Inspiteofthetremendousprogressthathasbeenmadeinthedisciplineofmaterialsscienceandengineeringwithinthepastfewyears,therestillremaintechnologicalchallenges,includingthedevelopmentofevenmoresophisticatedandspecializedmaterials,aswellasconsiderationoftheenvironmentalimpactofmaterialsproductionSomementisappropriaterelativetotheseissuessoastoroundoutthisperspective Nuclearenergyholdssomepromise,butthesolutionstothemanyproblemsthatremainwillnecessarilyinvolvematerialsfromfuelstocontainmentstructuresandfacilitiesforthedisposalofradioactivewaste SignificantquantitiesofenergyareinvolvedintransportationReducingtheweightoftransportationvehicles(automobiles,aircraft,trains,etc),aswellasincreasingengineoperatingtemperatures,willenhancefuelefficiencyNewhighstrength,lowdensitystructuralmaterialsremaintobedeveloped,aswellasmaterialsthathavehighertemperaturecapabilities,foruseinengineponents Furthermore,thereisarecognizedneedtofindnew,economicalsourcesofenergy,andtousethepresentresourcesmoreefficientlyMaterialswillundoubtedlyplayasignificantroleinthesedevelopmentsForexample,thedirectconversionofsolarenergyintoelectricalenergyusessiliconmaterialsToensureaviabletechnology,materialsthatarehighlyefficientinthisconversionprocessyetlesscostlymustbedeveloped Additionally,environmentalqualitydependsonourabilitytocontrolairandwaterpollutionPollutioncontroltechniquesemployvariousmaterialsInaddition,materialsProcessingandrefinementmethodsneedtobeimprovedsothattheyproducelessenvironmentaldegradation,thatis,lesspollutionandlessdespoilageofthelandscapefromminingofrawmaterialsAlso,insomematerialsmanufacturingprocesses,toxicsubstancesareProduced,andtheecologicalimpactoftheirdisposalmustbeconsidered.
