The film and video products have their special characteristics of the value of beauty that represent the different artistic style, the almost real scene brings audiences in the situation, and they can learn more about foreigner geography, history, customs and politics. Theses previous studies have analyzed mass media plays an important role in education application especially in language learning. Based on the previous studies, this thesis studies the film and television media on the cultivation of intercultural communicative competence. I also use network collection method to fulfill the content of this article with the help of internet. In addition, I discuss with my classmates and teachers about the problems and change our ideas during the writing. The thesis consists of five parts: Introduction, Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three Chapter Four and Conclusion. The Introduction sketches the whole paper, which includes research background, research subject and significance, and organization of the thesis. Chapter one is the reviews of the study of intercultural communication competence. Chapter Two gives concept of intercultural communicative competence, appreciation of television works and culture communication. Chapter Three intend to narrate the impact of film and television media effect on intercultural communicative competence because the factors of film and television impact on cross-cultural communication expression in various points and taking a successful American movie which have communicated the different culture as an example. Chapter Four is talking about three ways to take advantage of film and TV media to enhance intercultural communication. The conclusion summarizes the whole thesis and points out the limitations of the study. In addition, it brings up some suggestions for further studies in the future. Chapter 1 Literature ReviewReview the study of previous works, it have discussed the definition of cross-cultural communicative competence, then leaded to a series of study programs of intercultural communicative competence. Afterwards, there comes a lot of scholar want to find out the element of effect on communicative competence, in these works, they also mentioned that the movie and TV media impact on cultural communication. Most of them point on how does American dramas spread their culture and how does the multimedia cultivate on cross-cultural communicative competence.1.1 Previous Research Status at HomeThe previous researches mainly focus on the advantages of using films or other video forms to promote learners language competence and cultural awareness. Some scholars also discuss film teaching from several different angles. However, only a few studies have mentioned the disadvantage if using film in influencing learners ICC. Whats more, the number of researches in this field is too narrow, especially for the empirical researches. In a word, theoretically speaking, the previous researches have done a lot of work in this field, however, the evidences from empirical researches which can approve the teaching values of films are far from enough. As our social come into globalization circumstance, the meaning of intercultural competence is becoming increasingly significant around the world. There are four forces of globalization clearly reflected which associate of cross-cultural competence: new markets, new organization, new technologies, and new forms. Globalization has promoted worldwide contacts between companies and organizations, which in turn facilitate people to develop the useful skills for dealing with the multicultural communication situations.Nowadays, the advanced technology and information systems and the economic globalization all made intercultural contacts more convenient and frequent than ever before. More and more people are needed in China to be engaged in the intercultural communication, which requires them not only to be able to speak the second language fluently, but, more important, to use it appropriately in the real context. That is, they should be familiar with the culture of the target language and develop strong intercultural communicative competence (ICC). The relevance of intercultural competence to generally speaking education in China has become universal due to the growing demand for university graduates with both English using abilities and other intercultural communicative competence, mentioned by Sercu Lies in Autonomous Learning and the Acquisition of Intercultural Communicative Competence.(2013)Chen noted that the interdependence of our global communities calls for more skillful interactions across nations and linguistic boundaries. In todays pluralistic society, intercultural competence is not only a need, but a requirement for success. Being able to communicate cross-culturally increases success in international business, enables productive interpersonal contacts, and decreases mutual misunderstanding. For example, in multinational cooperation, culturally proficient and communicative people get better answer with the media. In todays job market, one needs to have qualifications such as the ability of master a foreign languages and customs so as to become easier to find a good job. 1.2 Previous Researches Status AbroadReview the study of previous works, it have discussed the definition of cross-cultural communicative competence, then leaded to a series of study programs of intercultural communicative competence. Afterwards, there comes a lot of scholar want to find out the element of effect on communicative competence, in these works, they also mentioned that the movie and TV media impact on cultural communication. Most of them point on how does American dramas spread their culture and how does the multimedia cultivate on cross-cultural communicative competence.Wang Liang and J.A. Coleman(2009)said that the language is rich in information because of the cultural including instead of its vivid language forms. Kramsh(1993)said that the variety of the target language originates from peoples different sexes, social positions, educational backgrounds and religious beliefs, so some people advice that students should have the opportunity to approach the target language to enrich their culture accumulation. In terms of language teaching field, all emphasizes that the purpose of foreign language teaching is to cultivate students ICC.A cup of years ago, several scholars had found the enormous teaching values of films. Long(1983) said films can improve students listening abilities which can further build up students learning confidence. Lonergan pointed that films can be absolutely used in classes and can make language learning become authentic and valuable. In addition, films can satisfy students strong