Sowehaveetocashthischeck-acheckthatwillgiveusupondemandtherichesoffreedomandthesecurityofjustice. WehavealsoetothishallowedspottoremindAmericaofthefierceurgencyofnow.Thisisnotimetoengageintheluxuryofcoolingoffortotakethetranquilizingdrugofgradualism.Nowisthetimetorisefromthedarkanddesolatevalleyofsegregationtothesunlitpathofracialjustice.NowisthetimetoopenthedoorsofopportunitytoallofGodschildren.Nowisthetimetoliftournationfromthequicksandsofracialinjusticetothesolidrockofbrotherhood. Leteverynationknow,whetheritwishesuswellorill,thatweshallpayanyprice,bearanyburden,meetanyhardship,supportanyfriend,opposeanyfoe,toassurethesurvivalandthesuessofliberty.Thismuchwepledge-andmore. Tothoseoldallieswhoseculturalandspiritualoriginsweshare,wepledgetheloyaltyoffaithfulfriends.Unitedthereislittlewecannotdoinahostofcooperativeventures.Dividedthereislittlewecando-forwedarenotmeetapowerfulchallengeatoddsandsplitasunder.Tothosenewstateswhomweweletotheranksofthefree,wepledgeourwordthatoneformofcolonialcontrolshallnothavepassedawaymerelytobereplacedbyafarmoreirontyranny.Weshallnotalwaysexpecttofindthemsupportingourview.Butweshallalwayshopetofindthemstronglysupportingtheirownfreedom-andtorememberthat,inthepast,thosewhofoolishlysoughtpowerbyridingthebackofthetigerendedupinside. Tothosepeopleinthehutsandvillagesofhalftheglobestrugglingtobreakthebondsofmassmisery,wepledgeourbesteffortstohelpthemhelpthemselves,forwhateverperiodisrequired-notbecausetheCommunistsmaybedoingit,notbecauseweseektheirvotes,butbecauseitisright.Ifafreesocietycannothelpthemanywhoarepoor,itcannotsavethefewwhoarerich. Tooursisterrepublicssouthofourborder,weofferaspecialpledge:toconvertourgoodwordsintogooddeeds,inanewallianceforprogress,toassistfreemenandfreegovernmentsincastingoffthechainsofpoverty.Butthispeacefulrevolutionofhopecannotbeethepreyofhostilepowers.LetallourneighborsknowthatweshalljoinwiththemtoopposeaggressionorsubversionanywhereintheAmericas.Andleteveryotherpowerknowthatthishemisphereintendstoremainthemasterofitsownhouse. Tothatworldassemblyofsovereignstates,theUnitedNations,ourlastbesthopeinanagewheretheinstrumentsofwarhavefaroutpacedtheinstrumentsofpeace,werenewourpledgeofsupport-topreventitfrombeingmerelyaforumforinvective,tostrengthenitsshieldofthenewandtheweak,andtoenlargetheareainwhichitswritmayrun.Finally,tothosenationswhowouldmakethemselvesouradversary,weoffernotapledgebutarequest:thatbothsidesbeginanewthequestforpeace,beforethedarkpowersofdestructionunleashedbyscienceengulfallhumanityinplannedoraidentalself-destruction. Wedarenottemptthemwithweakness.Foronlywhenourarmsaresufficientbeyonddoubtcanwebecertainbeyonddoubtthattheywillneverbeemployed.Butneithercantwogreatandpowerfulgroupsofnationstakefortfromourpresentcourse-bothsidesoverburdenedbythecostofmodernweapons,bothrightlyalarmedbythesteadyspreadofthedeadlyatom,yetbothracingtoalterthatuncertainbalanceofterrorthatstaysthehandofmankindsfinalwar. Soletusbeginanew-rememberingonbothsidesthatcivilityisnotasignofweakness,andsincerityisalwayssubjecttoproof.Letusnevernegotiateoutoffear,butletusneverfeartonegotiate. Letbothsidesexplorewhatproblemsuniteusinsteadofbelaboringthoseproblemswhichdivideus.Letbothsides,forthefirsttime,formulateseriousandpreciseproposalsfortheinspectionandcontrolofarms,andbringtheabsolutepowertodestroyothernationsundertheabsolutecontrolofallnations. Letbothsidesseektoinvokethewondersofscienceinsteadofitsterrors.Togetherletusexplorethestars,conquerthedeserts,eradicatedisease,taptheoceandepths,andencouragetheartsandmerce. Letbothsidesunitetoheed,inallcornersoftheearth,themandofIsaiah-toundotheheavyburdens,andtolettheoppressedgofree.And,ifabeachheadofcooperationmaypushbackthejungleofsuspicion,letbothsidesjoinincreatinganewendeavor-notanewbalanceofpower,butanewworldoflaw-wherethestrongarejust,andtheweaksecure,andthepeacepreserved.Allthiswillnotbefinishedinthefirstonehundreddays.Norwillitbefinishedinthefirstonethousanddays;norinthelifeofthisAdministration;norevenperhapsinourlifetimeonthispla.Butletusbegin. Inyourhands,myfellowcitizens,morethanmine,willrestthefinalsuessorfailureofourcourse.Sincethiscountrywasfounded,eachgenerationofAmericanshasbeensummonedtogivetestimonytoitsnationalloyalty.ThegravesofyoungAmericanswhoansweredthecalltoservicesurroundtheglobe.Nowthetrumpetsummonsusagain-notasacalltobeararms,thougharmsweneed-notasacalltobattle,thoughembattledweare-butacalltobeartheburdenofalongtwilightstruggle,yearinandyearout,rejoicinginhope;patientintribulation,astruggleagainstthemonenemiesofman:tyranny,poverty,disease,andwaritself.Canweforgeagainsttheseenemiesagrandandglobalalliance,NorthandSouth,EastandWest,thatcanassureamorefruitfullifeforallmankind?Willyoujoininthathistoriceffort?Inthelonghistoryoftheworld,onlyafewgenerationshavebeengrantedtheroleofdefendingfreedominitshourofmaximumdanger.Idonotshrinkfromthisresponsibility-Iweleit.Idonotbelievethatanyofuswouldexchangeplaceswithanyotherpeopleoranyothergeneration.Theenergy,thefaith,thedevotionwhichwebringtothisendeavorwilllightourcountryandallwhoserveit.Andtheglowfromthatfirecantrulylighttheworld.Andso,myfellowAmericans,asknotwhatyourcountrycandoforyou;askwhatyoucandoforyourcountry.Myfellowcitizensoftheworld,asknotwhatAmericawilldoforyou,butwhattogetherwecandoforthefreedomofman. TheThanksgivingtraditionofpassionandhumilitydatesbacktotheearliestdaysofoursociety.Andthroughtheyears,ourdeepestgratitudehasoftenbeeninspiredbythemostdifficulttimes.Almostfourcenturiesago,thepilgrimssetasidetimetothankGodaftersufferingthroughabitterwinter.GeorgeWashingtonheldThanksgivingduringatryingstayatValleyForge.AndPresidentLincolnrevivedtheThanksgivingtraditioninthemidstofacivilwar. Thepastyearhasbroughtmanychallengestoournation,andAmericanshavemeteveryonewithenergy,optimismandfaith.Afterliftingoureconomyfromarecession,manufacturersandentrepreneursarecreatingjobsagain.Volunteersfromacrossthecountrycametogethertohelphurricanevictimsrebuild.AndwhenthechildrenofBeslan,Russiasufferedabrutalterroristattack,theworldsawAmericasgenerousheartinanoutpouringofpassionandrelief. Thegreatestchallengesofourtimehaveetothemenandwomenwhoprotectournation.Werefortunatetohavededicatedfirefightersandpoliceofficerstokeepourstreetssafe.Weregratefulforthehomelandsecurityandintelligencepersonnelwhospendlonghoursonfaithfulwatch.Andwegivethankstothemenandwomenofourmilitarywhoareservingwithcourageandskill,andmakingourentirenationproud. Likegenerationsbeforethem,todaysarmedforceshaveliberatedcaptivepeoplesandshownpassionforthesufferinganddeliveredhopetotheoppressed.Inthepastyear,theyhavefoughttheterroristsabroadsothatwedonothavetofacethoseenemieshereathome.Theyvecapturedabrutaldictator,aidedlastmonthshistoricelectioninAfghanistan,andhelpsetIraqonthepathtodemocracy.
