摘要语法衔接在语篇构建中起着举足轻重的作用。它是赋予话语篇章性的重要手段，同时还起着组织篇章结构的作用。省略是语法衔接的一种手段之一，本文主要以韩礼德和哈桑的语篇衔接理论为理论基础，运用对比分析的方法，对所收集的英汉语料中出现的省略衔接手段进行对比分析，从中找出它们的差异，并试图从文化、哲学、心理和客观历史文化背景的角度对其予以诠释，从而运用研究成果指导语言学习。通过对大量例句的分析，作者从省略的三个层面即名词性省略、动词性省略和小句性省略逐一对英汉语省略现象进行具体比较分析，探讨英汉语省略差异的原因。在认同其他学者关于英汉语篇省略原因的同时，作者提出英汉语篇省略差异的根本原因是中西方现存的客观历史文化背景。客观存在的历史生活背景决定了中西方不同的语言文化习惯和思维习惯，从而造成了英汉两种语言省略现象各自的特点和差异。在阐明写作的目的和意义的基础上，本文简要总结了中外语言学家和学者对语篇省略的研究成果，尤其是韩礼德和哈桑对语篇省略的研究，在此基础上指出中国语言学家对语篇省略的研究几乎都继承了韩礼德和哈桑的理论基础；作者指出与其他衔接手段相比，语篇语言学家，特别是中国语篇语言学家对省略的研究还停留在比较粗浅的阶段，不如国外研究的具体，因此本文希望做较具体的语篇省略研究，并对英汉语篇省略进行比较研究；指出英汉语篇中的三种省略现象：名词性省略、动词性省略和小旬性省略，通过引用大量例旬对这些省略现象进行对比分析，找出英汉省略的异同；分析英汉语篇省略异同的原因，指出英汉语篇省略的原因与两个民族的思维、心理、文化、哲学和客观历史文化背景有关，英汉语言结构的主要差异在于英语重形合，而汉语重意合，这一点对于英汉省略手段对比至关重要，所以本文对形合和意合进行了必要的阐释。本文着重提出英汉语篇省略差异的根本原因是中西方现存的客观历史文化背景。客观的历史文化背景决定了中西方不同的语言文化习惯和思维习惯，从而使得两种语言省略现象出现各自的特点和差异；提出研究语篇省略现象的实用价值，重点介绍其怎样应用于语言学习中。总之，省略是语言发展趋势中的重要特征之一，它表明语言发展的简化性趋向。通过以上对比分析，本文力求更具体的探讨英汉语篇的省略现象及省略差异，努力寻求英汉语篇省略差异的根本原因，以此指导英汉语言的学习。关键词：语篇；省略；对比；衔接a
