up in the 1930s, i always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that. i got a taste of the dream in 2001, when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. but the experience turned out to be very dull. around that time, i told my husband that i wanted to skydive. so when our retirement community announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have. i decided to write about my dream. in the essay, i wrote about my desire to skydive, stating gorge bush sr. did it at age 80. why not me? i was just 84 and in pretty good health . a year went by and i heard nothing. but then at a community party in late april 2009, they announced that i was one of the winners. i just couldnt believe it. inspired by this. i decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.on june 11,2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where i would land while i headed up in the airplane. my instructor, jay, guided me through the experience. the plane was the noisiest one i had ever been in, but i wasnt frightened-i was really just looking forward to the experience. when we reached 13,000 feet, jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. when we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that i could hardly breathe. for a second i thought, “what have i gotten myself into?” but then everything got calmer. we were in a free fall for about a minute before jay opened the parachute (降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes . being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything i have ever felt-much better than the hot air balloon. i was just enjoying it.skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. i hope other people will look at me and really one of the greatest experiences of my life. i hope other people will look at me and realize that you dont stop living just because you are 84 years old. if theres something you want to experience, look into it. if its something that is possible, make it happen.1. what happened to the author in 2001?a. she flew an airplane.b. she entered a competition.c. she went on a hot air balloon ride.d. she moved into a retirement community.2. the author mentioned george bush sr. in the essay to _. .a. build up her own reputationb. show her admiration for himc. compare their health conditiond. make her argument persuasive3. how did the author feel immediately after she jumped out of the plane?a. excited.b. scared.c. nervousd. regretful4. what did the author enjoy most when she was skydiving?a. the beautiful clouds.b. the wonderful view.c. the company of jayd. the one-minute free fallbstudents and technology in the classroomi love my blackberryits my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. i also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. despite this love of technology, i know that there are times when i need to move away from there devices(设备)and truly communicate with others.on occasion, i teach a course called history matters for a group of higher education managers. my goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. because i want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, i have a ruleno laptops, ipads, etc. when students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. theres a bit of truth to that. some students assume that i am anti-technology. theres no truth in that at all. i love technology and try to keep up with it so i can relate to my students.the real reason why i ask students to leave technology at the door is that i think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on out information for ideas. i want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. i want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.ive been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that i create. students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroomim not saying that i wont ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until i hear a really good reason for the change, im sticking to my plan. a few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.5. some of the students in the history class were unhappy with _.a. the course materialb. others misuse of technologyc. discussion topicsd. the authors class regulations6. the underlined word “engage” in para.4 probably means _. .a. exploreb. acceptc. changed. reject7. according to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may _. .a. keep students from doing independent thinkingb. encourage students to have in-depth conversationsc. help students to better understand complex themesd. affect students concentration on course evaluation8. it can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author_.a. is quite stubbornb. will give up teaching historyc. will change his teaching plan soond. values technology-free dialogues in his classc “have a nice day” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. when my friend maxie says “have a nice day” with a smile, i know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. i feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well. “have a nice day. next!” the version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. the words came out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. they are spoken at me, not to me. obviously, the concern for my day and everyone elses is the managements attempt to increase business.the expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. as soon as you hear it, you know the meeting at an end. sometimes the expression saves us when we dont know what to say. “oh, you just had a tooth out? im terribly sorry, but have a nice day”the expression can be pleasant. if a stranger says “have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you dont know has tried to be nice to you.although the use of the expression is insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. the salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. but in a strange and comfortable way, its nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really dont care all that much. while the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken the point is that people say it all the time when they like.9. how does the author understand maxies words? a. maxie shows her anxiety to the author. b. maxie really wishes the author a good day.c. maxie encourages the author to stay happy.d. maxie really worries about the authors security.10. what does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?a. the salesgirl is rude.b. the salesgirl is bored.c. the salesgirl cares about me.d. the salesgirl says the words as a routine.11. by saying “have a nice day”, a stranger may _.a. try to be polite to youb. express respect to youc. give his blessing to youd. share his pleasure with you12. according to the last paragraph, people say “have a nice day” _.a. sincerelyb. as thanksc. as a habitd. encouraginglyd i was blind, but i was ashamed of it if it was known. i refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. after all, i was a teenage girl, and i couldnt bear people to look at me and think i was not like them. i must have been a terrible danger on the roads, coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.one evening, i got off the bus about halfway home where i had to change buses, and as usual i ran into something, “im awfully sorry,” i said and stepped forward only to run into it again. when it happened a third time, i realized i had been apologizing to a lamppost. this was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. so i carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldnt stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. no one else was there and i had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.generally in this situation, because i hated showing i was blind by asking for help, i tried to guess at the sound. sometimes i would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. in the end, i usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.but on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. of course i heard plenty of buses pass, or i thought i did. but because i had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, i let them all go by. i stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. then i gave up. i decided to walk on to the next stop.13. the girl refused to ask for help because she thought_.a. she might be recognizedb. asking for help looked sillyc. she was normal and independentd. being fond blind was embarrassing14. after the girl got off the bus that evening, she_.a. began to runb. hit a person as usualc. hit a lamppost by accidentd. was caught by something15. at the request stop that evening,
