A Visit to Dachen IslandsLast summer, the weather was hotter than usual, so some of my friends and I decided to go to the Dachen Islands and spend a few days there. On our way, we looked out of the ships windows and saw many little green islands on the sea. With a loud whistle the ship went into the harbor. Through the windows, I saw many fishing boats sailing here and there. They went out of the harbor with hope and came back with loads of fish. On the market I saw a lot of baskets full of fish. The next day, we all got up early and went to the beach near the hotel to watch the sun rising. We looked to the east. The clouds were reddish, and then turned bright red. Soon the sun slowly appeared and began to rise. The sky around the sun was very bright and the sun looked like a big ball. The sight was so beautiful that we would never forget. Not only is the scenery beautiful on the Dachen Islands, but also the people there are very kind.During our stay we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and ate a lot of sea food. To our disappointment, we had to leave the islands, but well always remember this trip and the people there. When we arrived at the great wall, we climbed up many steps. There were many people on the way up to the great wall. There were many foreigners too. When we got to the top, we could see the wall long and far. It was really magnificient. I enjoyed my journey to the great wall very much. Visit to the Dentist By Phyllis NaegeliKerry was on her way to the dentists office with her mother. At her last check up the dentist found a cavity in one of her molars. During the drive, Kerry was very quiet. As they arrived and parked the car, Kerry asked, Mom, why do they have to fix my cavity? It doesnt hurt. A cavity is a hole in your tooth, if it doesnt get filled it will hurt, answered Mom. Come on, lets go in. Kerry and her mom went into the building where the dentist had her office. They were greeted at the front desk then sat down in the waiting room. Soon, a woman came to get Kerry. Hi, Kerry, Im Jean, Ill be helping Dr. Hicks fill your cavity today, said the woman. Jean and Kerry walked down the hall to the exam room. Inside was a large chair with a mirror over it. Kerry sat down and tried to get comfortable. Are you O.K.? asked Jean. Yes, just a little scared, said Kerry. It will be fine, Kerry, said Jean. Dr. Hicks is a very good dentist. Just then Dr. Hicks came into the room. She greeted Kerry and Jean then looked over Kerrys chart. When she was ready, she sat down next to Kerry. Kerry, you have a cavity in one of your molars, said Dr. Hicks. I know, said Kerry. Why does it have to be filled if it doesnt hurt? It may not hurt today, Kerry, because it is only a small cavity. If we fill it now it wont get any bigger. If we leave it alone, it will grow and could cause bigger problems. It could get infected. Its best to take care of it while it is small, then it wont cause more trouble for you, said Dr. Hicks. O.K., said Kerry, I guess its the best thing to do. Dr. Hicks put Kerrys chair back and asked her to open wide. She gave Kerry a shot to numb her mouth. The shot was quick and almost painless. Kerry began to relax. In a few minutes the left side of her face felt numb. I think, were ready to begin, said Dr. Hicks. Kerry opened her mouth and Dr. Hicks drilled around the outside of the cavity. Kerry didnt feel anything. Then Dr. Hicks filled the cavity with a special tooth colored material. Before long, Dr. Hicks was done. How do you feel? asked Dr. Hicks. I feel pretty good, said Kerry, except my mouth is still numb. That will wear off soon, said Dr. Hicks. Jean is going to go over the care of your teeth with you. This will help you to prevent more cavities from happening. I have another patient to see, it was nice to see you, Kerry. Bye, Dr. Hicks, said Kerry. Jean showed Kerry a set of false teeth, Here is the tooth that had a cavity, she began pointing to the third molar from the back. Somehow, you missed brushing well in that area. Bacteria were able to form plaque which caused your cavity. Its very important to clean all of your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and using a gentle motion for at least two to three minutes is the best way to remove plaque and food from your teeth. I do brush twice a day, said Kerry. But I dont know if I brush for two or three minutes. Using a timer can help you make sure you brush long enough. Its also a good idea to use a soft tooth brush to clean your teeth. Being gentle with your teeth is better than scrubbing hard. The top of your teeth have enamel that can wear away from too much scrubbing. Also, you only need a small amount of toothpaste. Please, be careful not to swallow too much of the toothpaste. The fluoride is good to brush on your teeth but not the best thing to eat, Jean said with a smile. A Visit to a Restaurant Last week, my friends and I decided to eat at the Good Luck Restaurant. I knew it was a new restaurant, it has been opened for only two months, but a lot of people go there for meals, so I thought the food must be delicious. We booked a table for four, and got there at 18:30. As we went in, a waitress with a friendly smile took us to the table. We sat at the table and she gave us a really long menu, we had some trouble to decide what to have. I recommended fish, because I thought it was nourishing and it could easily keep us from getting too fat. Kate was fond of dessert, something sweet. Peter preferred to have beef and jack was excited that he had no idea at that moment. At last, we chose Assorted Cold Dishes, Hot & Sour Cucumber, Cashew Nuts and Salted Pork for our starters, Fried Whole Fish with Sweet & Sour Sauce, Shredded Beef with Onion, Fried Eggplant with Meat Stuffing, Peking Roast Duck and Shredded Pork with Chinese Pickles for our main course. The fish was great and as I had expected, it was fresh and tasty. Peter and Jack ordered Fosters Lager, they enjoyed their drinks and sat there chatting. Peter said the beef was lovely, it was spicy and crispy. It was a pity that we thought the Salted Pork was a bit too salty. We all ate and drank our fill, so we only ordered one dessert: Pumpkin biscuits, its the special dessert in this restaurant, its from pumpkin and so on, there was a special dressing and some sesames to go over it, it was delicious, I promise you. We were very pleased that and extra fruit dish was provided free in this restaurant, and the fruits was fantastic. Anyway, we all spent a happy couple of hours enjoying the atmosphere and service there. We all enjoyed ourselves so much as to forget to go home when it was time to leave. A Visit to the Nottingham Bluecoat School After studying for 4 months,on February 1st,I got a chance, with the help of our tutors to introduce some Chinese culture to the British students,at one of the high schools here in Nottingham(If you want to know more about this school, please visit wwwbluecoatnotts schuk)It is quite a lot of fun but it is also quite different from what I am used to back in China!Firstly, you dont have as many students hereAnd as you can see in the picture, they dont have to sit in rowsUsually, there are about 30students in one class, but the higher the grades, the less the studentsI even observed one class with only two students,a French classSecondly, the students dont have textbooks of their own as we doAll they can pray for are some handoutsAnd you had better keep track of each and every one of them Otherwise, there is nothing you can turn to when the tests are around the corner Thirdly, there are m ore inter- actions during the classesIf a student doesnt understand something or doesnt follow the teacher, he or she will just ask right there and they dont always buy what the teacher saysYou can always find argum ents between teachers and studentsThis is one way to m ake the students be m ore creative!Fourthly, the teachersrole is different The teacher is no longer a teacher, rather an organizerYou dont see sets of rules or facts hereIt is all up to you to figure ou
