups daily and the rest reported having one or fewer cups daily. According to the researchers, the apparent effect of drinking more green tea on easing symptoms of depression did not fade after they factored in social and economic status, gender, diet and history of medical problems. There was no association between consumption of black or oolong tea, or coffee, and lower symptoms of depression. A component in green tea which is thought to have a good effect on the brain, may explain the potentially beneficial effect shown in the current study, Niu noted, adding that more study is needed.16.Whats the result of the research?A) There is a feel good chemical in coffee and black tea. According to a report in the September 1st Canadian Medical Association Journal, when our paychecks get lighter, we do more than tighten our purse stringswe also tighten our belts, kick bad habits and manage to lower our death rates. Economic growth is usually associated with increased life spans, but the report says thats only true for very poor countries. Researchers looked at data from dozens of 20th century international health studies and found that, once the annual income of the citizens passed $5,000, recessions actually helped health. During lean times, people in relatively wealthy countries drink and smoke less and stop overeating. They also go out less, which means fewer trips in the car. It all adds up to fewer deaths from things like lung cancer, liver disease, heart attacks and car crashes. The researchers say that fewer hours in the office can also mean more time with family and friends. These close social interactions lead to less stress and better health. Of course, some people may find more family time to be a lot like good medicinehard to swallow.19.What will happen when peoples paychecks get lighter?A) People may get a serious disease. The study was published in New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists used a computer model to predict how just three grams less salt a day would affect heart disease in the United States. The scientists said the results would be 13 percent fewer heart attacks, four percent fewer deaths and 11 percent fewer new cases of heart disease. And 240 billion dollars in health care savings. Researchers said it could prevent 100,000 heart attacks and 92,000 deaths every year. The researchers were from the University of California, Stanford University and Columbia University. They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt. Such campaigns are already in place in Britain, Japan and Finland. However, some scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health of millions of people. Michael Alderman is among the critics. He is a high blood pressure expert and professor in New York. He says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. But he says studies have not clearly shown that lowering salt means fewer heart attacks. And he says salt has other biological effects. He says calling for reductions in the national diet could have good effects, but it could also have harmful results. He says there is not enough evidence either way.22.Whats the predicted result of eating three grams less salt a day?A) 30% fewer heart attacks. B) 4% fewer deaths. C) 11% more heart attacks.
