They say that, a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earths resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The worlds population will have doubled, and will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left. Other people believe that man can get used to new circumstances (环境) very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their view, will people be living in a hundred years time? One builder believes that man will move on the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramid shaped building, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea, we will give the farmers more land to grow crops. As for oil, people will no longer need it: they will be heating their homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are a lot under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources. What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be wearing? How will people be travelling? Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that shops will no longer exist by the year 3000. Computers will have replaced shops, and people will order goods from home. People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric (纤维) that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. As for travel, the experts say most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be travelling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.46. Pessimists believe that in the future _. A. the seas and oceans will be full of houses B. well have run out of most of the oceans resources C. we will have enough fish to eat from the seas D. we will have to wear masks because well have made the air so dirty47. Other people have suggested that in the future _. A. all the land will be too polluted to be cropped on B. pyramids will be the most commonly used houses C. people will be using the power from the sun instead of oil D. we will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans48. Scientists have made the predictions except _. A. electric cars will be going along the streets continuously B. the resources under the oceans are nearly exhausted C. people will go to school and hospital in the same building D. people wont suffer from cold or hot any longer49. We can infer from the passage that _in the future. A. well buy goods with no money B. all the activities will be carried out in the sea C. clothes will be light and thin D. there will be no cars50. Which is the best title of the passage? A. A Hundred Years from Now B. Pessimistic and Optimistic Ideas about the Future C. The Future of the EarthD. The Development of ScienceB How do you see the environment-friendly city of the future? Will we be living underground, in smaller houses or in tall towers? What sort of energy wall we use to run our homes? How much of our .waste will be recycled? What will future city transport systems be like? Will more people work from home? These are just a few of the questions which modern city planners are faced with.Architects (建筑师) are starting to move away from the traditional concrete and steel buildings. They are completely rethinking urban architecture and are coming up with exciting new environment-friendly buildings, which are constructed with a wider variety of materials. The Freedom Tower project in New York is an example of a futuristic (未来派的)skyscraper. On the top of the building there will be a wind farm which will produce 20% of the buildings electricity. An environment-friendly housing development in London consists of 82 fiats and houses combined with work units, shops and recreation facilities. Recycled or renewable materials are used in its construction. Solar panels provide hot water while heating and electricity are produced by an on-site power system, which combines alternative energy and a wood burner. Every house is south facing and is designed to feel spacious and light and each has a roof garden. There is a plan to provide electric cars for residents to use. But these are isolated building projects which will have little positive impact on the environment unless the technology is used on a large scale. A much bigger issue is how we can improve our existing towns and buildings and make them more environment-friendly. Visions of the Future are a competition, which is open to students of all age groups at schools around the country. The aim of the competition is to develop awareness among young people of issues linked to modem city life, with a strong focus on the environment. This fun education project will also help students develop useful skills such as team work and problem solving. Students will work in teams of four and they will present an environment-friendly project for the improvement of a part of their own town or city. They must consider the following issues: buildings, transport, recreation facilities and basic services. The projects must reach us by 1st May. The winning team will receive a cheque for $2,000. The ten best projects will be posted on our website on 30th June. If you are interested in taking part in the competition, complete the online application form and send it to . We will send you a resource pack containing rules, instructions and useful preparation tips and techniques.51. In the city of the future, new buildings will _.
