Pre-Reading Questions1. When was the construction of Fujian-Taiwan Folk Culture Town completed?2. Where is Chenghuang Temple?3. How many folk cultural museums are there in Fujian-Taiwan Folk Cultural Town in Xiamen? What are they?Fujian-Taiwan Folk Cultural TownThe relationship between Fujian and Taiwan has been especially close and inalienable since the ancient times. Fujian and Taiwan share the same profound culture, and in the common endeavor of people across the Taiwan straits, the past two decades has witnessed steady development in Fujian-Taiwan cultural exchange and cooperation. Fujian-Taiwan folk culture, as part of Fujian-Taiwan culture, is formed with profound characteristics of regional culture during a long period of common social life of Fujian and Taiwan people sharing the same cultural spirit. As the cross-strait communication goes deeper, the value of Fujian-Taiwan folk culture is increasingly being recognized. In recent years, Fujian province began to dig for the potential value behind the Fujian-Taiwan culture in terms of promoting the national traditional culture and deepening the cross-strait cultural exchange, and it has successfully launched the Cross-Strait Folk Culture Festival on a yearly basis, endowing the Fujian-Taiwan folk culture with a new connotation of the era.If you are interested in Fujian-Taiwan folk culture, now there is a new place quite worthy of your visit, that is, Fujian-Taiwan Folk cultural town in Xiamen. The inauguration ceremony honoring the ancient town for Fujian-Taiwan folk culture was held on Jan 3, 2013 in Xiamen when The Fujian-Taiwan folk cultural exhibition kicked off and eight museums of different themes there were open to the public for free for an extended period. Houxi Chenghuang Temple, located in Chengnei village, Houxi town in Jimei district of Xiamen, is a symbol of cultural communication between Fujian and Taiwan. Nowadays, many Taiwan worshipers go to Chenghuang Temple to make a pilgrimage every year. The construction of the folk cultural town here thereby has great significance in preserving the Fujian-Taiwan folk culture and it provides a good platform for people across Taiwan straits to deepen their understanding of cross-strait folk culture. The renowned relic collector in Taiwan Hong Mingzhang says:” Have a walk around here and look carefully, and you will find lots of interesting things and get to know about the charm of the ancient town as well as the folk culture. Although having been here for a couple of times already, I still dont feel tired of it.” Stepping into the Chengnei village, you will see the Chenghuang Temple in Xia City right in front of you. In the village, there are many well-preserved ancient houses in southern Fujian province and a gate of ancient city that remained unaffected till nowGongcheng Gate. It is reported that the emperor of Qing Dynasty Kangxi decreed in his first year 1662 that a city be built here and named it “Chengnei” which is also called “Xia City”. In the meantime, the Chenghuang Temple in Xia City was constructed in the South Gate of the city which is also called “Linhai Gate”, for the hope of getting Gods blessing. The Chenghuang Temple ahead of you now is a restoration completed in the 1990s on the original site and the whole village has already been rebuilt into the uniqueFujian-Taiwan folk cultural town.Up to now, Fujian-Taiwan Folk Cultural Town is the largest museum community in Xiamen with eight folk cultural museums of different themes, including a cross-straits museum, a Fujian-Taiwan official suppliers museum, Fujian-Taiwan horizontal inscribed board museum, Fujian and Taiwan Wine Culture Museum, Fujian-Taiwan old movies museum, Fujian-Taiwan tea museum, Fujian-Taiwan love museum and Fujian-Taiwan overseas Chinese cultural museum. The museums were built using the old houses in the area and have a collection of about 30,000 folk artifacts on display for the public and tourists. In Fujian-Taiwan official suppliers museum and Fujian-Taiwan horizontal inscribed board museum, there are royal costumes worn by kings and officials in Qin Dynasty, ancient weapons in Min and Qin Dynasties, the imperial examination papers, official seals, power cards, memorial archways, stone tablets and so on, while in the cross-straits museum, lots of exhibits left from the period of Republican China, the years of cross-strait confrontation, the times when Taiwan being occupied by Japan are displayed. Standing at the gate of Chengnei village, you can see a “movie