白鲸这个故事中有很大一部分是作者亲身经历过的。主人公名叫以实玛利，曾跟商船出过海。他和在南塔开特结识的好友魁魁格到即将出航的捕鲸船“裴廓德号”报名。在航海过程中他知道了“莫比迪克” 一只凶猛而狡诈的白鲸，在大海上一再使许多捕鲸者失肢断臂，船破人亡，是捕鲸者心目中的一种妖魔。“裴廓德号”船长亚哈，在一次猎击中给莫比迪克咬掉了一条腿，因此，他满怀复仇之念，一心想追捕这条白鲸，竟至失去理性，变成一个独断专行的偏热症狂。他将白鲸看成人间万恶之源，发誓要到天涯海角去追索它。他搜罗一批所谓社会渣滓，不顾船东的利益，以猎鲸为名出航，使用威胁利诱的手段，勒迫他们跟他一起去做环球旅行，专事搜捕白鲸。经过长期的海上颠簸生活，历经千难万险，终于遇到白鲸，经过三天三夜的恶战，最后总算结果了这条白鲸。但是除了以实玛利以外，无一生还，所以由幸存的主人公向人间讲述这个故事。我很敬佩以实玛利在南塔开特结识的朋友魁魁格，他开始被以实玛利看作是“吃人生番”，但他的品格使他与以实玛利很快成为了朋友。刚开始，这个“浑身纹有奇怪刺花”的“吃人生番”给人的感觉是恐怖的。但后来，他对自己宗教的虔诚、对人的热情让人感觉到他并不是个“野蛮人”，作为异教徒，他是有礼貌的、诚信的。在他不知道有个陌生人在他房间里时，很自然的对一个人偶祭拜，是那么虔敬；在遇事时会向这个人偶询问，象对真人一样；他其实是一个部落的准继承人，但他向往外界的所谓的“文明”，于是离开了家乡想到文明人中间学点技艺，以便将来回到老家使自己的同胞能过的更幸福。可是他现在认为一切完全绝望了，这世界到处是邪恶的，“我还是做一辈子的异教徒吧”，他甚至还深怕文明。文明人的影响已经使自己不配登上那相承三十代的纯净无疵的异教王座。作者用这个人物抒发了他对种族问题的看法，讽刺了当时的黑奴制度。白鲸是一部捕鲸业史，也是一部百科全书式的作品。但是，最主要的是它是一部绚丽多彩，蔚为壮观，充满艰险而又英勇壮烈的小说。它使我们从中看到捕鲸业在资本主义发展过程中的作用，看到捕鲸作为一种工业的整个生产过程以及生产者的种种艰辛险阻的生活。作者通过象征手法、兼用烘托、借喻、暗示、曲笔等表现手法，敷演了曲折跌宕的故事，刻画了人物们隐秘的内心世界。抒发了作者对美与丑、善与恶、文明与野蛮、民主与奴役、命运与自由的见解，表达了他对普通人民、特别是黑人的深挚的同情，揭露与讽刺资产阶级的所谓文明。在这本书里有些地方表面上是很滑稽可笑的，比如以实玛利与魁魁格同床共枕的紧张与恐惧、船长室餐厅里三个头目和船长之间由于等级不同而小心翼翼地吃饭等等，可字里行间透出了浓浓的阴郁、低沉与悲观。总之白鲸是一本讽刺了社会的黑暗、感叹了捕鲸者的艰辛困苦的悲惨命运的、值得细细研读的百科全书。Moby DickIn this story has the very major part is the author by oneself experience.
