0908翻译:故乡 (鲁迅)Translation: Hometown (Lu Xun)(translated by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)第一部分:回故乡Part 1: Returning to Hometown-我冒了严寒,回到相隔二千余里,别了二十余年的故乡去。I braved through freezing cold to travel over two thousand plus miles back to my hometown which I left twenty some odd years ago.-时候既然是深冬,It was deep into winter at that time. When I approached my hometown, the sky turned gloomy. Cold wind blowing into the boat cabin made a swooshing sound. Looking out through a gap I saw underneath the yellowish-gray sky were several desolate uninhabited villages at various distances without any sign of life. Overpoweringly my heart sank at these sights. Oh, this was not the hometown I had always remembered for the last twenty-odd years.-我所记得的故乡全不如此。The hometown I could remember was completely different from this. It was a much better hometown then. But if I had to recall its beauties and describe all its good things, then I had no images or words for them. Vaguely it was something that resembled this. So I tried to vindicate myself by saying the hometown was always like this. Even though there was no step-up, yet it wasnt as melancholy as I felt. It was only that my frame of mind had changed since I wasnt in the best of mood on this trip home.-我这次是专为了别他而来的。In this trip I came for the specific purpose to say goodbye. Our old mansion occupied by clan families for many years had been jointly sold to a different clan. Delivery of the premises was within that year. Therefore I had to hurry back before the first month of the next lunar year to bid farewell for good to my accustomed old house. Also I would relocate my family from my familiar hometown to a faraway place where I was making a living. Early morning on the next day I arrived at the doorstep of my home. Broken-off stems of withered grass on roof tiles were wavering in the wind, and that could explain why this old house was doomed to change hands. Several clan families had already moved out and so the place was quiet. I arrived outside our family unit and my mother had already come out to welcome me. Also dashing out was my eight-year-old nephew Little Hong. My mother was very happy but also seemed to be holding back much saddened feeling. Under the circumstances, I just sat down, rested a bit and drank tea without talking about relocating for the time being. Little Hong never saw me before and he just stood facing me at a fair distance. We finally talked about relocation of our family. I said I already leased an apartment and bought a few pieces of furniture. I suggested we should sell all the wooden articles at home and add on more pieces along the way. Also all the luggage had more or less been gathered together. Since it was inconvenient to move the wooden articles, therefore a small portion of them had already been sold but we couldnt fetch decent prices. Mother said: “You rest for one or two days, visit some relatives and then we are ready to go.”-“是的。”“Yes!” I replied.-“还有闰土,“Also there is Run Tu. Every time he came to our house he always asked about you. He wanted to see you. I already told him the approximate date of your arrival. At that moment, my mind suddenly flashed out a peculiar image: Hanging high up in the deep, blue sky was a golden full-moon, and down below at a sandy beach by seaside was an endless stretch of dark-green watermelon growth. In the middle of all these was an eleven to twelve year old youngster wearing a silver ring at the neck and holding a steel pitchfork in his hand. He was stabbing hard at a “cha”. The “cha” twisted its body around and escaped from between his legs. This youngster was Run Tu. When I knew him, he was only ten and some odd years old and that was thirty years ago. At that time my father was still alive, and our family was quite well off. I was a young master. That year it was our familys turn to host the annual rituals in paying homage to the clans ancestors. I heard our turn only came once every thirty years and we were very serious about handling things right. In paying homage to likenesses of ancestors in the first lunar month, offering items were plentiful and utensils were exquisite. Many participants came to pay their respect and we had to guard against pilferage of offering utensils.我家只有一个忙月(我们这里给人做工的分三种:Our family only had one seasonal worker (There were three types of workers in our area. Full-time workers worked for specific families all year round. Short-term workers worked on a daily basis. Seasonal workers grew their own crops and worked for specific families during New Year, festivals and rental collection periods). The worker was overly busy and asked my father if he could ask his son Run Tu to watch the offering utensils. My father gave his permission. I was very happy because I had heard the name Run Tu for quite some time and also knew he was about my age. He was born in a leap month. Of the five fundamental elements in Chinese occultism he was deficient in earth and therefore his father called him Run Tu, which literally meant “extra earth”. He knew how to set traps in catching birds.