Introduce the city of St. Petersburg to students with the help of some pictures.( Purpose: To arouse students interest and help them focus on what will be discussed in the text)III. In-putTask one: Listen to the tape and consider some questions related to the text.1. Please give time and name of the builder of St. Petersburg.2. How do you understand the title “ A City of Heroes”?( Purpose: To help develop ability of catching useful information while listening)Task two: Read the story and summarize the main idea for each paragraph.( Purpose: To help students develop ability of finding topic sentences, thus enable them to grasp the general idea of the whole passage quickly)Task three: Please figure out meanings of the following words and phrases taken from the passage.1. give in 2. in ruins 3. bringback to life 4. pull down5. set up 6. under attack( Purpose: To understand meanings of words and expressions in the context)IV. A dialogue is required with the information about St. Petersburg from the text.( Purpose: To get students become more familiar with the text)2. Group work: Guilin is a well-known tourist city. The development of tourism has brought bad effects even damage to the cultural relics. Please work out possible measures that can be taken to protect the local cultural relics from being ruined.( Purpose: To develop ability of using English to solve problems in daily life)V. T: Do you want to pay a visit to these places? S: Yes! T: I suggest you be quick, because many years later things will be like this(Let the students enjoy a song from Jackson -Heal the World which is about wars, deforestation, animals dying out)T: After hearing the song, what are your feeling now?T: Everything is in disorder. Our mother-the earth is facing danger. Its being seriously pollutedStep2: new words (Teach the new words : summit representative rural poverty violence premier prosper . While explaining , show the students some related pictures that will leave a deeper impression on the students) T: There are so many problems. What can we do to protect our earth? How can we help more people to know the importance of protecting our earth.Can we solve the problems only by ourselves.No .We must cooperate with other countries. We can hold a meeting and discuss how to save the earth. The head leaders are worried about this too. So they sat together to talk about the solutions. We call the conferences they attend summits. Meanwhile we call the top part of a mountain a summit. The head leaders from all over the world at the summit are representatives. They are talking about the problems, and most of the problems are in rural areas. Most rural arrears are in poverty. If they still remain in poverty, there will be more violence. So our premiers are worried about this. They hope our country prospers and they also hope we can live in harmony with nature. T: These are all the new words we will meet in the reading passage. Together read after me.(Teach the new words and make sure that they can pronounce them correctly and know the meaning of them)Step3: Pre-reading (Before reading the text, the students have to predict the outline of this article. )T: Today we are going to read the passage- Welcome to the Earth Summit. The text is about the Earth Summit and some of the major problems facing the world. Now, please imagine that you are a reporter and you are going to write an article about the Earth Summit. Without reading the text; try to predict its content. Try to write down the outline of the summit. ( Sample answers OutlinePart 1 -Introduction:Definition of the Earth Summit and the purpose of holding it.Part 2 -Body: Major problems facing the world:a. May be water pollutionb. May be air pollution c. Since then, several Earth Summits have been held and much progress has been made.2). Among the speakers was Chinas Premier Zhu Rongji.3). Without international cooperation, developing countries cannot prosper, nor will sustainable development be possible.4). Only by changing the way we live can we save the earth.5). Not until we know more will we be able to improve the situation.6). There is a good chance that we will see less violence and fewer wars.T: You should pay more attention to these sentence structures.( If the students are able to understand the sentences well, just pass them. If they are not, I will give them a detailed explanation. If necessary, I will give more examples to let the students understand them better .)Step 7: InterviewT: Four students get a group. Three of the members are experts at the Earth Summit. One is a journalist who is interviewing them about the way to solve the big three. You may start like this: “Dear experts, Im a journalist from Chinese. Id like to know”(Several minutes later, I will invite some groups to act out their interviews.)Step 8: Summary and homework1).
