yuriko shiratakiprofessor haleycommunication 105 / speech 3july 6, 2010persuasive speech:specific purpose statement: to persuade my audience that puppy mills are not the healthy way of adapting a dog. introduction:attention getter: do the right thing is not always easy. remember when you were a kid; there was almost always a mean person that we would say was a bully who was very good at making one persons life miserable. somehow the mean person had a power over the other person who was being targeted. whether you took an action to defend the person who was bullied or not, did you think it was right for the mean person to use his/her power to make other ones life so sad? you think that was the right thing to do?claim: when you think you are ready for a dog, you should avoid buying from a pet store or through internet; because pet stores and internet sales heavily rely on puppy mills often conduct their business to treat dogs under inhumane conditions.significance: puppy mills have become a controversial issue throughout the nation. this affects not only dogs physically and socially but also our community, according to the article its up to us to stop puppy mills, accessed through proquest , its up to each one of us to stop dogs from suffering in puppy mill hells by never buying animals from pet stores, classified ads, parking lots or over the internet.preview: today i would like to persuade you that people should pay more attention in obtaining a puppy/dog as their future pet by demonstrating to you that puppy mills operate their businesses without regard to the animals welfare, the questionable way that a puppy mill business runs has consequences, and finally there is something what we can do.body:i. large commercial breeding kennels, known as puppy mills, are often considered to be conducting their business inhumanely. a. a puppy mill is characterized by various breeding dogs kept in small cages in unsanitary conditions with insufficient food and veterinary care.1. an internal government report says dogs are dying and living in horrific conditions in large kennels known as puppy mills, according to the article usda fails to crack down on puppy mills, accessed through proquest. 2. the breeding dogs at puppy mills live their entire lives are kept into small cages, never seeing the sun, never have human attention or exercise, never knowing the pleasure of a treat, a toy, a bed or the feeling of grass under their feet. 3. the state regulators expressed that the smell of a high-volume puppy mill is unforgettable, a stench of urine and feces. ammonia fumes burn the nose and eyes. the simultaneous barking of hundreds of dogs creates a wall of sound that makes it hard to think, let alone converse, stated in the article a quest to shutter dog mills, accessed by proquest.b. puppy mills commonly disregard the health of the dogs so that many consumer claims the way puppy mills often cheat customers by selling animals that turn out to be defective or diseased.1. many of puppy mill dogs are found to have kennel cough, mange, ringworm and other diseases according to the article its up to us to stop puppy mills, accessed through proquest.a. in the publication of st. louis post dispatch by hathaway matthew accessed through proquest, tricia williams in missouri bought a bulldog puppy from a mid-missouri breeder she found online. the 11-week-old pup seemed perfectly healthy. she fell in love with lola immediately. then just a few days later, a veterinarian delivered the bad news. lola had a persistent cough and a severe heart murmur. a specialist diagnosed lola with kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory ailment that is often associated with commercial breeding operations. her nightmare was not over. after she paid $1,500 for her dog and spent more than $1,000 in veterinary expenses, lola died; just five months after williams purchased her from a breeder.b. carla kibler, a woman in illinois, said she wishes she had investigated before falling in love with beefcake, an english bulldog puppy. she bought from a pet store. her 10-year-old triplets agreed to forgo their christmas presents to get the dog, which cost more than $2,000. but beefcake arrived at home with kennel cough, and three weeks later he died of pneumonia.c. not only are individual consumers affected by puppy mills, they also have fiscal impact on our society. 1. puppy mills produce more than half a million puppies a year, according to wikidedia.2. according to humane society estimates, some 3 million to 4 million homeless dogs and cats are euthanized in the united states every year.internal summary/preview: although we now have become aware that puppy mills are profit oriented mass production pet business with unethical ways of treatment dogs, some people found it as a growing business opportunity to make fortune with the prosperity of puppy mills.ii. even though many advocates and supporters are protesting, puppy mill businesses have been playing a significant part as an industry to assist u.s. economy. a. puppy mills contribute to have opportunities to construct business entities in rural area. 1. records show the rural areas in states such as oklahoma, missouri, and pennsylvania are the largest puppy-producing states, according to the article puppy profits: state laws lack bite accessed through proquest.2. in the publication of lancaster new era by ryan robinson, accessed through proquest, according the breeders, the puppy business is thriving with good profits for wholesalers and retailers, due to a consistent and high demand for many breeds.3. however, the demand for puppies makes breeders concentrate on volume more than quality; this cause dogs cramped into small space less veterinary care.b. puppy mills provide convenient ways of selling for the buyers. 1. puppy mills typically sell mass numbers of dogs to pet stores and internet buyers, by anne stering in the publication of south bend tribune, accessed by proquest. 2. in addition, puppy mills constitute a multi-million-dollar industry which attracts puppy buyers with flashy web sites with official-looking registration papers. however, humane society of the united states proved that claims made by pet store salespeople and on puppy sellers ads and web sites are often deceiving.internal summary/preview: while the motives of puppy mills are undeniably commercial, there are things we can do to prevent this unethical behavior.iii. the lack of care for the dogs in the puppy mills is a serious problem, but there are fiscal and humanitarian issues from pet overpopulation that we need to deal with.a. until we stop buying from the puppy mills, puppy mills will thrive. 1. people need to understand puppy mill create the core of the cancer which causes overpopulation of dogs. 2. approximately 99 percent of pet stores in america obtain dogs from puppy mills, according to the oprah winfrey show. b. there are things we can do to help millions of abused dogs and reduce overpopulation of dogs.1. according to the humane society of the united states website, “adopting a dog instead of buying one is one of the surest ways to strike a blow against puppy mills.” 2. local communities such as county animal services or local animal shelter offer adoption to create an opportunity to help as a member of community. a. one out of every four dogs in shelters is purebred. b. most of these shelter animals have already been spayed or neutered, and have received all their vaccinations and veterinary checkups.3. meet “willie”, my dog, adopted from canoga park pet adaption fund through in may 2009. it has been rewarding experience being new dog owner.conclusion:review: today, not like when we were in junior high school, we dont have to be afraid to stand up and defend what you believe is right. we have the power to change our society. i strongly believe it is not right that millions of innocent dogs have to be killed and treated inhumanely. the right thing to do is to stop this crazy cycle a puppy mill creates. help “mans best friend” and help me to support the idea to “stop puppy mills.”restate claim: when you think you are ready for a dog, you should avoid buying from a pet store or through internet;
