硕士学位论文 m a s t e r st h e s i s 内容摘要 觉醒是十九世纪末美国著名女作家凯特肖班于1 8 9 9 年发表的最具争议的 一部中篇小说。出版不久即遭禁。自上世纪六十年代以来，随着妇女解放运动的兴 起，觉醒开始受到批评家的广泛关注。大多数国内外学者采用女权主义视角以 及心理分析法来研究这部作品。近几年来，一些美国批评家，如d o n a l dp i z e r ，也 开始注意到觉醒中的自然主义倾向，但没有进行详细的分析。在前人成就的基 础上，本文旨在从自然主义视角探讨觉醒的主题，人物和写作风格。 首先在第一章里，作者简述了论文的研究背景以及作家凯特肖班的生平和写作 生涯。接着在第二章里，论文作者对美国自然主义的起源，主要作家以及主要观点 作了简要全面的介绍。1 8 5 9 年，达尔文发表物种起源，提出物种进化的各种机 制，强调了人生命的机械性。动物在“适者生存”机制的支配下，相互竞争，以求 生存，并在这一斗争中获得不断的进化。达尔文的生物进化理论得到了发展，形成 “社会达尔文主义”，对人类社会的发展和各种机制做出相似的解释。达尔文进化 论在欧洲文学界产生很大的影响，促进了自然主义文学的发展。被誉为“自然主义 之父 的法国小说家左拉完整地提出自然主义小说的主要观点。美国自然主义文学 受到了法国自然主义文学的影响，同时，美国内战后的社会状况，对自然主义在美 国的产生和发展起到了极大的作用。美国的自然主义作家们一方面表达了对人类困 境的无奈，另一方面排斥了传统宗教和道德伦理在人们生活中的作用。 在第三章里，论文作者剖析了觉醒这部小说的自然主义主题。女主人公埃 德娜同时受到内外两种力量的控制，一种是埃德娜内心的不安和痛苦，另一种是她 周围的自然环境和社会环境。这两种力量相互交织，促使埃德娜不断寻找自我。除 此之外，肖班还强调了自然对人物命运的漠视。作为一名女性，埃德娜始终逃脱不 了妻子和母亲的社会角色。 在第四章里，论文作者从自然主义的视角分析了小说中埃德娜这个主要人物。 同其它自然主义作品一样，肖班着重刻画了埃德娜的原始本能性本能。为了满足 自己的性欲，埃德娜和自己并不爱的阿罗宾发生了性关系。另外，肖班还强调埃德
