The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as honor help you create this life of good feelings.Heres an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerks mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky(偷偷摸摸的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we dont tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerks attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And its easy to think and act honorably again when were happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once its started, its easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.41. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our_. A. self-respect B. sneaky excitement C. financial rewards D. friendly relationship42. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to_. A. lying B. stealing C. cheating D. advertising43. The phrase bringing the error to the clerks attention(in Para. 5) means_. A. telling the truth to the clerkB. offering advice to the clerk C. blaming the clerk for the error D. reminding the clerk of the charged item44. How will we feel if we let the clerk know the mistake? A. Well be very excited.B. Well feel unfortunate. C. Well have a sense of honor.D. Well feel sorry for the clerk.45. What is the article mainly about? A. How to live truthfully. B. Importance of peacefulness. C. Ways of gaining self-respect.D. Happiness through honorable actions.BSome say college is wasted on the young. So many of us look back at our own college years and realize what we could have done differently to make the most of them. While we cant go back, we certainly can offer our sons and daughters our best advice to help them make the right choices in college. Hopefully, they will have fewer regrets than we do. Following are five guidelines parents can share with their college-bound kids to put the whole experience in perspective.EDUCATION IS YOUR FIRST PRIORITY As soon as you arrive on campus, there will be competing interests. Feel free to check them out but always remember that you are there first and foremost for your education. Go to class prepared and on time. Be engaged during class. Make sure your professor knows you and realizes that you care.BE RESPONSIBLE There are many layers of responsibility. Do what you say you will do and, if you cant, own up to it early and communicate clearly. But being responsible isnt just about meeting your commitments; it is also about taking care of you, your body, and your friends. For example, more than 1800 college students die annually from alcohol-related injuries. Look out for yourself and other people. Make moderate, sensible decisions so you arent reeling from the consequences later.TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY Incredible opportunities will present themselves: studying abroad, interning at a unique place, trying new things. Dont let fear prevent you from taking advantage of them. There may never be so much time or as many resources devoted to your betterment again in your life. Say yes to opportunities that will help you grow.FIND AND BE A MENTOR Some of the best lessons available to us can come outside of the classroom in the form of a mentor. One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor. Early on, find someone on campus who you feel can help you grow and develop a relationship with him or her. Also find someone for you to mentor. You will reinforce and enrich your own learning experience by teaching someone else.GET THE JOB DONEIt is natural to occasionally feel you want to quit, when it makes more sense to you to go find a full-time job. Resist that urge. As Jocelyn Negron-Rios, a mother of two, who is currently completing her degree, advises, No matter how difficult it seems, keep at it because however insurmountable(难以克服的) it feels now, multiply that by 10,000 and that is how it feels when you are in your thirties with a full-time job and a family and are trying to pursue a degree.46. According to the passage, the most important thing for college students is _.A. taking part in different activitiesB. working hard to get a degreeC. seizing every chance to try new thingsD. improving themselves by learning from the others47. Which of the following about college life is true? A. Passing on what youve learned in college can help you enrich your learning experience. B. Make sure that you are responsible for yourself rather than others. C. Professors will not assess your performances in class but the grades you get in exams. D. You can make full use of the opportunity whenever you want.48. What can we infer from the words said by Jocelyn in the last paragraph? A. Persistence is the key to success when you meet with difficulties in your learning process. B. It is better if you gain more working experience before you finish your education. C. As long as you work hard, you can gain a degree even when you are in your thirties. D. Youth is the best time to learn since you have fewer burdens.49. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To give some rules for the college students. B. To call on the students to make full use of college years. C. To summarize some tips for parents to share with their children. D. To analyze the benefits and difficulties of college life. CWhy would people not be motivated to make changes that could improve their life? And the answer is: Its a trick question. People are motivated to do whats good for them. The problem is that “whats good for them” is often nowhere near as obvious as it soundsand that, even if they can figure out what that is, they may not believe that it will be possible for them to do it. Simply put, at the heart of the myth of being “unmotivated” lies the frustrating, demoralizing(令人士气低落的), completely human state of ambivalence(矛盾心理).Imagine you begin to realize that something about your current behavior or situation might be a problem for you. You start thinking about making a changeand almost immediately you think about what making that change would cost you. Sure, losing weight and getting into shape will improve your health, give you more energy and zest(热情), enhance your self-esteem. But it may also require you to give up sleep to work out in the morning, or lose precious time with family in the evenings; you may have to give up some of your favorite foods (and the comfort they bring) or tolerate feeling hungry (and the discomfort it causes). When it comes to important life decisions, just about every option a person is faced with has costs (real and perceived意识上的) as well as benefits. To resolve your ambivalence you have to believe that the benefits of pursuing a path dramatically outweigh the coststhat the advantages of one option are clearly superior to the advantages of others. But what do I mean by “dramatically outweighs”? How superior is “clearly superior”?Imagine that I told you there existed a special pill that, if taken once a day, would cause you to live to be 100 and never be sick a day in your life. Would you take it? Of coursethe benefits of the pill far outweigh the minor inconvenience. But now imagine I told you that to receive the pill you would have to agree never to see any of the people you love again. Would you accept this bargain?A long, healthy life is something that almost anyone would wanteven make sacrifices for. Yet most of us value the people we love even more than we value our healthand when competing options provoke(引发) a conflict of values, you will almost always choose the option that you care about the most, even if it does bring costs of its own or seems wrong-headed to the people around you.But lets imagine youve decided that a particular change would bring many benefits and few costs and that it would be completely consistent with your values. Can we anticipate(预见) with certainty that you will take action to make that change? Not necessarily. If you expected your efforts to fail, the chances are very good thatyou wouldnt even bother to try. And why should you?Resolving ambivalence requires not only knowing the path that is right for you but also feeling confident about pursuing itbelieving you can succeed at accomplishing what you hope to accomplish. If you believe you have a problem, but dont believe theres anything youre capable of doing to solve it, you have only two options: denial or despair. That is, you can tell yourself that you really dont have a problem (or that its not so bad) or you can face the idea that the problem is really serious but completely unsolvable and be consumed by hopelessness.50. People sometimes are “unmotivated” about making changes that could improve their life because_. A. they dont think changes are good for them B. They dont know exactly what is good for them C. They are stopped from doing that by the surroundings D. They lack some guidance and support51. According to the passage, losing weight and getting into shape might means the followings EXCEPET_. A. ruining family relationship B. building up your self-esteem C. giving up favorite foods and feeling hungry D. gaining more energy and zest52. From paragraph 5 and 6 we can learn_. A. one must be very cautious in making a change. B. a person will choose the option that he values the most C. the difference between the benefits and costs D. a person will definitely make a change when the benefits