desire to master a language and communication skills. Many researchers say that films can improve students abilities of guessing new words and integrating complex information. What is more, if learners can flexibly and scientifically using the advantages of foreign films, the ICC of them would greatly enhanced cognitively, affectively and behaviorally.Since the American sociolinguist introduced the theory of Communicative Competence which goes further than just grammatical knowledge and includes psychological and socio -linguistic factors in a communication context,it was quickly developed by various groups of researchers, all of them proposed that communicative competence is an integration of linguistic competence, communicative skills and cultural knowledge and these three factors are never separable from the each other during the process of real communication. Both the theory and practice proves the more and more important role of cultural knowledge in intercultural communication than ever before. Correspondingly, to really improve the students ICC, many language researchers and educationalists are attaching more and more importance to culture teaching in SLT. However, in China, SLT (in most part, ELT) is lagging far behind that in Europe and America, and how to teach culture and what to teach are still problems that interest many scholars and teachers and are being hotly discussed in recent years.Chapter 2 Theoretical Basis of the StudyFor getting better knowing of cross-cultural communicative competence, it is necessary for us to know inter-cultural communication. We cannot study inter-cultural communicative competence well with knowing nothing about inter-cultural communication. The following chapter will give a thorough explanation of cross-cultural communication and inter-cultural communicative competence. 2.1 Cross-cultural Communication “Communication is a form of human behavior derived from a need to connect and interact with other human beings”, “it occurs whenever meaning is attributed to behavior or the residue of behavior”. We can never avoid communicating with others indeed, thus we have to face the problems actively. Communication Cross-cultural communication occurs when one person of a culture meet a person in another culture. To be more specific, cross-cultural communication is a kind of communication between people who having different cultural perceptions and customs even living styles.Cultural communications are deeper and more complicated than spoken or written messages. The essence of effective cross-cultural communication makes people more understand your expressions and pass your emotional messages. In other words, it is very important for different countries people to communicate each other. How do you have the right awareness of cross-culture? You need to keep an open mind, try your best to accept different cultures and broaden your horizon .Culture mainly includes four aspects which greatly influence the cross-cultural communication, They are language and non-language behaviors, customs, way of thought and values. What people think, what they do, and the material products they produce. Thus, mental processes, beliefs, knowledge, and values are components of culture. Culture also has several properties: it is shared, learned, symbolic, transmitted cross-generationally, adaptive, and integrated. Some anthropologists would define culture entirely as mental rules guiding behavior, although often wide divergence exists between the acknowledged rules for correct behavior and what people actually do. Consequently, some researchers pay most attention to human behavior and its material products. However, during the cross-cultural communication, you still need to know the background, history, traditions, ritual of different countries and learn different countries language. Even people in these countries often use gestures, movements, facial expressions and so on. You also understand more, in this way, you can truly master cross-cultural communication skills and put across the messages efficiently. Obviously, cross-cultural communication plays an important role in our daily life, especially in conversations, business activities and teaching processes. In communicative competence, Hymens included not only the ability to form correct sentences bit to use them at appropriate times. Since he proposed the idea in the early 1970s, it has been expanded considerably, and various types of competences have been proposed. However, the basic idea of communicative competence remains the ability to use language appropriately, both receptively and productively, in real situations, Therefore, communicative competence is now widely recognized as an important goal of language teaching, and a good deal has been written concerning the necessity of making knowledge about social linguistic rules a part of classroom instruction in ESL or, indeed, in any second language. As to intercultural communicative competence, it generally refers to the competence that people have when they communicate with people from different cultures. In its most sense, intercultural communication occurs when a member of one culture produces a message for consumption by a member of another culture. More precisely, intercultural communication is a communication between people whose cultural perceptions and symbol systems are distinct enough to alter the communication event. Frequently, the term intercultural communication is used when referring to communication between people from different cultures collected by Pegrum Mark (ed.) in The Film, Culture and Identity: Critical Intercultural Literacies for the Language Classroom (2013) Intercultural communication is not equal to be a good listener, It is more how to get the meaning of others and respect the other. It is not the host of a culture over the others or the uniqueness of the grammar or linguistics of one culture. It is all about the culture of a nation and about identity. In order to keep nation identity and going on, people in each country should put a high value on their unique culture.2.2 The Components of Intercultural CompetenceWidely speaking, intercultural competence related to openness to diversity; in this article it also refers to critical skills of thought which required for effective use of global mass media and the ability to draw on both ones own and out-group member cultural resources in spoken communication. As a useful skill, intercultural competence is usually used interchangeably with such notions as cultural competence. All these concepts refer to ways of thinking and behaving that enable members of one cultural, ethnic or linguistic group to work effectively with members of another (Lynch & Hanson 1998: 492). For example, William