-我于是日日盼望新年,So every day I was looking forward to New Year day. When New Year arrived, Run Tu would be here as well. The end of year finally came, and one day my mother told me Run Tu was here. I ran over to look. He was in the kitchen with a purplish round-face, a small felt hat on his head, and a shiny silver-ring on his neck. His father loved him dearly and was afraid he might die early. So he made a pledge in front of Buddha and gods that he would keep him under control with a ring. He was generally shy with strangers but not with me. When there was nobody around, he talked to me and we got acquainted within half a day.-我们那时候不知道谈些什么,I didnt know what we talked about at that time. All I could remember was Run Tu was very happy and said that after he came to the city he saw many things which he had never seen before.-第二日,我便要他捕鸟。他说:The next day I wanted him to catch birds. He said:-“这不能。“It doesnt work with this weather. We need a heavy snowfall. After snow has fallen, we would clear out a space on sandy ground. Then we would use a short stick to prop up a big bamboo tray and scatter some blighted grain underneath. We would watch and when birds come to feed, we would pull the string tied to the stick from distance and birds would be trapped in the bamboo tray. There are all kinds of birds, such as pheasant, hazel grouse, wood pigeon and blue-rump Pitta.”-我于是又很盼望下雪。So I wished for snowfall.-闰土又对我说:Run Tu also said to me:-“现在太冷,你夏天到我们这里来。我们日里到海边捡贝壳去,“Its too cold now. In summer you come to our place and we will collect seashells at seaside during the day. Some of them are red and green in color. There are also small seashells nicknamed “ghost-busters” and “bodhisattva hands”. At night, Dad and I would go to guard watermelons, and you can come along.”-“管贼么?”“Are you guarding against thieves?”-“不是。 “No. Around our place when passers-by get thirsty and pick one watermelon to eat, we do not consider that to be stealing. We are guarding against badgers, porcupines and “chas”. Under the moon when you hear rustling sounds then you know “chas” are feeding on watermelons. You grab a pitchfork and tiptoe over ”-我那时并不知道这所谓猹的是怎么一件东西At that time I didnt know what the so-called “cha” really was. Even now I still havent found out. Only somehow I imagine it was the size of a small dog and very ferocious.-“他不咬人么?”“Would it bite people?” “You have the pitchfork. When you get there and see the “cha” then you jab at it. This animal is very smart. It would run towards your direction and flee between your legs. All along I was unaware of all those interesting new things in this world, such as multi-colored seashells at seaside and risky adventures associated with watermelons. Before I only knew watermelons were sold in fruit-stores. -“我们沙地里,潮汛要来的时候,就有许多跳鱼儿只是跳,都有青蛙似的两个脚”“When spring tide arrives, many mudskippers just jump around in sandy ground and they have two frog-like legs”-阿! Oh, in Run Tus mind there were countless atypical things unknown to my regular friends. They wouldnt know certain matters because when Run Tu was at seaside, they had limited visions just like me in looking up to the sky within four corners of courtyards.-可惜正月过去了,闰土须回家里去,But regrettably once the first lunar month passed, Run Tu had to go home. I was so rattled I cried my eyes out. He cried too and refused to leave by hiding in the kitchen. But eventually his father dragged him away. Afterwards he asked his father to bring to me a package of seashells and cute-looking bird feathers. I also sent him gifts once or twice but we never met again.-现在我的母亲提起了他,我这儿时的记忆,忽而全都闪电似的苏生过来,似乎看到了我的美丽的故乡了。Now that my mother mentioned him, all the memories during the times when I was little flashed back as if my beautiful hometown came alive in front of my eyes again. How is he?”-“他? Things are not going too well with him.” While Mother was speaking she looked out of the house and said: “Those people are here again. They said they were here to purchase wooden articles but they may conveniently sneak them away. I have to go and keep an eye on them.”-母亲站起身,出去了。Mother stood up and walked out. Then I heard voices of a few women outside the door. In waving Little Hong over to my front, I chatted with him. I asked if he knew how to write and whether he was willing to travel away from home.-“我们坐火车去么?”“Are you going by train?”-“我们坐火车去。”“We are going by train.”-“船呢?”“How about taking the boat?”-“先坐船,”“We take the boat first.”-“哈!这模样了!“Ha, youve come to looking like this now!胡子这么长了!”Your beard has grown to be so very long.” I was taken aback and in looking up, I saw a fifty and some odd years old woman with high cheekbones and thin lips standing in front of me. Her two hands were resting on her hips. She was not wearing a slip. Her legs were spread out which made her look like a pointed-arm compass of a pantograph. I was stunned.-“不认识了么?“Dont you recognize me?我还抱过你咧!”I hugged you before!”-我愈加愕然了。I was even more shocked. Fortunately my mother came in and said: -“他多年出门,统忘却了。“He has gone for many years and forgotten everything.你该记得罢,”You should know that.” My mother turned towards me and said: “She is Second Yang Sister and she lives at the kitty corner from us. She runs a tofu shop.”-哦,我记得了。Oh, then I remembered. When I was small, Second Yang Sister sat around all day at the tofu s
