文档简介

Mark Twain whose real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. In 1835, he was born in Florida. After his fathers death, he once worked for his brother, and he also did the job as a printer and a river-boat pilot. In 1863, He adopted the pen name Mark Twain which means twelve feet deep, which means the water is enough to float any steamboat, its very safe. In 1870, he married Olivia Langdon, with whom he had four children, but three died before they reached their twenties. In 1885, he lost a large fortune because of unwise investments, so he went to a lecturing tour of the world. And later he was awarded the honorary degree by both Yale university and Oxford university. And in 1910, he died in New York.Broadly, it is defined as the faithful representation of reality, its a literary technique practiced by many schools of writing. Although its a technique, it also denotes a particular kind of subject matter, especially the representation of middle-class life. In American literature, the term realism encompasses the period of time from the Civil War to the turn of the centuryLocal color is influenced both by romanticism and realism. The author frequently looks away from ordinary life to distant lands, strange customs, or exotic scenes. Their writings focus on the life of a small, well defined region. The characteristic setting is usually the isolated small town.Humor: Mark Twains humor is remarkable. Actually, he originally wanted to be a serious artist, but the hard life drove him to write humor. For him, humor was a means of showing his emotions of dissatisfaction in a difficult world. However, his humor is not just for amusement, but as a sharp weapon to criticize the evilness of society, which contained sorrow and satire.Colloquial style: It has something to do with ease and freedom in the use of language. And the structure of the sentence is simple, direct, and fluent, which maintains the rhythm of the words group of speech and the intonations of the speaking voice. We can say that its typical of spoken language of people from the lower class.Hemingway said that All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry FinnIt tells a story about the United States before the Civil War, around 1850, the story took place along the Mississippi Rive. It relates the story of the escape of Jim from slavery and, whats more important, how Huck Finn, floated along with him and helped him as best he could, changed his mind, his prejudice about black people, and came to accept Jim as a man and as a close friend as well. At the conclusion of the book, Huck decided to head off into new territory since he didnt like the civilized society, The story is written in the first person with Huck narrating. It is in the past tense as a recent perspective. As narrator, Huck describes the story in the vernacular which means in his natural, everyday voice. Mark Twain worked hard on Hucks speech to make the language sound like Hucks talk.Because Huck is not very educated, so the language should be very colloquial or even sometimes ungrammatical. The tone in the story is humorous and informal, but in much of the observations on society, Mark Twain is often critical. Although the title of the book focuses on the adventure, the primary theme of the novel is the conflict between civilization and natural life. Throughout the novel, Twain seems to suggest that the uncivilized way of life is more desirable and morally superior. The theme of slavery is the most well known aspect of this novel. In Mark Twains personal and public life, he was an anti-slavery. He encouraged the readers to feel sympathy and empathy for Jim. Often, Mark Twain used the book and Hucks character to voice his own ideas about society./campbelld/amlit/realism.htm/cs/chronology/a/aa_mtwainchrono.htm/view/9e7250bafd0a79563c1e72b7.html/home/canada/work/allam/18661913/lit/twain.htm/wiki/American_realism /view/d09c0feb81c758f5f61f674f.html/article/84/9
