I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of languagethe way it can evoke(唤起)an emotion,a visual image,a complex idea,or a simple truth. Language _is_ the _tool _of_ my_ trade. And I use them allall the Englishes I grew up with. Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California,Ive been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others,I have described it to people as “broken” English. But I feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”,as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed,as if it lacked a certain wholeness. Ive heard other terms used,“limited English,”for example. But they seem just as bad,as if everything is limited, including peoples perceptions (认识) of the limited English speaker. I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up,my mothers “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is,because she expressed them imperfectly as if her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me:the fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her. I started writing fictions in 1985. And for reasons I wont get into today,I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with:the English she used with me,which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken” ;and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的)language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure. I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show:her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts. 1By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”,the author means that_. Ashe uses English in foreign tradeBshe is fascinated by languagesCshe works as a translatorDshe is a writer by profession2The author used to think of her mothers English as _. Aimpolite BamusingCimperfect Dpractical3Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?AAmericans do not understand broken English. BThe authors mother was not respected sometimes. CThe authors mother had positive influence on her. DBroken English always reflects imperfect thoughts. 4The author gradually realizes her mothers English is _. Awell structured Bin the old styleCeasy to translate Drich in meaningBAt the age of ten I could not figure out what this Elvis Presley guy had that the rest of us boys did not have. I mean,he had a head, two arms and two legs, just like the rest of us. About nine oclock on Saturday morning I decided to ask Eugene Correthers, one of the older boys, what it was that made this Elvis guy so special. He told me that it was Elvis wavy hair and the way he moved his body. About half an hour later all the boys in the orphanage(孤儿院) were called to the main diningroom and told we were all going to downtown Jacksonville,Florida to get a new pair of Buster Brown shoes and a haircut. That _is _when _I_ got_ this _big _idea,which _hit_ me _like _a_ ton _of _bricks. If the Elvis hair cut was the big secret, then thats what I was going to get. On the way to town I told everybody, including the matron(女管家) from the orphanage who was taking us to town, that I was going to look just like Elvis Presley and that I would learn to move around just like he did and that I would be rich and famous one day, just like him. When I got my new Buster Brown shoes,I could hardly wait for my new hair cut and now that I had my new Buster Brown shoes I would be very happy to go back to the orphanage and practice being like Elvis. We finally arrived at the big barber shop, where they cut our hair for free because we were orphans(孤儿)I looked at the barber and said,“I want an Elvis haircut. Can you make my hair like Elvis?”I asked him, with a big smile on my face. “Lets just see what we can do for you, little man,”he said. I was so happy when he started to cut my hair. Just as he started to cut my hair, the matron signed for him to come over to where she was standing. She whispered something into his ear and then he shook his head, like he was telling her “No”Then he told me they were not allowed to give us Elvis haircuts. Then I saw my hair falling onto the floor.5In the authors eyes,Elvis Presley was_. Adisgusting BadmirableCambitious Ddynamic6From the passage,we can know that_.Abuster Brown was more appealing than Elvis PresleyBan Elvis hair cut cost the orphans a lo