theater of Xia City in the 1970s and 1980s”, the Fujian-Taiwan old movies museum, where there are more than 100 collections of old-fashioned movie players, around 800 old records and 6000 old movie posters. In the old movies museum, the old films like Little Heroes and Spring and Autumn in the Small Town are presented on the spot, creating a dense nostalgic atmosphere. In Fujian-Taiwan love museum, there are not only cultural relics reflecting the love of ancient people but also some bizarre ancient articles for romance. The construction of “Fujian-Taiwan Folk Cultural Town” receives the common concerns across Taiwan straits and via the bridge of “Chenghuang”, cross-strait communication is becoming more and more frequent. Hongbo Ren, Engaged in the Minnan cultural studies for many years in Fujian Provincial Research Institute of Culture and History, said that people on both sides same clan ancestors, the common source of cross-strait culture and root. The items on display in the museums will be conducive to awakening the memory of the people on both sides and will naturally lead to a closer cultural bond linking the two sides of the straits. The relics here are excellent cultural resources and deserve to be well preserved. The newly built Fujian-Taiwan Folk Cultural Town will not only help preserve the cultural relics and inherit the valuable cross-strait folk culture, but also will enhance the cross-strait cultural exchange and development as well.Glossary1. archway: n. rtwe a passageway that has a curved roof拱门2. article: n. rtkl one of a class of artifacts 物品3. artifact: n.rtfkt an object made by men. 手工艺品4. bizarre: a. bzr odd and strange 奇异的;古怪的5. blessing: n. bls sth. good that you are grateful for 恩赐;福祉6. community: n. kmjunti a group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other or (生态)群落;a group of people who are similar in some way群体;团体7. conducive: a. kndju:sv tending to bring about 有助于.的8. confrontation: n. knfrnten a fight or a battle between two groups of people 对抗;冲突9. connotation: n. knten an idea or quality that is implied or makes you think of 内涵; 涵义10. cooperation: n. kopren the practice of working with others for a particular purpose; joint action 合作;协作11. decree: v. dkri order officially 发布命令12. display: v. show to the public 显示;陈列13. endeavor: n. endev attempt by employing efforts 努力14. engage: v. nged work on sth. or involve actively in doing sth. 从事15. exhibit: v. zbt, - show or display in a public place 展示 n. sth. shown to the public 展品16. honor: v. n give rewards or honor to 给以荣誉;尊敬17. imperial: a. mpril relating to an empire 帝国的;皇帝的18. inalienable: a. nelnbl incapable of being transferred to another; unforfeitable 不可让与的;不可分割的19. inauguration: n njren the act of declaring a new building or institution open in a formal ceremony 落成仪式20. inherit: v. nhrt get sth. from people who has died 继承21. inscribe: v. nskrab carve or cut on some object 雕;刻22. launch: v. lnt, lnt start a large or important activity; begin with vigor 发起,开展(重大活动)23. memorial: a. mmril, -mor- to commemorate persons or events 纪念的24. occupy: v. kjpa move into and control a place or an area by force 占领; live or take possession of a house, farm, etc. 居住;占据25. original: a. rdnl preceding all others in time or being as first made 原来的;最初的26. pilgrimage: n. plrmd 朝圣27. platform: n. pltfrm a flat raised structure or area which sth. can stand on or land on. 平台28. potential: a. ptnl inherently capable of becoming or being something; in prospect 潜在的;可能的29. preserve: v. przv protect sth. from loss or destruction 保护maintain in safety from harm or danger保持30. present: v. prizent perform; introduce 放映;介绍31. profound: a. prfand of great intellectual depth;深奥的32. promote: v. prmot help or encourage something to happen 促进33. relic: n. rlk sth. that is used a long time ago and has survived into the present. 遗物; 遗迹34. restoration: n. rstren the state of being restored or reconstructed 重建35. seal: n. sil a special mark or design incised to show that sth. is genuine or officially approved 印章36. tablet: n. tblt a flat piece of clay, stone or wood suitable for bearing an inscription碑;匾37. via: prep. va, vi through; by means of 凭借36. witness: v. wtns see or observe something happen 目睹;见证Phrases:1. in terms of regarding or indicated by 从方面说来;在.方面2. on a yearly basis once a year 一年一次3. endow.with give a certain feature or quality to sth. or sb. 赋予4. kick off start officially (事件等)开始5. on the spot at the place in question 在现场6. in the meantime meanwhile 于此同时Text Understanding1.
