But today in the US,researchers have generally found the following to be accurate.Black is the colour of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It also implies submission(屈服). Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also make the wearer seem aloof(冷淡的) or evil,so Villains in novels or films, such as Dracula, often wear black.Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light, considered a summer colour. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colours. The most emotionally intense colour, red, stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. Red is often used in restaurant decorating schemes because it is an appetite stimulant. However, since it is an extreme colour, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves.Blue is the colour of the sky and the ocean. Compared with red,it causes the opposite reaction. Peaceful blue, often used in bedrooms, causes the body to produce calming chemicals. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms. In spite of that,it is one of the least appetizing colours and can also be cold and depressing.Currently the most popular decorating colour, green, symbolizes nature. It is a calming and refreshing colour. People waiting to appear on TV sit in “green rooms” to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. However, seamstresses(女裁缝)often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic colour, people lose their temper more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult colour for the eyes to take in,so it can be overpowering if overused.36. A cook can choose the following colours to dress dishes for his customer EXCEPT _A. yellow B. red C. blue D. green37. What kind of person do you think a “Villain” (in paragraph 2) is?A. An ill man. B. A thin person. C. An influential person. D. A religious man.38. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Colour Fashion B. Colour Psychology C. Colour Decoration D. Colour CulturesBIn todays throwaway society, dealing with the citys growing mountain of waste is an increasing challenge for the city council(市议会)Recently,Edinburgh is faced with the problem of disposing of(处理) about 250,000 million tons of waste a year. Despite different ways to dispose of much of it in a green manner largely through encouraging recyclingits aging facilities such as the Powderhall landfill do not have the ability to deal with it.The European Union(EU) has issued a new policy, regulating how such mountains of waste are to be disposed of. The five councils (Edinburgh,East Lothian,West Lothian,Midlothian and Borders) face fines around $18 million a year from 2013 if they dont increase recycling levels and rely less on landfill. With this in mind, the councils got together with the idea of building a large incinerator plant (垃圾焚烧厂) to burn half of the waste produced in their districts. But the plan fell apart after the change of target levels by a new UK government waste policy which required that no more than 25% of the citys waste should be disposed of in this way by 2025.After the plan was abandoned,a private company which already transported millions of tons of the citys waste by train to a landfill site near Dunbar, offered an alternative solution when it suggested opening a huge waste site near Portobello.Since Powderhall is supposed to close in 2015,it seemed necessary for the members of the Edinburgh Council to accept the suggestion. But soon they turned it downafter 700 local objections reached thembecause it would have meant hundreds of lorries a day making loud noise through heavily populated areas. That still leaves the council with a problem. By 2013,only 50% of 1995 levels of waste will be allowed to be sent to landfill. Even if recycling targets are met, there will still be a large amount of rubbish to be burnt up. Due to this,Edinburgh and Midlothian councils have now decided to work together to build an incinerator plant as time to find a solution is fast running out.39. The main way of handling waste in a green manner in Edinburgh is _A. recycling B. restoring C. burying D. burning40. The five councils worked out a plan to build an incinerator plant to _A. reduce the cost of burying waste B. meet the EU requirementsC. speed up waste recycling D. replace landfill sites41. The city council of Edinburgh rejected the suggestion to open a huge landfill site near Portobello because _A. it came from a private company B. the council was not interested in itC. it was not supported by EU D. the local people were against it42. What is the final dream an Edinburgh and Midlothian Councils?A. To open a new landfill nearby. B. To close the Powderhall landfill in 2015.C. To set up a plant for burning waste. D. To persuade people to reduce their waste.CFrogs with deformities(畸形) continue to spread in the western United States, new research says. A parasite(寄生虫) called Ribeiroia infects several kinds of frogs when they are developing, causing deformities such as no legs or more legs than normal. These frogs are often unable to move and either die or quickly get eaten by other birds.Scientists already knew that the parasite was the reason for the frog deformities. They wanted to find out whether known hot spots of Ribeiroia populations in four western states had changed since they were last surveyed in 1999.So in 2010 Pieter Johnson,an expert at the University of Colorado, and his team gathered data of frogs and parasites in 48 wetlands in America. They found that the parasite infections were still common in frogs.“We found that, although the distribution of Ribeiroia across wetlands changed, there was little net effect on overall parasite spreading, with 31 percent of wetlands gaining the parasite and 27 percent losing the parasite,” Johnson said. “But what was most surprising was that the locations had changed greatly over the last decade. ”For instance, ponds where scientists had found few deformed frogs in 1999 now had 30 percent or more frogs with deformed legs,he said. Likewise, former hot spots now had fewer of these frogs, according to their results. The Ribeiroia parasite has a complex life cycle, which begins with the snail,a creature common in many western U. S. Wetlands. It first lives inside the snail and then goes to live in a tadpole(蝌蚪). It then enters the tadpoles tissue and the developing legs. Consequently, when the tadpole begins to transform into a frog, its “primary system of movement doesnt workit cant jump or swim,” Johnson said. “Thats when the birds”the parasites final host “come and eat the young frogs like popcorn. ” The parasite then reproduces inside the birds. When the birds defecate(排泄),the parasite eggs will go out of the birds and make their way back into the snails.Though the Ribeiroia parasite occurs naturally in North America, human activities likely have something to do with its population,Johnson noted. For instance, the snails feed on algae(藻类). The polluted water from agriculture and industry into wetlands contains nutrients that improve the algae growth. With more snails in the wetlands, the parasites have more initial hosts to infect,Johnson noted.“I dont think this story is just about frogs,” Johnson said. The scientists did not specifically measure how many frog populations at the study sites had declined “though its quite high”. Overall, though, frog populations will fluctuate widely from year to year, said Erin Muths,a zoologist at the U. S. Geological Survey in Fort Collins,Colorado. Those fluctuations are usually based on an unpredictable resource: water. For instance, sometimes ponds dry up,killing many frog eggs. “These changes make it difficult to tell whether we are looking at a real decline in frogs. ” she said.“This distinction is important so that we can know frog populations that are really in trouble, rather than a population that is just having a bad year. ”Thats also why the new research is solid. She said,“It has a longterm aspect and contributes to our understanding of frog decline. ”43. From the text we know that _A. the frogs with more legs can move more quickly and jump higherB. the deformed frogs are now spreading all over the spotsC. the locations with deformed frogs have changed over the yearsD. there are more deformed frogs in the known hot spots44. The underlined word “fluctuate” in the 8th paragraph probably means “_”A. boom B. increase C. remain D. change45. Which of the following is TRUE according to Pieter Johnson?A. The population of frogs is not really in trouble.B. Human activities may contribute to the increase of the parasites.C. Polluted water kills more frogs than the parasites do.D. Future studies will be carried out to study the frogs decline.四、 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)Falling leaves, withering flowers, cold winds, faint sunshine. For many people late autumn can be a season of gloom and depression. Spirits can be low.People who suffer from “the autumn blues” often are extremely exhausted, lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight.“The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD),is not known yet,” says Chen Jue,associate professor at Shanghai Mental Health Centre. “But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability of sunlight.”One theory is that with decreased exposure to sunlight, the biological clock that regulates mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. Exposure to light may reset the biological clock.Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit information between nerves may be altered in individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances.“It is a sad season, but you can try to make it happy. Remember, spring always lives in your heart,” Chen says. Here are some tips to deal with autumn depression.Go outdoors and get some sunlight. Move around. Fresh air and exercise improve the respiratory(呼吸) system and blood circulation and regulate the nervous sy
