The texts are written or adapted by item writersspecifically for the test and recorded in a studio to simulatereal spoken language. The listening texts are recorded oncassette or CD, and each text is heard twice. There arepauses for candidates to look at the questions and to writetheir answers. The instructions to the candidates on therecording are the same as the instructions on the questionpaper. Candidates write their answers on the question paperas they listen, and they are then given 8 minutes at the end ofthe test to transfer these answers to an answer sheet. Thecomplete listening test, including time for the transfer ofanswers, takes about 30 minutes.Listening is a language skill which should be practised fromthe early stages of learning English. The teachers first resource is the listening material includedin the course book. These listening tasks should be made useof regularly in order to build up the confidence which comesfrom listening to a variety of speakers talking about a range oftopics. A major advantage of using taped material is thatteacher and students are in control of the number of times aparticular listening text is played, which should be varied.Sometimes students will need several repeats before they areable to extract the information required by a particularlistening task, but at other times they should try to see howmuch they can understand after just one hearing. In addition to making regular use of course book materials,Page 31teachers should take every opportunity to maximise studentsexposure to authentic spoken English. Even with beginnerlevel students, English should be used as much as possible asthe language of classroom management. Thus from an earlystage students become used to following instructions inEnglish and to extracting relevant information from spokendiscourse.Other sources of authentic listening material include: films, television, videos and DVDs, songs, the internet, clubs, hotels, youth hostels, airports, teachers of English and anyother speakers of English such as tourists, tourist guides, friends and family. In listening to real-life spoken English, students should beencouraged to develop listening strategies such as pickingout important information from redundant material, anddeducing meaning from context by focusing on importantkey words and ignoring unimportant unfamiliar terms.Students should also become familiar with the task types inthe KET Listening paper, and make sure they know how torecord their answers on the answer sheet (page 47).Candidates should tell the supervisor of the listening test assoon as possible if they have difficulty hearing the recording. It is important to let the supervisor know this at the beginningof the recording before the listening test proper begins.Part 1In Part 1, candidates are tested on their ability to identifysimple factual information in five separate shortconversational exchanges. The short conversations are eitherbetween friends or relatives, or between a member of thepublic and a shop assistant, booking office clerk, etc. Theinformation focused on in these dialogues is, for example, prices, numbers, times, dates, locations, directions, shapes, sizes, weather, descriptions of people and current actions. On the question paper, the candidates see a simple questionand three multiple-choice options based on pictures ordrawings. There are five questions in Part 1.Page 32Part 2In Part 2, candidates are tested on their ability to identifysimple factual information in a longer conversation. Theconversation is an informal one between two people whoknow each other. The topic will be one of personal interest tothe speakers, for example daily life, travel, occupationalactivities, free time activities, etc.Candidates show their understanding of the conversation bymatching two lists of items, for example people with the foodthey like to eat, or days of the week with activities.Part 3In Part 3, candidates are also tested on their ability to identifysimple factual information. The listening text is usually aninformal conversation between two people who know eachother about a topic of personal interest to the speakers. It issometimes a transactional exchange, e.g. a person makingenquiries in a travel agents. In this part, candidates show their understanding of theconversation by answering five multiple-choice questions, each with three options.Parts 4 and 5In Parts 4 and 5, candidates are tested on their ability toextract specific factual information from a dialogue ormonologue and write it down. The dialogue or monologue isin an informal or a neutral context, for example in shops, offices, etc. A monologue may be a recorded message. Theinformation to be extracted is of a practical nature, forexample opening times, entrance fees, etc.Candidates are asked to complete a memo, message or noteson the question paper by extracting information from thelistening text and writing it down. Information to be writtendown consists of numbers, times, dates, prices, spellings andwords. In each case, candidates are required to write downone or two words or numbers. Completely accurate spellingis not required, except where a name has been spelt out inthe listening text or when it is a simple high-frequency word.L I S T E N I N G S A M P L E PA P E R 1Candidate NameUNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE ESOL EXAMINATIONSEnglish for Speakers of Other LanguagesKEY ENGLISH TESTPAPER 1 ListeningSAMPLE PAPER 1CandidateCentre NumberNumberAdditional materials: Answer sheet Soft clean eraser Soft pencil (type B or HB is recommended)Approx. 30 minutes(including 8 minutes transfer time)TIMEApprox. 30 minutes (including 8 minutes transfer time)INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATESWrite your name, Centre number and candidate number in the spaces at the top of this page.
